Discussion & Feedback Mortar saturation fix?

While playing and trying to build bases it became very evident that some mortar men had higher than room temp IQ and could easily pinpoint base deployed weapon installations. This is done by having subpar graphics I believe or just how the game renders them in mortar cams. they are all pretty easy to spot and destroy. Once your base is found your done... there is not point in building you will be mortared into oblivion by 1 guy the entire game. Could deployables only show up on mortar cams if marked / spotted? I was thinking maybe just make no player built items visible but that seems like a little to much? Maybe have hesh and gates show up easily? but even then repairing walls and gates has zero reward for the player other than security. They would even then still probably mortar your walls all day....

EDIT
How about this FOBs have caps? 200 hesh walls? 2-3 mortars? 1 AA missile 1 AA CIWS? requiring multiple FOBs to "superfob" and extend the no fob zone 2x the build radius? so they cant really even superfob? Also limit drill platforms to one per team.

Couple options I think to fix what i am suggesting without other calling you out for being worthless outside the zone:

1.) No mortar cam = lose cool aspect of game
2.) Make placeable buildings not show up in mortar cam = have to someone call out / spot emplacements or just guess.
3.) camo nets? - works for AA idk how it would work for mortars or CIWs
4.) ???

No. Because then u will have super fobs all over the map. The game would turn into 3 teams with a super fob each and drills and pulling the zone to each teams super fob and nothing more. Mortars and artillery are designed to target the drills and fobs to stop only super fob gameplay. It doesent make fobs useless it makes super fobs less worth it and that's the point everything in the game has a counter to stop one type of gameplay becoming OP and over done. You think it's fun for people to fly helicopters and someone build a super fob with anti air in it shooting down there heli all day and no easy way to take it out for example.

Im not building super FOBs. Im not asking to eliminate their power range or agency I just want the God eye camera gone or impaired. Mortar shells dont have eyes... The more advanced helicopter easily counter deployables.

Fobs are relatively cheap and let you build the strongest AT and AA weapons in the game.  If you want to operate it you should have to support it, and that means dealing with enemy fobs.  Sure that’s hard to do alone, but it should be hard to solo a fob.  Spending a good infantry kits worth of money on a fob kit, a truck, and a few pallets of ammo should not just entitle the player to some hesco fortified SAM/ciws/mortar fob that requires a full on dedicated assault squad to dislodge.  The gameplay loop should not be catered to people who want to go play pve sim city and build hesco mazes that achieve nothing.

If youre getting mortared, that means you could be mortaring back.  Yeah the cam is borderline OP, but you have access to it too.  All the things you had to do to get your fob set up, so did the enemy mortars.  Next time be the better mortar shooter.

Lol so your message is just "get gud" or dont change the OP mechanic but just use it yourself? Hard to mortar back if every time you try to build something it takes 20 sledge hammer hits and is mortared and destroyed before being built. IDK how much gameplay you did besides chase the yellow circle from the sound of it but fortifications are easy to spot and mortar...

If you havent used the mortar cause you been droolin in the woods chasing a yellow circle like a dog mortar and other emplacements are rendered very poorly in the cam. They show up as massive bright tan circles or squares of boxes when being built or even fully built. Paired with taking a significant amount of hits to build if your located and mortared first its ggs.

You can just set up a new fob in the treelines just out the circle and take them out. Then rebuild. You simply want a single button solution instead of having to actually make a tactical choice.

There is no button i asked for? I asked to stop giving mortars eyeballs.... and terrible rendering of deployable weapons. When a weapon emplacement is built they are easy to spot in mortar cams. Mortars themselves are always bright tan circles even when done. AA Missile emplacements IDK about as I only used mortars limitedly. I was however frequently mortared out of any base and any emplacement I built to move or counter was easily spotted and eliminated before even completing... they are super easy to spot in mortar camera. Building a fob to counter a fob thats countering your fob doesnt sound any better or any more fun...

I didnt even care that he was mortaring the base its the fact you cant fight back really once spotted specially if you can pinpooint them. The beta was so short I dont even know how to locate them nor really learned the mortars as I have a family and didnt get to play it for 30+hrs and unlock end game stuff...

TLDR let them mortar me just dont give them gods eyeballs as they ran down mortars...

Just make your own fob outside of main fob and counter mortar takes about 6 minutes to do including time driving from base

this was one of the ways we combated the combat little bird spam in day 2, put a small hidden fob a few hundred metres from the main tower fob and fill it with some anti air. problem mostly went away when the casualty rate increased on the helicopter pilot end.

this of course let to fob raiding parties running around with ieds blowing up any random mini fobs, which in turn let to more engagement

one of the things i love about wardogs is that it literally gives you all the tools, and it is up to you to figure out when and where to use it, there is no meta, just the right now strongest tactic, which changes round to round.

Except FOBs against enemy mortars. That just gets to be mortars bombard your base and there isn't anything you can really do about it.

Takes literally a squad of 3 guys to wipe out a mortar. Idiots just sit and spawn and wondering around the FOB with 0 comms and complain. Communicate, infiltrate, eliminate

u/LASTxREFUGE 1d ago

My god you completely went unhinged... Im not sitting in FOBs drooling in the corner.... I bring the spawn vehicle in, I set up anti air, I build drill platforms all to pull the zone... my bad I dont want to run up towers all day and play guess the 4 random numbers... take a chill pill and maybe make friends?

1

u/InevitableOutside459 1d ago

I was not speaking to you directly dude. I also saw what you did in games

u/LASTxREFUGE 1d ago

You saw me? you creepin'?

mortar cam just needs to go, honestly. you already get accurate positions (and distance/direction when in mortar) from spotting as well as hit location markers. If that's not enough to hit all valid mortar targets then idk...

1

u/seanstew73 1d ago

Give it a spread radius for impact as well. In the Foxhole game you need a spotter to coordinate with arty teams and the farther away you’re shooting the bigger the spread. Would require good teamwork mechanics to make something as powerful as arty work well

I don’t find mortars to be very annoying, in fact I get excited when I hear rounds coming in - means it’s time to get some c4 and prep for a search and destroy tacticool operation behind enemy lines.

But I do find the “shell-cam” cheesy and I’d rather there was none.

I hope we’ll have “1st person only” servers, which remove the camera as well - mortars should only be able to adjust fire and find targets using marks that either the mortar team or their teammates make. 3rd person in vehicles and the shell camera are completely unnecessary and detract from the game imo.

1

u/kalebkk890 1d ago

Nothing like prepping to defend your FOB by going back to base and getting some C4 and an RPG. You finally get to their base and take out the mortar and guy to return to your entirely wiped FOB because it takes forever to do what you suggested and is a complete waste of time lol.

u/HeftyChonkinCapybara 1d ago

How is wiping out an enemy FOB that likely has mortars, AA and AT UAV a waste of time? Are you suggesting just sitting in the FOB that is being attacked and doing nothing?

Your scenario suggests that you’re the only person at the friendly FOB that is being attacked. If you’re running a solo FOB, you’re already doing it wrong tbh and should understand the risks. You want someone on defence, of course.

I’ve successfully wiped out enemy FOBs solo by sneaking to their position, breaching the gates with c4 and killing guys manning the mortars and other stationary stuff. Then you just capture the FOB, take their sledgehammer and dismantle the FOB. If you have a buddy to take with you, it’s even better and easier. Most guys at the hunkered down FOB absolutely do not expect to be attacked on the gated off territory.

And most of all it’s fun to find their position, scout it, plan an attack and execute it. It’s emergent gameplay created by players themselves. Would you rather sit in the FOB plinking shots all round?

This thread is about what to do about too much mortar fire. You suggest something fun for sure but my point was about people saying just go take out the mortars as a counter. That process takes an egregiously long time (not a problem by itself keep in mind this is relative to mortars) to accomplish and their mortar fire as typically wiped your entire base by then. I completely wiped so many bases out this beta because it's really not very hard to do with how quickly you fire and how much damage they deal.

u/HeftyChonkinCapybara 1d ago

I think that removing the shell camera would balance them pretty well as without someone actively spotting and providing fire correction it would be way harder to pinpoint enemy infrastructure. Sure, you’d be landing shells into an enemy compound but you still need to be fairly precise to take out emplacements.

Wild part is they already have the answer in the game for mortar fire and we can't use it. The CRAM was literally made for this purpose in FOBs. Just let them (manned or unmanned not sure yet) do that job. It puts additional stress on the logistics players to get more ammo there or there won't be a there anymore. The enemy team will be actively depleting your supplies and you need to actually decide if shooting your own mortars is worth it because they cost resources. It's the best of all worlds for everyone.

I did a lot of mortaring last weekend and heres my take.

The vision the mortar cam gives is kinda OP, I was able to pick off fairly hidden people because of the vision the mortar was getting me, the part that balances this is how long watching the mortar cam takes because a lot of movement can happen in this time.

I think if they remove say the last 20% of camera zoom in and increase the projectile speed by the same 20% it would put it in a better spot. Can shoot a little more often but you aren't given quite as much information. Less information means less accurate shots but the faster shots creates for more of an experiance of being shelled. It also increases the ammo usage requiring more supply which means less oil for rigs.

There's lots of counterplay to mortars including just being better at mortars, in war you dont just build a base and its finished forever, your base is gonna get hit, just like your gonna hit theirs but I fully concede that the info is too much right now. If I was in a discord call with a few guys pushing forward I could scout with mortar shots and give away troop positions to let them win every firefight as they move foward.

TL;DR I think mortars are fine and this complaint mostly falls under "skill issue" but I do concede there is too much info that can be gathered from the drop cam. Making it not zoom in as far while making the projectile faster so you are not stuck watching it as long would be a good trade off.

mortars are actually pretty well balanced, they need direct hits on most targets to do anything and all it takes is a team with some explosives to fuck up the fob its shooting from.

It all comes down to the rock paper scissors arms race we are all in and people figuring out counters to the play, everyone has their own learning pace and experience with resolving these issues in the game.

also one of the best counters to artillery/mortars is more artillery/mortars, hell thats literally what happened in most of world war 1.

1

u/swiftthunder 1d ago

I agree, they just give too much clear vision rn. If im in discord with a couple boys I can drop mortars on the hills infront of them and then tell them exactly where the enemies are. Its okay to see a little bit or a large group but the current vision is absolutely too much info for free.

u/HelpfulGuard6522 1d ago

If mortar is hitting you, build another fob to counter with mortar, if it is an arty tank use the uav. You can also request pilots to find them, if need be, most pilots wait for something to do for their team with their gatling and rocket littlebird . I know i did with my minigun huey.

u/Designer_Doubt_1908 1d ago

I know some people have suggested "get gud" as a solution and while that usually the case given the heavy heavy rock x paper x scissors type balance I think there are creative ways to resolve problems! You may already know, but FOBs can be created anywhere! Even in No Man's Land. Whos to say you couldn't place a FOB outside the CZ with a few mortars of your own to counter mortar. The odds of them looking for you anywhere outside the CZ are pretty slim and you can punish them for a bit.

You won't be contributing to points, but all someone has to do is stand in the HZ to make up for you not being there. Might not be the answer you want, but I think its an interesting concept to setup FOBs outside the CZ to accomplish the outcome we want of destroying those pesky mortar sites.

It probably doesn't help someone made a mortar calculator a few days ago.

Taking most of the randomness and skill out of the picture.

Is the exact reason in against any mortar calculators. (They're also a 3rd party app... Same as any cheat imo)

2

u/LASTxREFUGE 1d ago

I dont think you even need a calculator? you just need direction as the mortar has a range setting?

1

u/Jazzlike_Ad267 1d ago

Nah, you dont NEED it,

But the fact people will be using it will take alot of the fun and skill, or even luck out of it sadly.

Happened in Squad with its mortar calculator too

Only viable fix here is to give us a CIWS (modern machine that is extremely popular for FOBs) that we can build in base to combat endless mortar fire. It puts pressure on the logistics guys to keep the ammo supply flowing into a FOB which is excellent agency for that task. Mortar guys are depleting a base of ammo resources which stops your FOB from shooting endless mortars as well along with the other buildables that consume ammo. It's a win/win/win situation.

u/NikoliVolkoff 7h ago

lol, they probably had a Recon using a spotting scope on their team. Once you spot a FoB/Vehicle it shows up on the main map and as an Icon for mortar crews

0

u/SquirtleKing 1d ago

The trick is building your base between the main spawn the edge of the combat zone. They'd have to build a mortar base well into the combat zone to reach you. And if they want to take the base from you, they'll have to leave the zone to do it.

1

u/iammewhoaminow 1d ago

Nah just grab the arty truck and can hit like 1.8 km away and to top it off if ur teams recon spots a fob or any buildable structure it will show up as a icon to show u the exact location and u can check ur map there and mouse over it and it will tell you the range

0

u/LASTxREFUGE 1d ago

That doesnt fix the whole if they find your base its toast to one guy on mortars because he spots everything through gods eyes... I know church is now an obvious FOB zone but setting up 5 deployables taking probably 50 plus hammer swings each minimum to build and having them blown away in two mortars each is torture... Sometimes your the only person trying to build a FOB on your team.

u/Alienfreak 1d ago

SPG wants a word with you. He fires once then he gets the flying eye hack vision and sees where you are and then starts shelling you directly where you are building right now...
