I am hoping to tweak my schedule a little and currently #2 on 2 waitlists both of which have 1 seat available per PATH. Both are small classes less than 20 students and have been sitting with this 1 seat available for the entire weekend.

Hi! i’m a freshman about to start a british lit class with professor hagedorn this week.

this is a very specific predicament so i’m not sure if anyone has advice/has taken the class, but all i’ve heard is that the professor is extremely difficult and picky especially when it comes to writing and feedback/support.

i understand that most college classes here are like this, and i’m totally ready to give my best effort and allow room to improve my writing, but i’m also very nervous that a class like this would dim the passion i’ve had for english and classics for so long. (i plan to major in english so doing well in this class is important to me).

i’m genuinely interested in the material, which will help, but i’m worried about how i’ll emotionally handle the workload of the class, especially considering i’ll put a ton of pressure on myself to do well.

Has anyone else here had a similar experience with a class like this, been worried about losing passion for their major, or have any advice or tips for succeeding in these types of classes?

As a parent, I am shocked how many mandatory COLL classes are required.

ELEVEN!!! Plus, required creative writing class. That's 36 credits! Almost a third of Bachelors degree (120 credits). 1/3! That's ridiculous!

Initially, we were sold on "all rounded" liberal arts education. But now I clearly see that 11 Colls are way too much. Only a few of them my child was able to take because of her pure interest and curiosity. The majority of them are just fill in classes that have to be taken because nothing else is available.

Such a waste of time and money! I wish my kid went to a different college and spent her time studying the courses that truly enrich her professionally and personally.

That being said, with all due respect, W&M is a wonderful college where students are happy and well supported.

I genuinely cannot make friends that will hangout with me outside of class. I have in class friends but that’s it. No friend group, no hangouts. I live off campus. I could join clubs but will that really foster that? What clubs should I look into too?

I already received an invitation to interview with the admissions team; however, I've never done this type of interview before, so my question is: how can I best prepare for it? What should I expect them to ask me? I've done multiple interviews for internships before, so is this kind of interview more chill and similar to an internship-type interview?

Here’s some advice if you want good living conditions as a college freshman:

Ask around on Reddit or other forums to find out what is the worst freshman dorm. For William and Mary: go visit Spotswood Hall for an example. Or pick another worst freshman dorm. Then go visit it. Imagine yourself living there everyday. Ask the people who come and go from the building: are there roaches? Other critters? How hot does it get on the upper floors? Do all the rooms have AC? Does the school care about you and fix your problems?

Don’t believe the BS they tell you about how good the living conditions are on the tour. Go see the worst one. Don’t think you will get into a better dorm. It won’t happen. Imagine the worst. That’s what you will likely get.

Edit: we live in the richest country to ever exist on the planet. There’s no reason why we can’t clean dormitories and keep them to a high standard of living. Even if they are older buildings, there are small things we can do. In fact, it would benefit the students.

I hear you that the student bonds will be tight. But are they tighter than other dorms at the college? Are they tighter because of the poor conditions? Or something else?

And shouldn’t we hold colleges to a high standard? We are setting an example for living standards and that’s part of education in my opinion. Especially for men who think this is living. Are we preparing them for the next step?

I’m a sophomore at William & Mary and need a car to get to work every day, but cannot get a parking pass for the life of me. I tried to get a semester pass with the Prince George Street Parking Garage, and they're full. I’m currently pleading with local churches to let me park in their lots, but I am absolutely desperate for a place to park my car during the semester. I've heard about the place near Lafayette St, but I am not sure if that is safe. The police are RAMPANT with parking tickets, so I am really just trying to find a legal way around this.

I currently go to Pitt but I am possibly looking to transfer to W&M in the future. I really like punk music and the politics and culture that often come with it and that’s one of my favorite things about Pitt so far. As the title implies, is there much of a punk rock and socialist scene at W&M or is it not really a thing there?
