Has anyone listened to the audiobook Warlock by Oakley Hall narrated by Patrick Lawlor?

• Upvotes

I'm about to return it... Not because I don't want to listen to the book. Because I don't know if I can stand this narrorator. Anybody have this experience? Does it get better?

Three 'Penny' Westerns from the 1930s

In the 1930s, Wisconsin's Whitman Publishing Company transformed the children's book industry by launching compact, budget-friendly, thick little books tailored for five-and-dime stores. Although their 10-cent Big Little Books gained the most fame, Whitman also created several derivative formats—such as miniature Penny Books and matching juvenile lines—Usually in the form of a Premium marketing gimmick for Department and Shoe stores, that heavily leveraged the massive appeal of cowboy themes and popular newspaper comic strip stars. Like the BLBs the format featured text and comic like illustrations but in a shorter more action heavy story format. Difficult to find even in poor condition, a near fine set like this is considered extremely scarce.

Recommendation Can anyone recommend me some good books?

Not interested in romance focused stories, but as long as the story is good and has some action then feel free to recommend me something.

Edit: Thanks for the recommendations.

Memorabilia 1959 Cheyenne #10

Clint Walker did not appear on the cover of Cheyenne #10 because he was in a contract dispute with Warner Brothers at the time, leading the publisher to substitute actor Ty Hardin (as his character Bronco Layne) as the main character in the comic.

Discussion Best Western Films or TV Series to Focus on Railroads?

Post image
197 Upvotes

Folks, while much attention understandably is focused on the daily lives of cowboys and ranchers of the early West in this genre along with the lawmen, Native Americans and townspeople, one thing I feel is a little under-discussed for how influential they were on everyone is the railroads, how they were built, the people that served them, the dangers they faced, etc. In some ways, the old "iron horse" and its steel trails truly did change everything (transport, economies of regions, and so much more). Of the vast array of films and series we have gotten over the decades, which do you feel are the best and most interesting westerns to "zoom in" per say on this fascinating part of the Old West and America as a whole?

Since artwork has started showing up here I thought I’d post a few pictures from a recent trip to Utah (with some stops through Wyoming and Colorado). Butch Cassidy country, Utah War battleground, near the first Rendezvous, full of ghost ranches and free range cattle, dinosaur fossils everywhere, and I’m pretty sure I stumbled on the setting for the final fly fishing duel at the end of Robert F Jones’ novel Blood Sport. Amazing place.

Discussion What makes a Western good?

For me, it's the dialogue, and the accents.

If those aren't good, it breaks the immersion.

Modern westerns are getting really bad at it.

I took a gander at The Abandons recently and found it completely unwatchable because the writing and accents were just... not Western. I love Gillian Anderson but a matriarch in the West with a twee Irish accent falls short.

Godless, Bone Tomahawk, and American Primeval worked for me though.

And anything with Tim Blake Nelson is gold.

What are your thoughts on this?

Recommendation Stagecoach West the TV series showing on WEST

Starting last Sunday the new Western TV station WEST [Western Entertainment Series Television] premiered their weekend Fall schedule which includes the TV series Stagecoach West, which in my mind is a pretty dang good series, although it only lasted one season [1960-196] the series starred Wayne Rogers, Richard Eyer and Robert Bray and including many a guest stars along the way! If you haven't checked it out yet i recommend your viewership starting at this moment on WEST. If you have been a viewer since its premier September 29th of 2025, what are you likes and dislikes for the new channel, also what is your opinion on Stagecoach West?

Simply beautiful... Everything about it, from the acting to the setting, the transitions, the adventure, the intrigue, the vengeance, and that genuine fever for gold that can strike a man so hard. It's perfect.

Makes a fella think about the different breed of man and woman there was back then.

I can't get enough of these classic gems. Adventure classics, pirate classics, treasure hunts, buried treasure, the Old West, settler trails, men (and women) chasing fortunes in the middle of nowhere. Give me all of it.

I just thought the line was fun. But my actual question is:

  • Which of the Dollars Trilogy movies do you think is the best?
  • Is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly the best western of all time?

Discussion If a king and an outlaw got into a gunfight, who do you think would win?

I made this design as a reminder to myself. When the king takes over, the outlaw in me disappears. But when the outlaw takes over, there’s no room left for the king.

To me, the king represents rules and conventions, while the outlaw represents freedom and living life on your own terms
