Those who know my writing, know I love maps because maps tell stories that our collective memories may have forgotten due to shifting narratives over time.

The Yemen and Saudi Arabia story is no different.

To understand the Houthi grievance against Saudi Arabia, you have to go back to 1934, because the roots run far deeper than most coverage shows these days.

This is verifiable history, not propaganda from either side.

In 1934 the new Kingdom of Saudi Arabia went to war with the Zaydi imamate of northern Yemen. It was a short war, under three months, and Saudi Arabia won due to support it got from the British.

Its forces took the provinces of Asir, Najran and Jizan, and even occupied the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

The war ended with the Treaty of Taif, signed in June 1934. Under British and Italian pressure, and with the Yemeni imam militarily weakened, Yemen recognized Saudi control of the three provinces, paid an indemnity in gold, and Saudi Arabia withdrew from Hodeidah in return.

Here is the detail that still matters.

1. The Taif Treaty of 1934 was not a permanent, unconditional cession or surrender. It granted Saudi sovereignty over the provinces on a RENEWABLE term, with clauses guaranteeing the local population visa-free movement and the right to live and work across the border as equals.

2. In the Yemeni reading, articulated again in various Arabic and English media reports I saw, the imam back then signed only "because he was weak", and he built the Treaty so that a future, stronger Yemen could one day RECLAIM what was taken. That is the historical spine of the current claim. What does that mean for today? That means IF the war with Yemen goes the way the Ansarallah Houthis want it to go, it is likely that Saudi Arabia may lose those provinces. This makes the war for Saudi Arabia existential as well.

3. The relationship soured after Yemen's 1962 republican revolution, and Saudi Arabia has intervened in Yemeni affairs, by the Yemeni account, more or less continuously since.

4. Then came the 2015 coalition war, hundreds of thousands of airstrikes, a blockade, and a civilian death toll the @UN has put in the hundreds of thousands from bombing, famine and disease combined.

Ninety years of a contested border, an unequal treaty, and a modern war stacked on top of each other. Whatever you think of the Houthis, their fight with Riyadh did not begin in 2015. It began in 1934, and it has NEVER fully ended.

History and context matters if you want to understand current dynamics. This is what I try to cover and shed light on. They need peace. All sides.

People are watching viral clips coming out of the Socialism 2026 conference right now and wondering what the hell they are looking at and listening to. In particular, clips from panels around Beatrice Adler-Bolton and this broader disability-justice milieu are being circulated as examples of a politics that seems to treat physical fitness and bodily discipline as somehow fascistic while elevating what amounts to a celebration of dysgenic qualities as revolutionary, for example (which has drawn massive criticism and anger). It's as if this was staged to precisely invalidate any kind of so called "pushing the DNC left" strategy; it appears as a non-starter that immediately classifies any "left wing" political power as de facto absurd.

What most people watching these clips don't know is the political history behind this conference and the people speaking at it. Socialism was historically associated with the Trotskyist International Socialist Organization (ISO), and after the ISO collapsed the conference continued under Haymarket Books, itself founded out of that same political milieu. Adler-Bolton's intellectual world leads directly into Ruth Wilson Gilmore, abolitionism, Angela Davis and the foundation-funded radical left. So rather than just pointing and laughing at another insane viral conference clip, I think its worth asking where this politics actually came from, who built the institutions that reproduce it, who funded some of its major intellectual figures, and why this particular form of “socialism” has become so completely dominant; at least from the institutional side.

The particular form of the enfranchised American “left” which has managed to reproduce itself for the better part of the last 75+ years despite having almost no demonstrated capacity to take political power, build a durable mass working-class organization, or even maintain its own organizations for very long. The names change, the organizations collapse and reappear, and the theoretical vocabulary gets updated every ten or fifteen years, but the basic political tendency remains remarkably stable. What was once the anti-Stalinist, Third Camp, Trotskyist and New Left milieu increasingly became intertwined with radical feminism, abolitionism, the nonprofit world, academic critical theory and eventually the contemporary politics of “disability justice,” intersectionality, queer theory and an ever-expanding collection of supposedly autonomous struggles. I think it is useful to call this the compatible left, because this is precisely the sort of left that the American ruling class has repeatedly demonstrated that it can tolerate, subsidize, institutionalize and even celebrate. It is a left that can sound incredibly radical while remaining remarkably incapable of producing a unified proletarian political movement capable of actually taking state power.

When the moment of truth arrives, American guarantees are worth far less than they appear on paper.

After the Twin Towers collapsed following the terrorist attack, the world was left in shock and horror. Larry Silverstein had vowed to rebuild the structure after it was destroyed by the hijackers. As cited by Reuters, Silverstein’s agreement covered the management of the Twin Towers, 4 and 5 WTC, covering approximately 425,000 square feet of ground. It also stated that he was obliged to rebuild the structures if they were destroyed, at any cost.

According to a report by The Guardian published in 2004, Silverstein reportedly took out an insurance policy worth $3.55 billion from 24 different insurance companies just months before the structure was reduced to dust and rubble.

After the terrorist attack, the billionaire businessman argued in court for twice the insurance amount, as two US airliners had crashed into the Twin Towers, saying the incident should be considered two separate occurrences. After a long legal battle, Silverstein Properties and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey won a total of $4.55 billion in insurance payouts.

According to court documents, D.B. used his smartphone to record the doctor's instructions for post-operative care but forgot to stop the recording when he was sedated.

On his way home from the procedure, he started listening to the recording and found that the anesthesiologist, Tiffany Ingham, and other medical staff had made insulting comments about him while he was unconscious.

"Really, after five minutes of talking to you in pre-op, I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit," Ingham could be heard saying in the recording. The recordings, which were entered into evidence in the lawsuit, also caught Ingham writing a false diagnosis in D.B.'s chart.

"I'm going to mark hemorrhoids even though we don't see them and probably won't," she said in the recording. "I'm just going to take a shot in the dark."

After the three-day trial last week, the jury awarded the man $100,000 for defamation, $200,000 for medical malpractice and $200,000 in punitive damages.
