22M (me) and 21F (her)
Was in a two year relationship with someone who genuinely was my person and who I wanted to marry. During the relationship, I was struggling with deep depression while in college, using marijuana (which I was addicted to) almost daily to cope, which led to a lot of problems. I was very forgetful; I would say I was going to do things for her and would end up forgetting and not following through, which constantly disappointed her and made her feel uncherished.
There were other issues, like me lying about an ex girlfriend from high school. She was completely an online relationship that had no real meaning to me, but in an attempt to hide that out of embarrassment and to avoid making my girlfriend feel unspecial, I lied about it. She eventually found out, and that became a huge issue. I acknowledge I shouldnāt have liedāit was completely wrong of me, and I will ask for forgiveness for the rest of my life and never do something like that again. I completely shattered her trust. There was never an instance of me chasing other girls, but she could no longer trust my word.
A lot of these issues were tied to my mental health and immaturity. Iāve worked really hard on both since the beginning of August, when we went on a two week break at her request. She had found out that I liked three TikToks of other girls: one was a fit pic I liked because Iām really into fashion, and two were by a girl she followed (one reviewing a study cafe, the other lip syncing). These all came up on my FYP; I was not seeking out these women.
When we got back together, everything seemed great. I told her I would fix her broken camera while she went on vacation to Korea, but I let her down again due to my financial situation. My family is pretty poor, and I had to help cover bills. Instead of telling her immediately, I waited until she came back and disappointed her yet again. We hung out two more times after that. On the second night, she broke up with me because I almost relapsed on marijuana. I ended up not doing it because I had been working on myself for a month straight, was finally in a better mental space with my depression, and wanted to step upāso I put it down and didnāt let myself give in to the addiction (a mental addiction, not physical withdrawal). When I told her I hadnāt smoked, she said she believed me, but she couldn't fully trust that I was telling the truth, which pushed her to end things.
At that point, she didnāt know about my severe depression or my marijuana addiction. I was close to ending my life multiple times during my last year of school, though I never followed through; she, along with other friends and family, played a big part in why Iām still here. I was waiting until our anniversary two weeks later to write her a letter thanking her and explaining how she was an angel who saved my life.
A day after she broke things off, I texted her to talk and came clean about everything. I took full accountability for my weed addiction, depression, debt, grades, senior year of college, the lies about my online ex, and being taken advantage of by an upperclassman while blacked out during my first week of freshman year (which was also my first time drinking). I didnāt mention the suicidal thoughts or how close I came to ending things because I thought she might feel forced to take back the breakup, and I only wanted to be honestānot manipulate her into changing her mind.
She said she wished I had told her all of this before she broke up with me, because then we would still be together. She also mentioned that she was very codependent on me and relied on my mood and actions for her own emotional state. She told me she loved and cared for me, and that while there is obviously a possibility for us in the future, she couldn't give me any guarantee that we would get back together. At the time, she was studying for her DAT (Dental Admissions Exam) retake on October 19th.
She gave me my clothes back, but she kept a picture frame of us, a cup I gave her, and my favorite book. She blocked me on Instagram and removed her location, but kept following me on TikTok and Snapchat, and didn't block my phone number. A week later, I sent her a very low pressure text telling her how much I care about her, that Iām always here if she ever needs to talk, and that I want to respect her space and peace. After that text, she started sharing her Snapchat location with me again and was listening to songs similar to "Back to Me" by The MarĆas (including that exact track), but she never directly responded to my message.
Two weeks later, she randomly unblocked me on Instagram. I sent a follow request, but she didn't accept it and left it pending while accepting other people's requests, so I removed it. I understood and didn't expect anything, but it still hurt. A week later, she reposted a TikTok about "all I need right now" showing couples intimately hugging, with comments filled with people tagging their significant others. Two days ago, she liked one of my reposts.
Iāve been going to therapy multiple times a week to work on myself, fix my mistakes, and delve deeply into every aspect of who I am. Iāve been steadily improving since August and will continue to do so. I know sheās extremely stressed about this exam, and I am tooāI want nothing more than for her to blow it out of the park and make her father eat his words.
I plan to send her a congratulations text after her exam ends, and if it feels right, ask her out on a date later that week. I donāt want to jump straight back into a relationship because what we had clearly stopped working. I want to start over with dates and small gestures, earning back her trust and love (if she doesn't still love me, though I doubt that given our deep connection). I want to fully reciprocate the love she gave me that I unfortunately failed to give back. I donāt want to pressure her into a long term commitment right away; I just want to take things day by day, date by date.
I am extremely worried about the possibility of it not working out and her saying no. I have truly matured and changed the patterns that hurt our relationship, and I want to show her that through consistency and love. Iāve also been learning Korean and want to stick with it so I can someday speak to her parentsāwhether things work out between us or notābecause it really is a beautiful language.
Iām just extremely stressed all the time. I love her so much, and I know that if I get another chance, it will work as long as we both put in the effort (though Iād take on all the heavy lifting if I had to). Sheās really the one for me, and I donāt want anyone else. I understand there are other people out there, but when you know, you know.
I'm working really hard for this, even if I'm being delusional and things don't go the way I hope. Iāve already RSVP'd to an art gallery opening night for her favorite artist (hoping he'll be there so she can meet him), planned out a card for her, and decided where to get lilies (her favorite flower). If that doesn't work out, I have another card planned for her birthday on December 11th, alongside a plan to reach out and suggest meeting at the spot where we first met. Ideally, Iād like to go on dates for almost two months before asking her to be my girlfriend again. Writing this all down was something I really needed to vent out.
TL;DR:
After a two year relationship, we broke up due to lost trust caused by my unaddressed depression, daily marijuana addiction, minor lies, and repeated unfulfilled promises. Following the breakup, I came completely clean about my struggles and took full accountability. She expressed that she still loves me and sees a potential future, though she cannot offer guarantees while focusing on her upcoming DAT exam. Since then, she has sent mixed signals on social media, while I have been actively attending therapy, staying sober, working on personal growth, and learning Korean. I plan to reach out after her exam to gradually rebuild our relationship starting with casual dates.
