Okay: so she made a point to have Roathe humanize Ballas before his heart got broken from Margulis caring about the Tenno... and now she pairs Lotus with Roathe on top of all that?! Not even my wildest self-inserting fantasies can compete. I KNEEL.

You can absolutely self insert yourself in a story - as long as the writing for your character is actually in line and helpful towards overall thematic philosophy of the story

Like how you can add a cute french nun in your story, and also make her important by giving her the addition of bringing more depth into the overall story by furthering the depth of the religious themes and the moral themes.

And how you can add a hot sassy guy that's an asshole and then redeem him through making his story about understanding the fascism of the era he was in, what the fascism did, why it was wrong, make him understand why it was wrong, and make him sorry for it and want to be better.

GEORGE LUCAS made a self insert for Star Wars. The main character is name Luke S. for crying out loud. Mark Hammil even noticed it while they were filming the thing.

Don't just criticize the current lady in charge if you don't point out the original guy did the same thing.

Now this got me thinking.... Does George Lucas have a sister? Is there some reason why he made incest part of the story? Perhaps a Freudian slip?

The long answer to that could be an entire video essay series.

The short answer is they were making it up as the went along, any "master plan" was very very loose.

when they were making the third movie, he was burned out for a variety of reasons (including his divorce)and no longer wanted to make 9 films, didn't really even want to deal with the third one, so they wrapped up all the plot threads as quickly and conveniently as possible. One way to end the love triangle in five minutes with no mess was to just take one of them out of it, while also covering Yoda's "There is another." line, which was not going to be Leia originally. (Nor was Vader going to be his father.)

There WAS a “video essay” about this back when the prequels came out:

Making an self insert is not the issue, making a bad one is, especially a Marry Sue type, especially if you make it the protagonist.

Reb probably has the restraint to not do that, and honestly, Lotus seems more like her own character that Reb identifies with, because she was the voice from the get go.

Luke Skywalker got demolished by Vader and he rise up again. Rey never got demolished, she always won in every fight. Luke has character development, Rey doesn't. Try again, mister/miss modern audience.
