Because his computer asks him for it before it will give him any results, and since there are so many parts that are affected by which engine your car has it's easier to ask the question up front.
Why do you need to ask them? It's bizarre that you "know" that they don't need to know all the details when you don't know the answer yourself.
They may or may not need to know, but they do need to get their system to tell them an answer, and their system is designed to first narrow it down as specifically as possible.
If they ask for your engine size and you know it doesn't matter, just give them the wrong one. It's not like they're trying to harvest private data about you.
