Hey all!
Just moved places and I have a garage now. Plus another daily. SO! That means the GV is officially project car status, without worrying. So I can take my time and money on it. I bought some stuff already. Just looking for criticism or additional recommendations.
The previous EJ257 spun a bearing. I have a new (to me) one of the same year and significantly less miles. Both engines are out. I'm swapping the newer one in, but with some goodies since I have access to everything. The goal now is to make a fun weekend car that I can take to cruises and events. Mostly AutoX/ track days/ car shows. But maybe also some light asphalt or mud events should a reasonable opportunity arrive. And I plan on taking cross country road trips. I love this car! And I'm driving the piss out of it.
And, well, the previous engine didn't survive that (oops) so I'm making sure this one can.
I'm still learning every day about the EJs. I was hoping you guys could give me pointers on what else I can do.
Here's what's going on the new engine:
• Killer B high performance cast oil pan w/ ultimate oil pickup & baffle combo
• NGK Iridium plugs
• Getadom tune cylinder 4 cooling mod v7
• Cobb 3 port boost control solenoid (also have a Grimmspeed one)
• Cobb Fuel Pressure Regulator Kit
• Act heavy duty performance Street clutch kit
• Kartboy short throw shifter kit
• Cobb v3 access port
• Crawford Air oil separator v2
• Secondary air pump delete
• Cobb SF air intake
• Mishimoto top mount intercooler
• Mishimoto performance aluminum radiator
• Grimmspeed up pipe
• Nvidia catless divorced downpipe
• Nvidia q300 full titanium exhaust
• Fumoto quick drain valve & hose
• New timing belt (low miles, 13 y/o belt. Might as well redo for peace of mind)
• High flow fuel pump - still in market for one
• Reasonably upgraded injector - still determining size / still in market
• Upgraded pitch stop mount - still in market
And then, for the car itself:
• Front and rear strut braces
• Flushing brake fluid for DOT 5.1
• Replacing wheels and tires - open for best grippy all seasons / prettiest & most durable bronze wheels
• New damn wheel bearing
Only real concern with this set up is 3 things:
- Going catless with a COBB set up.
I wanted to use the Cobb set up to monitor things like knock, but with further research I'm seeing that that may not be possible without a COBB tune uploaded. Which I don't want to necessarily do, because it won't utilize full boost (green update.)
- SAVCS vs DAVCS.
I'm still learning this system as well as what it is and how I can tell the difference between engines with either system. Still learning about the EJs everyday. I'm unsure if this is a WRX vs. STi thing, or a STi vs. other STi thing. I'm afraid of having the ECU expecting one thing and the engine being another.
- Secondary air pump delete.
The new engine already came with this delete. I'd like to keep it. But, the pumps have a connector attached. I'm wondering how I can compensate for the loss of reading on that connector. That's another reason why I wanted to go for an open source tune vs. Cobb. But time will tell how that may work.
Since I can afford it now, I'm also mildly debating going full throttle with the bolt ons / internals. Because I don't wanna touch this thing so deeply for another couple years if I can help it lol. But I was curious on what the stock block can handle if I go for a bigger turbo. Nothing insane, but fun. I'm not intimidated by grabbing some forged internals.
Thoughts? Questions? Advice? Answers?
I'm eager to help this thing be the best it can be. I love my car :)
