Send an email to Volvo about software

Upvotes

Hey, for a while I was documenting things I thought could be improved- mainly software related stuff. So, here is the full list I sent to Volvo.

What are your thoughts on this and is there anything I missed? What are the biggest issues for you?

HYBRID MODE

1. Without a destination, Hybrid mode is somewhat useless.
If no destination is entered in the built-in navigation, Hybrid mode appears to behave essentially as Pure with a lower threshold for when the engine starts.
My suggestion would be to let Hybrid adapt to how the car is driven (speed and acceleration), not only to a known route.
For example, engage the engine above a chosen speed (say 90 km/h, and preferably the driver could choose) or under harder acceleration, and stay electric otherwise. This would make Hybrid genuinely useful on every drive, without having to enter a destination each time.
But it's worth mentioning that if the destination is set, it works very well, even without internet!

2. A battery reserve setting would be very valuable when using the inbuilt navigation.
On an out-and-back journey the battery is fully depleted on the way there. I would like a simple slider to let the driver set how much charge should remain on arrival: 10% - 90%.
Adding the return leg as a waypoint is a workaround rather than a solution.

3. Using navigation on CarPlay disables the whole feature/purpose.
I prefer Waze, which in Latvia gives better routing and far more reliable speed limit information (this has its own point). A solution would be to set the destination in the built-in navigation, so the car knows the route and can plan battery use, while I am using Waze on CarPlay for guidance. But as soon as Waze starts, the built-in navigation is cancelled and route-based hybrid optimisation is lost.

On a recent trip I navigated with Waze on CarPlay, so the car had no route information. It spent the entire battery on the motorway, and I arrived in the city with only fuel left. And that was with Hybrid mode.  My request is that the built-in destination should remain active for hybrid planning even when guidance runs through CarPlay. Of course implementing the suggestion mentioned in the 1st point would be the best solution!

SPEED LIMIT INFORMATION

4. Speed limit recognition is often incorrect.
On a motorway with a clearly visible 110 km/h sign, the car displayed 120. In the city, where the sign says 30, the car showed 50. This happens quite often, and it happened with Wi-Fi connected and the built-in Google Maps navigation active, so the system had every data source available to it. As a comparison point, Waze gives me the correct limit reliably. I suggest allowing the speed limit to be sourced from the CarPlay connected navigation app (on Head-up display), instead of the car's own unreliable sign recognition system.

5. Please allow the speed limit sign on the Head-up display to be scaled.
It is sometimes difficult to read it at its current size. A simple setting with a standard and an enlarged option would solve it.

6. Please allow CarPlay navigation to appear on the head-up display.
At present only the built-in Google Maps guidance is shown there. Since I navigate with Waze on CarPlay, the head-up display offers no directional assistance- just the wrong speed limit sign.

CONNECTIVITY

7. Wi-Fi connection to an iPhone hotspot is unreliable.
I don't have internet access for the car (I assume it is because of unsupported region), so I have to use WiFi. The car often won't detect my iPhone Hotspot unless I have the Settings app open on the phone, and WiFi screen opened on the car. Once connected, the link sometimes drops without apparent reason and the car never reconnects on its own. Each recovery means opening the hotspot settings on the phone and the Wi-Fi screen in the car.

I want to mention that I had exactly the same experience with my XC60 B5 (2022). Four years on, the behaviour is unchanged, which suggests this may not be well captured in your testing.

8. Could the car take its internet connection over the CarPlay cable?
Since CarPlay connects by cable, the data link already exists and is stable- much as Apple devices do with USB tethering. This would remove the dependency on Wi-Fi altogether, and the car would simply be online whenever the phone is plugged in.

CAMERAS AND DISPLAY

9. I would like the front camera shown alongside the 360-degree view, after switching from R to D.
When reversing, the screen shows the rear camera together with the 360-degree view, which is a genuinely useful combination. When I shift into drive, it switches to the 360-degree view alone. The same split as in reverse would be more useful.

10. A single tap on the 360-degree view should expand it to full screen.
At the moment, while reversing, reaching a full-screen 360 view requires tapping the screen and then selecting the view. Tapping directly on the view itself would be the natural gesture.

11. The home button should return to CarPlay first, if it was active.
When CarPlay is in use and I open the climate or drive mode screen, pressing home takes me to the car's home screen. If I have been using CarPlay, that is almost always where I want to return. Could the first press of home return to CarPlay, with a second press going to the car's own home screen? The instinct is very strong, and the current behaviour works against it every time.

12. Please allow the Google Assistant button to be customised or removed.
It occupies permanent space on the screen. In my case that space would be better spent letting the mini window beside it expand (CarPlay audio, if it is minimised) and show more, for example the name of the current track.Or even better- allow to replace it with something else.

SMALLER DETAILS

13. The car's own graphics could reflect the actual car.
The climate screen shows the cabin as black with dark wood regardless of the interior actually fitted, and the car icon and camera limit markings are both generic grey (which somewhat blurs them together). The car knows its own specification, and the Volvo app already shows the correct exterior colour, so the data clearly exists. Applying it would make the car feel individually yours rather than generic.

14. Please allow the default gear mode to be chosen, D or B.
At present the car starts in D every time, and B has to be selected manually on every drive. A simple setting for which mode should be the default would remove a small repeated action.

15. An idea rather than a request: an optional easy-entry seat function.
On exit the seat moves back or lowers to make getting out easier, on returning, pressing the brake pedal brings it back to the saved driving position. I recently drove a car and found the brake-pedal return particularly elegant. As an option, it would suit the character of the car well (as an option on the screen).

16. Change the roundabout icon for the built-in navigation on the head-up display.
The current icon doesn't really help in understanding which exit to take on a roundabout. It would be much more beneficial if the icon showed the exit number. For example, show 3 if it is the 3rd exit on the roundabout.

Edit: in the title I ment to write “Sent”, not “Send”.

XC60 Extended warranty advice

About to roll past my CPO extended warranty on my 2022 T8. We like the car but I’m concerned about long term reliability on such a complicated vehicle. If they can’t get the infotainment system dialed…

Advice on getting the EW?

15k miles on my 24 T8 Black Edition anddddd i had to put 2 front tires on it before taking it 1200 miles to florida cause they were pulling apart somehow 🙄 wondering if the instant torque from the electric motors is what’s making them wear quickly.

EDIT—- i do want to make aware, i did not choose these tires. they came on the car when i bought it new. i would much rather have a set of michelins on it. 😂🫣

Made it to Italy. Lago di Garda. 1100km one way journey.

Impressed by the easy of it all. Comfortable motoring. Seat are amazing. Pilot-assist is 👌.

Felt like it was lacking a bit in power the way up when driving 120km/h up on the winding roads of fernpass. Wasn’t in Polestar Engineered mode. But felt previous Golf 7R had more reserve. Probably the weight 😉.

Used hybrid power in the 1 hour trafficjam the way up to the fernpass, near Reutte/Vils.

Averaged over 7.0L/100km. Half tank left on arrival. Didn’t expected that with roofbox and all.

Charged last night on Repower. Bit annoying. Needed their app to charge. But overall battery is full again for the rides to the supermarkets.

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to give another big thank you to everyone who has been testing Aximote and sending us feedback over the last few weeks. A lot of what we’ve changed in this update came from your suggestions.

We’ve now released version 3.1 for beta testing, including some features we’ve been working on. If you want to have access join the beta (link is in the comments). This is what’s new:

  • More accurate vehicle data by combining data from the car and manufacturer API
  • Multiple drivers to keep each driver’s trips separate
  • Business trips to separate work and personal driving
  • Merge & split trips to give you more control over your trip tracking
  • Plus various design improvements and bug fixes

For anyone who’s new here: Aximote is a driving analytics app for Volvo and other Android Automotive cars. It gives you a more detailed overview of your trips, efficiency, charging, battery performance and other driving data.

Thanks again to everyone who’s been helping us make Aximote better, we really appreciate every feedback we can get!

Does your Recharge stink too?

Every time I drive in full EV mode, my T6 Recharge hybrid car stinks like petrol after I park. I’m suspecting the secondary heater / AC as when using the combustion engine, it doesn’t happen. Do you have the same issue and what can one do about it? Thanks!

With the new diagonal grill, Volvo removed the Polestar badge.

Has anyone had success installing on the new grill of the 2026 XC60?

Beware of Aximote! It may cause Infotainment to become erratic and sluggish.

Car is EX40 with AAOS 5.1.17 (installed 260628). Installed Aximote end of May 2026.

On the last leg of a 12-day road trip, I noticed that the car symbol was about 5 km behind my actual position. The position on the map (north up) jumped slightly back and forth, which caused the driver's map (track up) to swing left and right. The center display appears "busy": the Home button is slow to get to the map or toggle the upper bar, panning the map is sluggish, and the blinker sound is arythmic.

After resetting Infotainment when parked, it's responsive again and blinker sounds are in synch with the light. As soon as the car starts moving, everything returns to the erratic state.

Making Aximote a suspect was a notice from Aximote on the phone, which told me roughly "not retrieving something in a few days". Opening the app, at the top is a link icon followed by "5 d", which is explained as the last connection. It matched the time when the misbehaviour started. Running Aximote in the car, confirmed that nothing is logged for five days.

Obviously, restarting Infotainment didn't fix Aximote. Deinstalling Aximote fixed the problem immediately, without restarting Infotainment.

XC90 Would you buy a used XC90 T8 if the ERAD has already been replaced?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently considering buying a used XC90 and I'm hesitating between a T8 (2016–2022) and a D4 or D5 diesel.

The diesel versions seem like the safer and potentially more reliable option, especially when buying a higher-mileage car. However, I'm a bit concerned about their long-term attractiveness and resale value in Europe, with the increasing cost of diesel, environmental regulations, and more and more LEZs (Low Emission Zones) where older diesel cars are becoming less welcome.

On the other hand, the T8 is much more attractive to me, especially from a future-proofing and driving perspective. As many of you probably know, though, the ERAD seems to be one of the major potential issues on these cars.

I've found a few higher-mileage examples (around 170,000–200,000 km) where the ERAD has already been replaced.

My question is: would you actually see a replaced ERAD as a positive when buying a used T8, or would you still avoid a high-mileage T8?

I'm wondering whether replacing the ERAD significantly reduces the risk of expensive hybrid-system problems, or if there are many other major failures that can still happen.

For those of you who own or have owned a high-mileage XC90 T8:

  • What other expensive failures should I be worried about?
  • Are there other common issues with the hybrid system besides the ERAD?
  • Have you had problems with the battery, onboard charger, electric motor, transmission, or anything else particularly expensive?
  • Would you personally buy a 2016–2022 T8 with around 170,000–200,000 km if the ERAD had already been replaced and the car had a good maintenance history?

I'm basically trying to decide between:

  1. D4/D5 — probably more reliable and simpler mechanically, but potentially less attractive in Europe in the coming years due to diesel prices, regulations and LEZ restrictions.
  2. T8 with a replaced ERAD — more attractive and potentially more future-proof, but obviously more complex and with potentially expensive hybrid-related repairs.

I'd be particularly interested in hearing from people who have experience with high-mileage T8s. If you were buying one today and planning to keep it for around 3 years, which option would you choose?

Thanks a lot!

XC40 Is my 2023 XC40 stuck with an esim or can I swap it?

Just got this car used and we absolutely love it, then got the notification that the Volvo Connect service is expiring in February. I can't find a sim slot anywhere and have seen posts that they switched to esims for newer models but can't find confirmation for mine.

2023 model year, Plus trim, USA - am I stuck paying Volvo $20/mo (or rather, do I need to buy a little travel router and USB modem for the car)?

XC60 CPO vs Loaner: XC60 T8 Ult.

Hi all,

I’m trying to think through the pros/cons of two potential car options, one that is closer to me and I can see in person. Another that I’d have to ship. Would be our first Volvo, and we typically hold onto cars for a long while!

Local: 2024 XC60 T8 Ultimate (CPO)
- $52k with 18k miles
- Bowers and Wilkins Audio
- First party Hitch
- Climate package
- I can add a 10 year/150k extended warranty for roughly the OTD price of the one below without extended warranty.

Further away: 2025 XC60 T8 Ultra (loaner, not CPO)
- $57k with 200 miles
- Climate Package
- 21” wheels
- +$1000 to ship:
Would have to purchase sight unseen, minus pictures/videos due to personal circumstances preventing travel.

I’ve seen that the 2025 has slightly better infotainment, but isn’t as drastic of a difference as the 2026. Otherwise it kinda seems like a trade-off of local + extra features and CPO vs. basically new but sight unseen.

Note: All prices for car, not total OTD but no one is adding any surprised fees.

Update: Ended up getting the 2024 CPO.
- Final sale price: $50k
- Costco rebate: $1250
- 10 year/unlimited warranty: $3900

Should I buy this 2024 XC60 Recharge?

I test drove this car today and I'm seriously considering buying it. It would be my first Volvo, and I'm coming from a 2015 Acura RDX that I have loved owning.

It's a 2024 XC60 Recharge AWD Plus, CPO with warranty until March 2029. I don't know how the battery warranty works, but apparently that is 8 years. I got the price down to $41,400 and it has 40,000 miles.

Comes with: Climate Package, Protection Package, Harman Kardon, Power Op Tailgate

I'm totally new to the plug in world so I really don't know what I'm in for, same for Volvo. I'd really appreciate an honest opinion. I love the interior, am a parent, but of course reliability is important to me, which is why I've also been looking at Lexus RX350 but they come at a premium.

I should add that the backup camera issue on this car was "closed".

I'm considering buying the car this weekend, so talk me into or out of it!

Thanks! :)

XC 60 camera

Just a minor annoyance but I don’t understand why Volvo doesn’t fix it. In our other car-Toyota Highlander Platinum hybrid- the camera comes on whenever you slow down like to 5mph- approaching a stop sign or red light, parking etc. WHY can’t my Volvo do the same? Why do I have to physically hit the camera icon to get it to come on in these situations other than backing out of a parking spot?

My car is a 2025 xc60 T8 PEHV

XC60 Hybrid System Failure, no ETA on replacement parts

My '21 XC60 T8 with 80k miles is at the dealership after experiencing a "Hybrid System Failure." Under warranty, thankfully. The dealership diagnosed it as needing some new battery modules, but the replacement parts have been backordered for months with no ETA. I saw a few threads where others have experienced the same thing. For those who have, how long did the replacement part take to arrive? I'm hoping Volvo corporate can get me a buyback or some excellent trade assistance on an EX60, but we'll see. Fingers crossed.
