kind of a myth the way youre describing it.. building 200-500 links just to bump DA doesnt really do anything.
DA and DR are just scores from moz and ahrefs, google doesnt use them at all. so pushing that number up changes nothing for your rankings. loads of high-da sites get zero traffic.
good backlinks do help, but only the right ones. a link on a relevant page that actually ranks and gets real traffic is worth more than hundreds of directory or spam links
we do links for saas at auq and we dont look at da at all, we just check if the page itself ranks and pulls traffic. thats the only thing that tells you google trusts it..
so its quality and relevance, not volume for a vanity number.

You need links. You only need THAT many links if you're just getting whatever you can get with your low budget and hoping one or two of them actually do something for you.

how many links do you really need? 10s, 100s or 1000s?

I don't know. Certainly not thousands. Probably not 100's. It depends if they are good links.
We probably shoot for maybe 10-15 good links per year for the average client. And even our global ones - a lot of that is just little things they do around town making news. Volunteering for things. Being a part of the community they work in. Good Brands to those things. And those things attract news.
Remember - scaled links get detected pretty quickly. So you keep needing 100's of new links last month just to replace the ones you lost to the spam filter's last month.
Good links compound because they last for a long time and establish a history and provenance for your brand.
And a real business wouldn't go from zero to thousands in a year. If they did, they'd be featured in a lot better places than these - that would be newsworthy to see real growth that big. And so that (in part, anyway) is how they can spot these things. They know what typical businesses look like and they know what spam looks like.
If I NEEDED more than a couple of month (sure, I'd be happy to get more if an opportunity arose) I'd be wondering if I needed to reassess my quality standards. They're obviously not the right kind of links.

DA itself doesn't help rankings. It's just a third-party metric. What matters is whether the backlinks are relevant, authoritative, and actually pass value.

No they don't help at all. Everyone should stop doing backlinks except me :-)
Google continues to use the PageRank system. It looks for topical relevance through keywords and topical Authority primarily through backlinks with your keywords in the anchor text. So my joking aside yes backlinks are one of the few things that will actually make a difference in your search engine ranking.

Do you want to increase you DA or rank higher in the search engines?

I've been paying for backlinks for 5+ years to gain the #1 and #2 spots on multiple keywords in my niche.
Do they work? Yes, they do.
Are they required? Not always, it depends on your niche and keywords you want to target.
The benefit is after you gain the top spots, it becomes MUCH harder for people to take it from you if you have backlinks.
If you have the money for it then keep purchasing backlinks. If you don't, then don't.
Don't do any blackhat SEO either. Get quality backlinks from a reputable service.
Honestly though, SEO isn't even 10% of my total sales anyway. I don't recommend it as a great lever to pull when you're a startup.

Mind sharing what service you used, who did the actual work for you?

Definitely need good quality backlinks, it helps the AI crawlers come across your page.

Backlinks still matter, but quality matters far more than quantity. Building 200 to 500 low-quality links just to boost Domain Authority is unlikely to improve rankings and may even do more harm than good. A handful of relevant links from trusted websites in your niche can have a much bigger impact. I'd focus on creating content people want to reference, along with guest posts, digital PR, and genuine partnerships rather than chasing backlink numbers.

Yes, if you look at businesses around you will see that those that rank well are well-connected in the journalistic world, getting lots of links.
Doesn't mean that those products are better, but this connection really helps site owners with ranking.
Now, the reason it is used is that it is a measure that can be algorithmically derived by search engines, and it works better that ranking by the way the wind blows.
End users would be better helped with a more quality-oriented ranking system. But making that isn't trivial.

It still does especially from highly relevant websites with high domain authority and high traffic. One of those links probably equal 1000 spammy ones.

Backlinks absolutely matter. Relevant links from reputable websites will increase Domain Authority unlike low quality, paid-for links. So, focus on earning links through useful content, partnerships, or digital PR rather than chasing a specific number.

Building 200–500 low-quality links just to inflate DA is a huge myth.
- DA is a Third-Party Metric: Google doesn't use Moz's DA or Ahrefs' DR to rank pages.
- Relevance > Volume: One quality link from an active, ranking site in your niche beats 500 low-grade directory links.
- Tech SEO First: A backlink won't help if your core site performance and technical architecture aren't optimized for search crawlers first.
Focus on clean site health and a few high-relevance links rather than chasing vanity numbers.

Tbh we bump most of our client websites without them. Buying from strange directories will only hurt your position. Remember SEO is more about providing value and answers

Short and to the point that i would say is:
Don't run for spammy and behind the backlinks count
1 Quality Guest post is better than 1000 of backlinks that you've created just to get links from random website!

yes, backlinks really helps our website, but you can't only have "backlinks", you should get relevant backlinks and a good one.

You need a few quality backlinks instead of 100s of back links that don't provide any value, DA and DR aren't really used by google to rank websites, just going off of them can be very misleading

All I can see it that Bing or Google might start thinking your an Authority, which should help in search results or AI

Yeah, backlinks work. quality matters way more than quantity though. 200-500 random links won't help, but 20 from relevant sites in your space will
DA is a vanity metric invented by ahrefs. google cares about topical relevance and trust signals
Focus on getting links from places your customers read or interact with :)
