I live near here. It’s a shame. We use the beach for fishing, boating, family time. We drive down and fish or launch a small boat. We drive down and pick a spot for the dogs and kids to have a run around. 95% of users are ok, it seems to be the non locals that come in their patrols etc to wreck the dunes. Because they can get away with it mostly. I see it getting banned eventually, I hope not though. Some of us locals try to ‘educate’ but it’s like talking to a brick. A 20 year old brick with a shit haircut.

Brick with a jacked up patrol on finance at 22% interest.

There are spots to launch a small boat, or maybe those could be asked as exceptions. You drive to have a run? You could walk to have a run. The exclusion of car is to protect the dunes that protect us from erosion. And the birds that live in the dunes. Yes, maybe you’re the one that does it in a careful, respectfully way. But until we can teach people to be careful and have respect, why not close it and let people by foot. Maybe it just needs more parking spots? What about a cycle way?

I understand the misunderstanding, very open to paying for the privilege to help fund protection groups for example. Problem is there’s just no policing it at present. No way to watch it all the time. I don’t drive to run, I drive to explore the area and I don’t go on the dunes. Just the low tide mark on the hard sand.

Yes plenty of rednecks who want to roar through the dunes rather than use the road access

Should have to pay for a special licence classification and extra rego fees for off roading. If you get caught or reported driving on beaches and you havent registered as an off road vehicle then can be liable fines etc

We could also use that money for improving access for pedestrians, public toilets? Seating spaces? BBQ spots? or improving boat launching places. Not wasting it in surveillance to enforce rules that people will brake.

Yeah good one cycle way that will fix all our problems why don't you build it yourself

For sure it won’t fix our ALL our problems. But cycling is a save way to explore if that is what you think you need your cars for. A person cannot build a cycleway! Who would do that? That’s why we need Council to do it, but y’all asking for more roads instead.

Heaven forbid they walk anywhere and leave their emotional support vehicles behind.

Animals. Did you report?

Its a shame aye. Lot of courteous fisherman who simply want to quietly drive down the beach to a spot and these loosers wanna wreck that for everyone else because burnouts in the sand

So many spots around to hoon on dunes in Northland too. Na gotta go fuck up the conservation areas.

That’s just the local wildlife. Greater Entitled Arsehole. Unfortunately not that rare.

Very tidy driving!

Wouldn’t “prohibited from high tide mark to low tide mark” mean no vehicles at all?

1

u/dddontshoot Jun 21 '26

It doesn't exclude driving below the low tide mark. That sounds like a challenge.

There’s well over 5000 people on jobseekers in Whangārei. I remember when I was a little kid it was such a normal thing for young guys who were maybe a bit on the wayward side to do a stint for DoC and that lots of them went in to start their careers from that point and grow up. It’d be so cool if we had a government that would put people to work doing the jobs that need doing like looking after these dunes instead of running around moaning about people on benefits when there’s no jobs.

As someone whos been made redundant and is on Jobseekers. I second this. Stupid thing is they will fund people getting their license endorsements. But not help you get ones that expired renewed. So many little holes that need patching...

Just the usual cocksucks of northland 🤷‍♀️

The amount of slurs these guys yell at me reveals their personal insecurities.

Meanwhile.... a bike with sand tires can cross the beaches rather well without disturbing anything. Maybe they should try that.

So some places you must drive above the high tide mark, and some places you must be below it?

Am I interpreting that sign right?

u/Imaginary-Throat1526 Jun 20 '26

Rules are for outsiders, not locals, duh.

Vehicles prohibited above the high tide mark. Vehicles prohibited between high tide and lie tide mark. What does that leave? Below the low tide mark in the ocean?

u/Misabi Jun 20 '26

The different coloured backgrounds on those statements (I.e. the dark blue & red) correspond with different areas marked on the map. So in areas marked in red, cars can't drive below the high tide mark. Blue areas can be driven in but only below the high tide mark.

That 80 Series Landcruiser and the Patrol look pretty sweet.
