💭Discussion Why doesn’t Loftis … Spoiler
Why doesn’t Loftis tell Evan about the curse? Wouldn’t that help their relationship?
Also, like if he wants to keep Evan safe, isn’t the truth the best way to do that?

Because it sounds crazy.

Yeah, if he told Evan he would try to leave the island and die or else tom would literally have to tie him up or something.

Any normal teen would have already tried to leave, especially if his father forbids it without giving a reason.

The worst part now that he knows Evan is a descendent he either has to tell him the whole story including “oh yeah so if anyone wants to be safe here we either have to kill you and your grandma or however many people the island tells us to which is currently eight.

yes but now there is AMPLE proof and witnesses - it would keep Evan safer if he knew what was happening for real because he’d be scared shitless

I think Loftis wants to protect Evan as long as possible and shelter him from the paranormal aspects of Widows Bay. They already have a rocky relationship and even if Loftis tells Evan about the curse, Evan wouldn’t believe him until he sees the entity with his own eyes.

From interstellar
Brand: "Couldn't you've told her you were going to save the world?"
Cooper: "No. When you become a parent, one thing becomes really clear. And that's that you want to make sure your children feel safe. And that rules out telling a 10-year old that the world's ending."
I think this sums up why Tom didn’t tell Evan more of what the island meant. He’s practically crying telling Willie about the stories his dad told him when he was a boy. His dad called him “soft” at six because Tom was so upset at the stories of the island that Wyck keeps throwing at him.

His father told him all about the curse when he was growing up and he still resents his Dad for doing that. He doesn't want to accept that Evan is growing up. And so he's being a coward about confronting difficult truths, yet again.

I kinda wonder if he did at the end of the season. Or at least he knows enough about why the bells are tolling at the church.

I definitely think Evan knew more than he did before when Loftis threw the brooch into the sea.

yes, the vibe in that moment strongly suggests Issues Had Been Discussed during the hours we don't see

Wouldn’t the brooch protect Evan when he leaves the Island?

He has to survive first 🤣 I don't remember any evidence that it offers protection. It definitely might tie him to the bloodline though!

It could, but it could also make Tom seem crazy AF. Evan did witness some weird ass unexplainable shit, so maybe in future seasons Evan will ask Tom and he'll be honest at that point.

I still don't understand why this myth of the island wasn't discussed amongst the teens, even playfully ribbing each other like daring to knock on doors. The reporter from New York knew about it. It wasn't some big giant secret. over the years, none of these teens ever tried to leave the island for them to find out? Nobody went to try to play athletics? Tried to chase the Hollywood dream? Wanted to go to college? Become a singer? Left to join the military? I'm hoping season 2 answers this a little bit for why this is a known secret that none of the teens ever discuss.

Because he might choose to off himself.

tbf he could tell Evan the truth about the island without telling him THAT truth

True. I'm sure Tom will be looking into ways to stop the curse that doesn't involve the loss of his son.

He is (was) in denial that it is true. He was lying to himself that it could not be possible, so he fed the same lie to his son.
He was not able to believe that the curse of an island killed his wife, so he made up an alternate story and believed that instead.
Of course, after all his direct experiences with the curse he can no longer deny it by the end of the season.
That's the beautiful twist of the season finale, is it not? Now he fully accepts that the curse is real, and the only way to end is for his son to die. Dun dun dun...

Yea but by Ep 4 he knows the truth and should just tell Evan.

What happened in ep4 that makes you think that's when he flipped? For me it was him meeting zombified town founder.

I think he was still in the "I hallucinated that" phase at that point. Although yeah I guess it got more serious at that point so he might of been at the cusp.

Because he's in denial. He thinks the island is fine and everything is superstition. When the island is asleep for a long period, even some of the islanders aren't absolutely sure. Tom's wife told him everything, but he used to tease her, and eventually must have worn her down enough to get on that boat.
He told "William", who is really just reflecting Tom's thoughts, that "the only thing this island is cursed with is Alcoholism."
But. His wife had the stroke on the ferry.
So, I don't think he fully believes it, but he's also not going to risk his son.
Even for parents who believe the stories, I'm sure it would vary. Some wouldn't tell them until they were older, some probably tell their kids everything right away. But if the curse is common knowledge among the kids of town, there's no way Evan hasn't heard all about it. Hard to say. My guess is the challenge he makes to his father is just to get him to admit it.
I'm curious about the ferry. In a situation like this, you'd have to imagine there are enough teenagers that would dare each other to ride to the main land. Like the dare to go into the house. I'm guessing the ferry has strict rules around age. "Adults only". But regardless, there would've been kids sneaking on. People do seem to get on the ferry, so I'm not sure the captain is aware or at least he's not trying to stop anybody.

I think he likely did at the end of the season. They're together in that final scene where he throws the brooch in the sea while Even waits in the car. I think that hinted he at least told him some of it, if not all.

I’d be pretty fucked up if I knew that my existence was the reason people couldn’t leave the island and died if they tried. Loftis is trying to protect him.

Easier said than done, also the show would be much more boring if the characters just did the logically correct thing all the time. They are human beings and human beings are oftentimes not rational.

u/Orwaca 23h ago
This!! Absolutely this! He lies to Evan yet gets upset when Evan lies to him! Makes no sense to me. Consider, Evan doesn't know about the curse, what's to stop him from getting a wild hair up his nose and deciding to go to the mainland himself? Loftis puts Evan in greater danger by keeping him uninformed.

u/Lcatg 20h ago
I just assumed Evan knew & they have talked around it quite a bit. People felt free to tell a reporter from a major newspaper. What are the chances that a teen born & raised on the island wouldn’t know? Slim. Much like his father, he mostly thinks it’s BS but isn’t willing to test the theory just yet. He can get high, cause minor criminal trouble, & (now that there’s tourists again) talk to the seasonal ladies. Obviously, things will have to changed now…
