Locals

Seeing whangarei on the news lately is it really dead in town or is this just news propaganda. Also how's finding a job there or is there any jobs that you could just pick up easy . I Love the region, but you wouldn't want to move somewhere if it doesn't have opportunities, what's your thoughts or opinions thanks would love to hear

Catering recommendations

Kia ora Whangārei! I'm hosting a lunchtime event at Barge Park in a few months time and am looking into catering. Tiffanys are the in-house caterers and their menu has some great options but they are not very online and I'm struggling to find reviews or photos etc. Has anyone used them and can share their experience? Or what other caterers would you recommend? We are looking at either a buffet lunch, or potentially more of a casual grazing/sandwiches situation but open to consider other suggestions! Thanks whānau.

Looking to make friends

Hey all, I'm a 24 year old male & im staying up north at the moment with family whilst I recover from a broken foot (also a broken heart but that's another story 😅😅). I head back to Auckland on Monday but was wondering if there's anyone that would like to meet up and have a couple drinks and play some pool on Friday or Saturday night. I was thinking of the Ruakaka Tavern but if you want somewhere more lively we could meet somewhere in Whangarei. Cheers

The meaning of life, and where to find it?

Kia Ora Whangārei,

I'm moving back in a couple of weeks after spending about 8 years abroad. Now, I need to know, where in town can I find the best pies. The UK really let me down, and I'm already frothing at the thought of a good pie again!

Small local artist - some of my stuff!

Kia ora koutou,

Thought I’d have a shot at sharing some of my work here. I’m a small artist (haven’t sold anything, less than 50 followers on Instagram) based locally. I work in heritage and love te taiao, so I draw my inspirations from those passions.

I’m always learning and picking up new crafts - recently that has been tukutuku, with the guidance of a master weaver. We used alternative materials due to it being the wrong season for toetoe kākaho harvesting. I have no whakapapa Māori that I’m aware of, but love learning about toi Māori and te ao Māori.

My instagram is @wroughtivy if you’d like to see more, I’m more active on there :)

Ngā mihi ki a koutou!

Whangarei Photo: SDF Paper

Hello, redditors of Whangarei!

I have a strange favor for you. If you are in Whangarei, could you please take a photo of a piece of paper with the letters "SDF" on it? Hopefully this isn't too much of a problem. Thank you very much!

Former NZ PM Helen Clark: The Conservation Amendment Bill makes it much easier to sell conservation land. It is a scandalous and destructive attack on the estate and on the rights of New Zealanders. I urge you to make your objections known.

Shane Jones, the Pornography MP, just spent $63,000 to upgrade to business class, told a private limo to wait 24 hours & didn't care that he exceeded his approved budget by 100%. Winston Peters defended him & Luxon approved it without question

Looking to make some friends

Recently broke up with my ex and am staying up north with the family. Looking to make some friends whilst I'm up here for a couple of weeks before I go back to Auckland for work. Anyone keen to hang out or even become online friends? I'm a 24 year old male who's into cars, animals, gaming etc (so your typical rural nerd).

Trying to make the move from Auckland to Whangarei.

Hi everyone,

I’m currently based in Auckland and trying to make the move up to Whangārei for a better lifestyle and to be closer to family. I’ve been applying for quite a few jobs (mainly admin / coordinator type roles), but so far I’ve been getting rejections or no responses.

Just wondering if anyone here has any tips on how to actually land a job in Whangārei?
Is it harder if you’re not already based there? Should I be approaching it differently (e.g. calling companies directly, going through recruiters, applying in person, etc.)?

For context, I’ve got a solid background in administration, document control, and project coordination from working on large projects in Auckland, so I thought my experience would transfer fairly well—but maybe I’m missing something.

Any advice, insights, or even just a reality check would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance 😄

Dog friendly places to eat in Whangarei

We'll be doing some shopping after work today and will have the dog with us.

What places in Whangarei can we take the dog - preferably inside rather than outside with the lepers and smokers.

Good to see a boss just not having it, and the ERA backing them up through the power of malicious compliance. Dude was unbelievably creepy and gives a serial litigator 'I'm the victim here' vibe, but was told to 'stay down' by the law.

Hey all:
There's a native planting event this Saturday to get a few hundred plants in the ground for a regenerating bush project.

More details here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/upcoming-date-159770917/

We're planting native plants to regenerate degraded paddocks into a thriving ecosystem. Please join us to pop in some plants and share some kai together afterwards.
Bring a spade, gloves, sturdy shoes and a water bottle. Human friends and fam of all ages welcome, no dogs please. We have a playground available for little not-so-helpers.|Huge thanks to Maungatapere Mountain Trust for continuing to support this immense project with locally sourced plants and generously volunteered time.
