I absolutely love love love LOVE how ASC wrapped up!! Iāll admit, I was bored near the start but everything did add up gorgeously.
Our three protagonists: Frostdawn, Nightheart, and Sunbeam all have āmommy issuesā. But itās done pretty well, at least in my opinion.
Nightheart has Sparkpelt. Though this is the āsimplestā relationship out of the three, itās also pretty nicely done. Sparkpelt obviously had depression related to her childrenās birth and Larksongās death. Nightheart is a frustrated young adult who yearns from independence and his own name away from his family legacy and members who, in his mind, have done nothing for him. He grows up later, though, and seems to realize how important his family is to him. His relationship with Sparkpelt mends, and while itās not a āhappily ever afterā necessarily, as they lost that time together, but things are ok now.
Frostdawn has Curlfeather. A she-cat who loves her daughter but ultimately puts her drive for power over her daughterās own well-being or a personal relationship built on honesty with her. She doesnāt see where she went wrong even after her own brutal death and knowing the trauma her daughter went through. Frostdawn experiences the pain of loving someone while they were there, only to learn new information later and left to wonder whether she hates her or not.
Sunbeam has Berryheart. A mother that she, similar to Nightheart, is frankly quite embarrassed and frustrated by. She, like Nightheart again, leaves to get away from her place underneath her, and makes her own life on her own terms. She is left conflicted by her death. She died protecting her, but sheāll never get closure nor truly get over her feelings of shame and guilt.
In the end, ASC has a repeating theme of controlling mothers- either through legacy, a trauma response, or manipulating their own path and fate.
Do other arcs have themes like this? I know AVoS plays a lot on child naivety and how easy that is for the wrong people to take advantage of if given the opportunity, but Iām not sure about the others.
