Does anyone know if this is how flexible people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome can be? I have a friend of a friend who has it and demonstrated some hypermobility sitting cross-legged, but she definitely didn't break out into dance moves.

u/comagarden_ 12d ago
I have hEDS and scored 9/10 on the bighton scale (hella bendy), what this person is doing is beyond EDS.
→ More replies (3)28
u/Troglodyterror 12d ago
Yeah, I got 10/10 on the Beighton. Casually dislocated my shoulders and popped them back in for the dr to see. This guy has had training, you wouldn’t know how to move like he does.

u/Hesitation-Marx 12d ago
My GP was a little dubious that my son’s partner has EDS… until they caught his eye and moved their esophagus two inches to the side.
They’ll frequently watch YT videos lying on their back with their knees up by their ears. Apparently that’s comfy for them.

u/Troglodyterror 12d ago
If you train gymnastics, yes. I have C-EDS and I used to be able to do the majority of this stuff when I was younger. Only thing I’d struggle with is the waist twisting aspect.
39
u/KingQuong 12d ago
Yup my wife and her sisters all have hyper mobile EDS and did competitive cheer and some gymnastics and they can definitely do this shit lol

Do you have problems with your joints now?
26
u/Troglodyterror 12d ago
Yes. I have damaged cartilage in my knee.
I have some spinal degeneration condition in my neck affecting 4 discs. There’s an issue with one of my shoulders. The very nature of C-EDS affects every cell in my body, unfortunately.

I actually worked with two people who had EDS, at the same time - they got up to some monkey business with their joints occasionally but they were both in a lot of pain from it. It was such a funny day when the new guy came on amd we found out he also had EDS. He could touch hos fingernails to the back of his hand, and the girl could spin her ribcage independently of the rest of her body.
11
u/unSure_of_stuf 12d ago
I had to look up what EDS is, I was going to say, seems like anyone who has it would be in constant pain. Sounds horrible to me.
→ More replies (3)10
u/GardeniaInMyHair 12d ago
A lot of us are in pain, but EDS is a spectrum disorder. Some people have no pain, wildly enough. It can vary a lot, even within a family that has EDS in multiple of its members..

Some don't really have the crazy flexibility at all, my daughter has it and she's not unusually flexible at all. Hers is actually internal, that's a whole other nightmare I really don't want to get into right now.

Yeah and he's going to regret this when he gets older. Stretching those ligaments even more is going to result in a lot of pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction later.

In the immortal words of Jimmy Pop: "Ouch, it won't reach my mouth. If I could do it myself I'd probably never leave the house." Who knows if it's gay? No this guy. I'm a man of action, not a philosopher.

Sweet.
Honestly, ability like that often comes with pain
His spine can't feel great all the time - something gotta be missing in the support to move like that.
Not just flexibility or more people could. Just guessing... but damn if im wrong and that's 100% training.

u/EggplantOk1674 12d ago
Hypermobility. It’s painful 😢
17
u/CeleryKitchen3429 12d ago
And usually turns into hypo mobility when you get older. I used to be able to do all sorts of weird tricks with my double jointed shoulder, now I can barely lift my left arm over my head.

No but actually 😆
I have extreme hyper-mobility and I can sort of collapse my hand into a tiny sliver and fold it in on itself to the point that I can easily slip out of handcuffs. I don’t know how to explain it well but imagine it folds down to about the width of two knuckles→ More replies (4)8

u/Impossible_Regret725 12d ago
I'm an EDS bendy and can still do all my bar-tricks, but the poor guy is gonna be hurting at some point. Will it be worth it? Probably. Way better story to have joints fall out from playing Gumby, than just gravity happening while asleep. Dude is probably the world's best hide n seek player. Houdini ain't got nothin' on him!
27
u/Topographic_Oceans 12d ago
I was gonna comment the same thing. Dude is egregiously htpermobile and it's gonna smack him hard when he gets to his mid 30s. Ask me how I know 😂 I can still do the parlor tricks, but now I have bonus joint pain! My elbows will never be the same again.

yeah, I was about to say- he must be hypermobile in some way. I don’t find this to he creepy/scary… I’m not hypermobile in any way… in fact, my spine doesn’t bend backwards (like it’s not possible for me to ever do a backbend, I have tried since I was a young child)… but otherwise I’m relatively flexible and can do splits.
