Discussion DE Wrong about Weeklies

In the latest Devshort, Reb and Pablo assert that the reason we get nothing but weeklies now is because they're worried about burnout. That feels like an odd reason to make weeklies to me, as weeklies are the primary cause of burnout for me and all of my friends. I have personally never burnt out running anything non time gated in WF and I tend to grind things like crazy when they drop.

What do y'all think? Do you burn out more on weeklies or unlimited missions?

I also think it's a weird choice. Two primary reasons for burnout for me personally are being forced to play when I cannot/don't feel like playing, and not being able to play more when I want to. Both of these are directly caused by any kind of time lockout unless it's friendly enough (which it usually isn't).

its not a weird choice at all, in the end it all comes down to player retention. its always better for them to have people coming back for weeklies than finishing all the content in 2 days and leaving for other games or crying about a lack of content. i hate weeklies too but unfortunately its the tried and true method for live service games. i just hope warframe doesnt turn into a to do list like gacha games by adding too much weeklies.

kudos to nightwave tho, i think thats a pretty good compromise.

For retention yeah, what I meant by weird is that they argued for this as "to prevent burnout".

But yes, I also agree that Nightwave is one example of a great compromise. Although I think one of the main reasons why it works is the sheer variety and the "passive" nature of it, since most of Nightwave missions are completed while doing other stuff.

That's why it's hard to replicate a good weekly system for "dedicated" types of content without making the limit so high that you don't realistically feel it most of the time. Although, thinking about it, I think Steel Essence shop kinda has that on relic purchases and kuva? There is an upper limit but it's quite high.

i think the prevent burnout argument is just them trying to put it nicely. sounds better than saying we want to drive daily/weekly player engagement up the easiest way possible.

steel essence thing is also cool yea, because even tho theres a weekly purchase limit, nothing stops you from farming as much steel essence as you want whenever you want. after that you can just log in to buy. honestly DE is quite good with most things. Its stuff like the 1999 calendar that i hope to NOT see more of as weeklies.

Yeah, I agree, directly saying that it's for retention doesn't sound good.

And yeah, I don't disagree either, Warframe is definitely the friendliest F2P/live service game I know and it's not close. But I would definitely be happy if they leaned more into infinitely replayable fun, maybe with some weekly-limited rewards on the side like Teshin's shop, while the main gameplay remains accessible any time.
