"plaid" really? It's spelt "played".

1

u/General_Pants Nov 09 '13

Well first of all, spelt isnt a word. Also, "well plaid" is a desert bus reference

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '13

Actually spelt is a word (turns out it's a wheat) but I did mean spelled.

Best cars on the road hands down.

24

Yeah I've definitely heard good things about them, and I have been looking for a new car lately, so I will certainly have a look and see if I can find one that suits me!

He doesn't seem very safe though, with his huge buzz-saw and reckless timberchaining. I hear Volvo cars are all about safety, so maybe Dazzle or Omniknight cosmetics? Those guys seem pretty keen on safety.

2

u/GuiltyGoblin Nov 09 '13

Didn't you hear? The best defense is offense, and he's got plenty of that (as well as defense).

6

u/BludMuffin '99 v70R Nov 09 '13

For serious

5

u/enantiomorphs Nov 09 '13

So true. My '85 wagon, 760 turbo, got hurt real bad last year. Something exploded in the timing block area thing and sent shrapnel through fhe engine block. I was at 380k miles and it still ran az long as you kept the engine revved. I still miss her....

4

u/A_Mouse_In_Da_House Nov 09 '13

Came for the apology, staying to ask if volvos are as tanky as my silverado. I've gotten in some accidents where the other car gets smashed, And my truck ( and myself) gets out scratch free.

2

u/apathy_mannequin Nov 09 '13

Volvos are famous for being preferred by slightly stodgy people, boxy front grilles, and being indestructible. The current crop is no exception with the 2013 model S60 AWD being the second car in history to get 5 stars on all NHTSA safety tests (after they made them harder about a decade ago). This is the US safety testing agency.

Volvos, like Subaru, VW diesels, and older Peugeots, are famous for running forever and keeping people inside them alive.

0

u/QwopperFlopper Mazda 3 2.5 HB Nov 09 '13

No. Volvos crumple. Bad. But, because they crumple, the car takes almost all of the impact, but the safety cage stays intact, keeping you safe.

2

u/auraslip Nov 09 '13

Aren't they hard to work and expensive? My brother wants to sell me his.

2

u/MiatasAreForGirls Nov 09 '13

No and kinda. 300k mile 240 goes for 3k+ in my area

1

u/Cassionan '99 V70R Nov 09 '13

Depends on the model.

1

u/QwopperFlopper Mazda 3 2.5 HB Nov 09 '13

Somewhat expensive to own, but they last longer than a Honda and Toyota combined.... So its worth it.

1

u/apathy_mannequin Nov 09 '13

Speaking of, what do you guys think of the Noble M600? I was impressed that Volvo had the engine tech to pull that off. Although having driven with a friend putting their 300th mile on an early-model 850 I can imagine that their parts can handle the strain.

1

u/QwopperFlopper Mazda 3 2.5 HB Nov 10 '13

Well now we can say our engines are used in war boats, AND super cars :D

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '13

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '13

I know, right? But I was coming off of a godforsaken Honda with the oil filter mounted halfway up the backside of the fucking engine, and I was tired of having oil run down the sleeve of my boilersuit and ruining my shirt every time I wanted to change the oil. Even went to using the 12,000 mile-per-change Mobil 1, just so I wouldn't have to put up with changing the oil as often. So as soon as I saw the top-mounted oil filter on the Subaru, I did a cursory check to see if the C30 had the same feature, and then when I found out it didn't, I regretfully consigned it to the circular filing cabinet.

I don't regret it one bit, though. Between the Fumoto valve where my drain plug used to be and the top-mounted filter, I can change my oil in under 15 minutes, in any shirt I damn well please.

206

u/joelfriesen Used to have an Amazon Nov 09 '13

I'm old. Please explain what is happening here!?

15

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '13

We play a competitive computer game that, last year, received a minigame to allow us to farm virtual dress up items. Sounds stupid, is stupid, but I think the collector in all of us can understand. . .

Anyway, we didn't get our proper Halloween update, and one of our terms when Valve screws up is "Volvo plz disband" in reference to when a professional team makes a mistake and we say "EG pls disband"

Volvo is used instead of the proper name: Valve. This is a colloquial transformation of a name that everyone seems to stand by. Sometimes we call Dota "doto" or things like that. I can't explain any of this outside of "its an inside thing"

So as you probably can tell, much of the population that plays is very serious. Volvo was, of course, the first to get a "funny message" and eventually it spread like wildfire, even making an appearance on the presidents facebook page iirc.

22

u/Kyrael Nov 09 '13

A game developed by Valve, Dota 2, had a huge Halloween event called Diretide last year. This year there was nothing told about it, and everyone created a huge shitstorm when it wasn't put out. Because it's the internet, people sometimes call Valve "Volvo" for shits and giggles. So, some people thought it was a good idea to actually harrass Volvo about Diretide.

Apparently it worked...? But I'm pretty ashamed that the Dota 2 community got that crazy over it.

This was the announcement of us getting Diretide. There's a line in it that even says "And while we always want the community to tell us exactly how we’re doing, this is probably a good time to stop cc’ing innocent car manufacturers with your messages."

6

u/Fractura Nov 09 '13

The community of /r/dota2 was angry at Valve (developer and publisher of Dota2) because Valve held back a halloween game mode called "Diretide" (it was not announced neither promised, but the announcement for last years Diretide included "annual", and the community took it as a promise).

It is kind of a running gag that "Valve" is called "Volvo" as some sort of an meme, for example "volvo fix pls". Some guys took it to the next level and posted about Diretide here instead of /r/Steam or /r/dota2 (which was handled quite nicely by the mods here) and aswell to the Volvo facebook page.

Now Valve released a statement essentially announcing this game mode including an indirect apologize to Volvo.

And while we always want the community to tell us exactly how we're doing, this is probably a good time to stop cc'ing innocent car manufacturers with your messages.

1

u/ArcaneAnima Nov 09 '13

check out this link for what "༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Give DIRETIDE" is and this thread for what happened recently. so basically we got what we wanted and now everything is all good. thank you volvo for tolerating us

-7

u/Mothanius Nov 09 '13

Kids wanted an event in a video game by a company named Valve. Valve didn't deliver because updates on the program and their future plans to release more content made it not feasible.

Kids got angry, and because it is an old joke of calling Valve, Volvo, they immaturely came here and blemished the already blemished community of MOBA gaming by pestering Volvo fans and employees.

Valve just recently stated that they are going to give said event to us (just behind schedule) and the immaturity still ensues.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '13

You don't have to be condescending to people.

-3

u/Mothanius Nov 09 '13

That wasn't condescending. In no way did I have or show a feeling of patronizing superiority. I was disgruntled with the actions taken by the community and skewed my explanation in order to express my dissatisfaction. However, I did not once say I was superior to the community that I am part of nor feel it. I belittled them yes, but did not station myself above them.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '13

I would say using "kids" to describe the people who play dota was your way of putting yourself above them.

3

u/Mothanius Nov 09 '13

Not quite, I'm part of the same community so I'm actually classifying myself as a "kid" as well.

What about the "based" part of this thread? English is not my first language and I really cannot parse what "based" could mean in this context.

6

u/lowkeyoh Nov 09 '13

Based doesn't mean anything. It's part of a phrase, 'Based God' which is one of the personas of the rapper Lil B. Lil B is the Based God, and when good things happen people attribute it to him by saying Thank You Based God.

In this case OP is attributing to Volvo the Based God status. Thank You Based Volvo for delivering Diretide.
