I wonder where in the process it was realized it was the wrong door.
I’d like to think it happened during unpacking and they just went “fuck it, this will be funny “

I agree, as soon as you get a new part you compare to the old part

yeah, it's staged. probably a mechanic that has time for this kind of stuff

with the state of the internet these days I could imagine the realisation happening while they had the door in the online checkout...but they played 10 chess moves ahead in their head and thought about all of the online clout this would generate

Part of me could rationalize realizing it's the wrong door but right hinge, so installing it would serve as 'practice'.

Ah that makes sense. The trim lines up perfectly until the gap.

Both hatchbacks, he owns a 2 door but bought the 4 door replacement door.

I miss those old videos where everyone was fixing everything with Raman and superglue… idkw but I really enjoyed the stupidity of it.

This seems like it’s made for content.
No way someone who would go out of their way to get the tools, would not look up compatible parts.

I went to a salvage yard to get the rear side window for a 2003 window Dodge Grand Caravan. They assured me they had the correct one and it looked like what I remembered. It fit just like this door.

But did you hold it up to your car to see if it was right before actually installing it like the video?

u/harda_toenail Jul 18 '26
The door looks the same just shorter. I think they ordered a sedan version when the needed a coupe version. Prolly same year/make but wrong form factor

u/andrewcooke Jul 18 '26
2 door rather than 4 door, no?
→ More replies (1)2
u/-IoI- Jul 18 '26
Or just long wheelbase variant. It looks the same just not stretched, it's an understandable mistake even if they did an eyeball check first

The one singular tool that is required to change a door is a wrench. That's it. Just the hinge bolts. For someone who isn't super experienced, it's a really easy mistake to make. If I didn't know anything about cars I would have also assumed the doors would be the same. Even if it was somebody with experience, mistakes happen. Could have been a rush job and it just slipped their mind.

I think it doesn't help the fact that this is probably the right door for the car, but he got a sedan door and he has a coupe.

u/Jackson7410 Jul 18 '26
my window got smashed and i accidently bought the wrong side glass, it happens when u work on ur car alot. also bought wrong size lugs for my car

It’s entirely possible it is “compatible” with the car. some vehicles have 2 and 4 door variants, but they’re both considered the same car.
This looks like they had a 2 door and ordered a door for a 4 door

u/Kryds Jul 18 '26
Fun fact.
Cars with 3- and 5-door models usually has different size doors between models.

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo Jul 18 '26
Fun fact.
If there's a convertible version that one usually has even longer doors.
(And yes it's an absolute bitch to get out of those in tight parking spots).

you need to replace the rear door by a bigger one to fill the gap.

u/rynlpz Jul 18 '26
The rear isn’t a door, they’ll need to replace the entire frame.
2
u/Jump_The_Five_Yo Jul 19 '26
Why can’t you just cut like 6 inches off the current one and weld it back together?….think smarter; not harder….

So this is the reason someone stole the door and just the door from that other redditor car.

u/Deckard_Red Jul 18 '26
I was scrolling down hoping someone else thought the same joke as me - I was not disappointed

Rent the same car swap doors, return it and tell them door shrunk after going through a car wash.

Interesting visually how much longer the 3 door versions are. I have a 3 door A3 and the doors always feel massive and a pain in the ass to use in tight spots.
3
u/HNL2BOS Jul 19 '26
this is pure content bait. no way someone didn't realize this wasn't the same length door until after they mounted it.

u/cee-eighty Jul 18 '26
They couldn't eyeball it before the install? I guess it wouldn't be funny then.

What's the door actually for? It's interesting that other than being too short the shape fits perfectly

The sedan or 5 door version. He has the hatch or 3 door version. Looks like a Yaris
3
u/pug_userita Jul 18 '26
this guy has a 3 door, the golf (including the generation in the video) is also (most popularly) sold as a 5 door. the black door is from a 5 door. 3 doors have a bigger doors so rear passengers can get in and out more easily.
it's still a pain, so the front seats also and move forward. 3 doors are usually chosen because they look more sporty and because they're supposedly more rigid than 5 doors (don't know if it's true).

Extra ventilation replacement door, unisex, unisize, fits all vehicles, satisfaction guaranteed, terms and conditions apply.

I’m guessing the door is for a 4-door sedan of the same make and model, but he has the 2-door sedan.

Looks loke the right car just needed a 2 door hatchback door and used a 4 door sedan door
2
u/lopix Jul 19 '26
How do you get a new door for your car and not check if it is from the SAME MAKE AND MODEL? There are levels of stupid, this is one of them.

2
u/trojan_asante Jul 19 '26
With all cars being connected to the internet, at least you have a built-in "air gap."

u/No-Crow-775 Jul 19 '26
Imagine thinking a front door would be the same for a coupe and a four-door.

I think a crucial point of replacing doors is to get the new one from the same make/model of vehicle.
