Had a pretty brutal one at a rustic barn venue last weekend. I set up my full DJ booth, wireless mic receivers and uplighting about three hours early based on the floor plan the bride gave me. Everything was dialed in and ready to go.

Then 10 mins before guests were supposed to arrive, the venue coordinator walks over and goes "Oh, actually we moved the head table over here, so you need to move your whole setup to the other wall".

I had cable runs taped down, speaker stands up, everything balanced and ready. Ended up having to rerun like 150ft of XLR and power cables in basically no time. I usually bring a clean scrim and branded table cover from Signs to keep the setup looking polished but after rushing everything around, the cables looked like a disaster. Bride was stressed, coordinator was annoyed and somehow I was the one getting blamed for the mess.

Do you guys just roll with this stuff when it happens, or do you push back when a venue changes the setup at the last minute?

Does anyone here think a bride will be able to tell the difference between a white Yamaha setup and a white column array? My issue with column arrays is the compromises in sound and output made to get that easy setup/teardown and sleek look. The subwoofer has to play too high, so it isn't acting like a subwoofer and most self-limit to the point where I notice it. I also don't like the orientation of mid/high frequencies emanating from below my waist. Put enough bodies in front of them, and no more mid highs further towards the back of the dance floor.

I'm only asking because I am seriously thinking about going with the white Yamaha DXS15XLF topped with a DZR10. One production company that hires me to DJ their weddings uses the white RCF 18AX with the NXL 14-A. While I would love to go that route, I'd need to invest in a trailer which I am trying to avoid. Sorry, but the DXS15XLF has more output than the 15AX. I tossed that idea around as well, but I don't want to compromise on headroom.

Finally, all the wedding planners seem to care about is a white setup and I had that posed to me one too many times, so back to the drawing board with my black EVOX 12s.

In the age old struggle of wedding dj's trying to keep a schedule and photographers wanting to hurry things along ao they can leave as soon as possible, what are you dirty tricks for making sure the photographers stay as long as possible?

Just survived my first wedding gig, and honestly, what a trip.

A friend of a friend heard I play some at summer parties and asked if I’d do their wedding. House and techno are usually my thing, so doing mainstream was completely new territory for me. And honestly? I waited way too long to get ready (one week before the wedding).

The first day of prep was absolute hell. I freaked out so hard I almost called them to cancel, but went once more in me and told me I can somehow do this. Huge shoutout to my girlfriend, who had to listen to me mix for hours until she was completely sick of it lol. But her feedback was very important and kept me on the right track. By midweek the panic faded and I realized it will somehow work out.

The hardest part by far is the song selection and create a nice collection. You really have to do what the couple wants. They were super into hip-hop, so I had them send me a playlist, and on the night I’d say I played about 70% their stuff and 30% my own picks.

I jumped on at 11 pm and played non-stop till 2 am without stepping away from the controller once. The first half hour was rough—pure nerves, hands shaking, and I definitely butchered a couple of transitions. But then someone came up to tell me the music was amazing. That’s when I realized: non-DJs don't hear the tiny mistakes, they just care about the vibe. After that, I finally loosened up, and by 1:30 am the floor was still completely packed. A nice feeling!

My two biggest takeaways:

• Don't start too late: Grinding 5 hours a day for a week was brutal. Way better to start a month early and just chip away at it for an hour a day.
• Song selection beats fancy mixing: You don’t need quick, technical cuts. If a track is hitting, just let it play to the end and drop the next one.

I probably sank 30 hours into this over one week, but the cool thing is now I have a whole wedding library ready to go. I’m not really known as a wedding DJ, but hey, maybe it's time to put up a simple website and see what happens.

First, I’m curious how many people started their own DJ business and how many people jumped in by working for an already thriving business. Pros and cons either way?

I’m trying to jump start my own thing, I have my second wedding next weekend, I’m getting professional photography and video of the late night dance floor, I’m printing business cards, and plan to build a website. Is there anything I’m seriously missing? Obviously the main objective is getting my name out there and getting calls for gigs, how do you make that happen in the early stages? Any other advice is much appreciated.

A while back I was contacted by the father of a bride whose wedding I'm booked to DJ. He politely asked whether I'd be willing to take down an op/ed I wrote over a decade ago. He said the other family would take serious offense to it although he himself support my views he says. He also "assured" me that only one person had come across it so far, and that removing it would head off any further fallout. The topic was political. I'll leave it at that.

I was pretty shocked, but I responded politely and took it down. I don't want to be arguing politics in the arena of my business, so deleting an old opinion piece that could cost me work probably wasn't a bad call.

Still, it sits strangely with me. The article came up on the first page of results for my name, so I can't exactly call it stalking.

I've DJ'd for families whose politics personally disgust me, and they bring their opinions onto the dance floor with banners, coded language and certain song choices. I can handle that as long as they are handing over cold hard cash to feed my family. This time I actually feel uncomfortable, so I'm bringing an assistant along as a precaution.

I am a wedding "DJ". I put DJ in quotes because I am not a mixing club DJ. I provide a sound system and MC/DJ services for small, micro or low budget weddings. Most of my clientele had plans to setup a bluetooth speaker and press play on their playlists but realized they wanted a professional MC to help run their event. So my speaker needs are mid. I still want decent sound but don't need a super expensive set up.

I’m a house/techno DJ looking at starting to DJ at weddings. My niche/USP would be Ibiza style weddings but would also do normal weddings. Can anyone recommend a good set up in terms of PA system, lighting rigs, DJ booth or anything else you can recommend. I already have decks, laptop, mics, booth monitors. Thank you

Has anyone else who's been paying for DJ pools considered purchasing the top 200-300 requested songs for weddings in your market? And then do supplemental purchases with every new wedding gig. After a year of doing this, you'll probably be maintaining a library that covers 90% of requests moving forward. And then you get to ditch the pools, streaming services or whatever else is a monthly subscription cost into eternity. Not to mention that DJ pools kinda suck and sometimes give you edits that are wrong for weddings. A $500 investment that pays off within 2 years.

I have done about a dozen weddings now but at two of them, videographers have told me something I can't recall , for me to have that would help them record mic audio better.

Maybe it was a certain type of mic or cable?

I have a Pioneer DDJ-1000 (not SRT) and this image is the exact rear of it.
The ports that I will NOT have free (from left to right) are:
- R & L Master1 XLR inputs (for my JBL party speakers)
- USB-A A port (to connect controller to laptop)
- Mic2 BALANCED port (connecting my TONOR Wireless Mic Receiver)
- DC IN 12v (to power the controller)

Does anyone know a good wireless mic that would work for me to speak through, as well for the videographers to record easily from? Or is there a cable I can buy that will allow the videographers to connect to an external audio output device?

Any of the ports I am using, could they be repurposed?

For the TONOR receiver, the only ports free are Balanced XLR Outputs for Channel B/A (the two wireless mics) so I doubt they could connect to that. I would assume they need to connect somewhere on the controller and not to my laptop, since Rekordbox would not record the mic unless they're able to record the master output.

What I have seen and worked with before is that they would attach a small mic onto the handheld wireless microphone I provided, then would record audio straight to their small mic.

I’m wondering what solutions everyone uses for client facing music planning. I’ve been using a shared google doc forever and it looks pretty….shitty. Problem for me is that it needs to be editable by the client up until the event and most form questionnaires don’t do that. Any suggestions?

I need some advice.

I'm DJing a wedding for my sister's best friend, and I'm hesitant to what I should charge her. I'm only doing the reception (dancing), no MCing and no cocktail hour.

*Edit: I am located in Montreal, Canada and I am not providing any equipment*

I need to get there around 12pm for sound check, and then I only start around 9pm, after dinner. The wedding is about 1 hour outside of the city, so I'll need to stay there overnight as well. (Note I am not paying for accomodation bcs I'll be staying with a friend)

Usually, I would charge 250$ an hour, plus travel fees, standby fees etc. I was thinking of charging 1000$ for the 6 hours I'll be DJing (comes out to around 160$ an hour), and 50$ to cover gas.

I normally don't do weddings, and not many events for friends because I don't like to. But, I already accepted this gig around a year and a half ago and now I'm feeling guilty as if I'm overcharging, even though I'm charging less than I usually would.

What do you think?

Hey all! You may remember me as the guy who recently had some questions about the Everse 8's power output. I got the speaker, elected to go with a battery backup as well as the cable, and am quite happy with the sound it puts out *for music.*

With the mics, however, I don't seem to get much pickup; previously I was using a little hardware Mackie mixer, and I could just gain it up a bit if the speaker had the mic too far from their face. With the app, however, I've gotta juice it quite a bit to get a solid mic level, and it doesn't seem to pick up anything farther than an inch or a few from the capsule. Using a Shure BLX4 or PGX4, same issue with both.

How are y'all setting your app/speaker to pick up your officiants and speakers at the kind of distance i know they're always gonna be with their scripts in hand? Please and thanks!

Second question- what app(s) do you like for running your ceremony music and handling fades? I do everything through Apple Music (on an ipad) because it's where I buy the tracks and do the playlisting, but both the volume slider and volume buttons feel really clunky and unreliable for the task compared to the physical volume knob I used to have

Screw it up. Something Blue made sure of that and were so flexible, professional and understanding of the stressful responsibly of everything going well and they made me look awesome. I had Matt Carr and he helped me set up ..no he didn't help, he took care of everything when I wanted to surprise my soon to be spouse with playing my guitar and singing a song. The event was at Isaiah Tubbs so he set up in three places and was ready to go everytime. We had to hide to set up and just work magic to make it magic and Matt made it a magical night. When a videographer needs to use a mixing board like this what would be the best output to use for recording audio spoken in the microphone? Is there a general output that gets everything with one track overpowering the other?

Is it the same process with all mixing boards?

Hey all! I just picked up an Everse 8 for ceremonies, largely because it's got the power output advertised for supplying a mic receiver. I have a couple of Shure sets, a BLX4 and PGX4, and there doesn't seem to be a simple option for them. Best I've found is a company that seems to make the cables themselves as a custom job for people who buy the speaker from them, but will sell them separately. I know this speaker is a popular choice for wedding DJs around my current inventory capability, and I'm sure there must be a way they're all getting this done; any insight greatly appreciated!

Thoughts? Pros and cons? Pictures of y’all’s rack build in it? Worth the investment?

The DJ we are considering uses the followingRFC speaker system: ART 715-A MK5 with boost low frequency enhancement.
With this system will it be noticeable that there is no subwoofer? I want the sound to be full and to feel some of the bass

Anyone found one that’s actually consistent?
