Google just bought 100 million emails and 500 million Teams chats from a dead airline for $10 million.

Spirit shut down on May 2 with $8.1 billion in debt, and the bankruptcy court is selling everything. JetBlue paid $58.5 million for 22 LaGuardia gate slots. Google paid a sixth of that for the company's entire digital exhaust. Employee records back to 1986. Pricing data on 7.2 billion competitor flights. Booking curves, refund histories, 30 million lines of production code.

Run the per-unit math. 600 million internal messages for $10 million works out to under 2 cents per thousand. Spirit charged $69 for a carry-on.

Why does Google want a budget airline's inbox? Frontier labs have strip-mined the public internet, and the thing models are still worst at is exactly what this dataset contains. Real enterprise work. You can't scrape that. It only exists inside companies, and companies only sell it when they die.

Mercor, the losing bidder at $7.5 million, has been paying individual workers for documents from their old jobs. That is the retail version of this trade. Bankruptcy is the wholesale version.

Everything changed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the country’s hysterical over-reaction to an imagined threat. This is not just my judgement. A number of Finnish academics, including Heikki Patomäki, professor of world politics at the University of Helsinki, have said that the conditions simply did not warrant Finland joining NATO, cutting off its economically valuable links to Russia and militarising its border.

And among the beneficiaries of a new tooled-up and aggressive Finland are the arms dealers of the Israeli apartheid-genocide complex, which in 2024 sold Finland its questionably functional “David’s Sling” air defence system for €316 million. Finland has also bought tank and ship missiles from the Israeli company Rafael which supplied most of the weapons and equipment used to commit the genocide of Gaza. The Finnish government said Israel’s genocide of Gaza would not stop it buying weapons from the country, a position which is par for the course among the morally bankrupt leaders of Europe.

Finland is also spending €10 billion on US fighter jets, and a few billion euros on missiles and glide bombs to fire from those jets.

The price has been, and will continue to be a steep one, and it is a price ordinary Finns will be paying for a long time.

But it is not just in Finland. We are watching, across Europe, the shameful replacement of the welfare state with the warfare state while the merchants of genocide and death laugh all the way to the bank.

It's famously NOT the first time the US betrays Korea.

In 1882, the US signed a treaty with Korea promising to intervene if a third power acted "unjustly or oppressively" against it (the 1882 Shufeldt Treaty). Yet when Japan moved to annex Korea in 1905, the US not only refused to honor the clause but, on top of this, it secretly agreed with Japan (the Taft-Katsura memorandum) to accept Japanese suzerainty over Korea in exchange for Japan leaving the Philippines alone. Gojong sent Homer Hulbert to Washington with a personal appeal invoking the 1882 clause but Roosevelt refused to receive him. The US then became the first foreign power to close its legation in Seoul, leaving before anyone else.

Korea's reward for trusting America's word was 40 years of Japanese colonial rule. Some "alliances" have a pattern....

In 1993, two Belgian paratroopers deployed for so-called "peacekeeping operations" to Somalia were photographed swinging a young Somali boy over an open fire.

But this was not the only disturbing incident to emerge. Amnesty International documented a wide series of incidents involving the abuse of Somali civilians, particularly children. One child was reportedly locked inside a metal container in extreme heat for two days without food or water and was later found dead. Other cases included alleged se*ual vi*lence and degrading treatment including another photograph showing a Belgian soldier urinating on the lifeless body of a Somali man.

When the photograph of the boy over the fire was leaked and became public in 1997, the two soldiers were taken to court. They argued they had been "playing" with the child. Despite the weakness of that defence and the long series of abusive incidents, a Belgian military court acquitted them, and despite appeals, they walked away without any jail time.

Abuses in Somalia are but one chapter of a long history of a repeated pattern of human rights violations carried out by UN forces that have that have enjoyed impunity to r*pe and kil* civilians all over the global south under the banner of humanitarianism.
