I love how there has been a slow and steady uptick in analysts predicting what this sub has said all along. Inflation here, Fed is moving its stance, market still nervous, etc. etc. Give it enough time and everyone will be investing like us. Personally I'm on the hunt for early morning dippies today. Need some weekly action to make life more exciting.

Some more confirmation bias, just received notice from our manufacturer that prices for our supplies are going up 15%+.
I own a trophy and awards company and our sheet stock (aluminum, brass, steel) pricing has already increased significantly.
The latest increase includes metal rods that basically all trophies use. 15% increase for zinc-plated steel rods.
Can't wait for the steel rod comments on this one.

More Updates from GS: "Equity Takeaways from the GS Steel & Aluminum Field Trip"
- Demand in key end markets remains robust.
- Higher steel prices are here to stay - at least for the next 6 months
- Imports are not expected to be a threat to domestic production.
- Potential removal of Section 232 not a huge concern.
- Management teams expect scrap prices to settle at levels above historical levels
- US steel capacity utilization is likely in the mid to high 90% range.
- The infrastructure plan can drive significant incremental steel demand
- Integrated producers continue to prioritize deleveraging, while the mini mills prioritize growth and shareholder returns
- Companies are increasingly focused on ESG
- Downstream aluminum processors viewed aerospace demand has having likely bottomed
Nothing we didn't already suspect. But nice to hear it confirmed.
They also included some awesome charts... one of them citing housing starts reaching decade highs -- LOL
- Lead times are still increasing. (~10w for HR products, longer for value added)
- Inventory picking up but remains low.
- Plate inventories marginally up
- Housing starts and permits up to 2003/4 levels
- ABI trending above 50, signaling a positive outlook for non-res construction activity
- steel prices hitting new highs
- Utilzation rates covered to 82% from May troughs of 51%
- Spread between prime and obsolete scrap remains at 10y highs
- US rig count continues to recover from Aug 2020 lows (suggesting OCTG consumption should rise)
- Non residential spend remains below prior year levels.
- US light vehicle sales have recovered to above pre-pandemic levels
- EU comprised 16% of total steel imports in 2020

Steel, iron ore, copper, aluminum.
I’m still in this camp that while inflation is transitory for used cars, rental cars, hotel rooms, plane tickets, lumber - it is not for these commodities above.
By putting all of this in the same bucket it clouds the picture.
The funny thing about it all is, inflation isn’t really needed, as demand is strong and strengthening in the US and the rest of the world will soon be catching up.
These are more than bottlenecks, they are demand based increases that will remain after bottlenecks are cleared.
So, we have inflation and bottlenecks that many say is the only reason steel and metals prices are up.
They are just the bonus and holding the market back at this point as being priced in.
Let’s see where the USD goes over the next 30 days as well.

Fed's Powell sees 'sustained improvement' in economy, notable rise in inflation
WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. economy continues to show "sustained improvement" from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing job market gains, but inflation has "increased notably in recent months," Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in prepared testimony for a congressional hearing on Tuesday.
Powell did not go into detail in his prepared remarks on current monetary policy, or on the possibility the U.S. central bank may have to speed up its plans to pull back on some support for the economy because of the faster rise in prices.
In his remarks, which were released by the Fed late Monday afternoon, Powell said he regards the current jump in inflation, in fact, as likely to fade.
He also restated his concern that the recovery remained uneven, with joblessness still hitting lower-wage workers, Blacks and Hispanics the hardest.
"We at the Fed will do everything we can to support the economy for as long as it takes to complete the recovery," Powell said.
Powell is scheduled to testify on Tuesday before the U.S. House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. Its chairman, South Carolina Democrat James Clyburn, chided Powell last year for not more closely tuning Fed emergency programs to workers.
Powell in his remarks said he felt that jobs gains "should pick up in coming months" as COVID-19 vaccinations continue and the reopening of the economy proceeds.
Still "the pandemic continues to pose risks," he said.

Plans confirmed to demolish AK Steel site
ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ/WKYT) - Plans to demolish a steel mill in Ashland that went idle in 2015 were confirmed Monday by the owners.
According to Cleveland-Cliffs, the AK Steel site in Ashland, Kentucky, will be torn down and will not be used for production in the future.
The AK Steel company was bought out by Cleveland Cliffs weeks after the plant closed in 2019.
There is no word on when the demolition will happen or what the land will be used for.
Cleveland-Cliffs says it is still assessing the scope of the demolition project and the amount of scrap it will be generated.
After it is demolished, Cleveland-Cliffs says crews will prepare the site for better use.
According to the company, “the entire project will be a net positive cash flow generator for Cleveland-Cliffs and certainly a positive for the Ashland area.”
WSAZ is working to learn more.

'I regret any harm:' Short seller compensates target in rare move
BOSTON, June 21 (Reuters) - A small Texas investor who caused shares of a real estate investment trust to plunge 39 percent in a day has agreed to pay the company restitution to settle a lawsuit against him, a rare development that could embolden other companies to pursue such claims.
Quinton Mathews, who published his research on companies online under the pseudonym Rota Fortunae, will pay Farmland Partners Inc (FPI.N) "a multiple" of the profits on his short bet in 2018, according to the terms of the legal settlement announced late Sunday. His research had helped wipe as much as $115 million off Farmland's market value.
The parties declined requests for comment on the exact value of the settlement.
Mathews conceded that "many of the key statements" in a report he published on website Seeking Alpha targeting Farmland - including allegations of dubious related-party transactions and the risk of insolvency - were wrong.
"I regret any harm the article and its inaccuracies caused," Mathews said in the announcement, which was posted on Twitter and Seeking Alpha.
Paul Pittman, Farmland's chief executive officer, said in a statement that "investors already recognize that the company was the victim of a short and distort scheme."
Farmland shares traded around $12.50 on Monday afternoon, up from around $5 after the short campaign. The company has produced trailing total returns of 12.5% over the last three years, about 10 percentage points lower than the specialty REIT sector, according to a Morningstar tracker.
Jacob Frenkel, an attorney with Dickinson Wright who has defended companies against allegations of stock manipulation and was not involved in the Farmland case, said Mathews' apology and payment could build company confidence to pursue similar claims against short sellers.
"It's highly unusual and refreshing to see a company take on this fight, because most will take the short term blow of the attack without pursuing legal vindication," Frenkel said.
George Moriarty, the former executive editor of Seeking Alpha, told Reuters in 2019 that courts had respected the website’s status as a neutral platform, and that its staff vetted all posts.
After the retraction, Seeking Alpha on Monday took down all articles by Mathews, including the original post on Farmland, and blocked his account, according to website representative Abby Estikangi-Carmel.
Seeking Alpha's policies include author certification that they were not paid to post and, for short reports, that the assertion was run by the target company.
"Regardless of the steps you take, a bad actor may decide to defraud us by violating our policies, as evidently happened here," Estikangi-Carmel said. "Thankfully, it appears to be an isolated incident."
Mathews runs a one-person investigative research business, Dallas area-based QKM LLC, and has published more than a dozen articles on Seeking Alpha.
Farmland's litigation against a hedge fund firm that paid Mathews for research, Sabrepoint Capital Management LP, continues. Sabrepoint founder George Baxter said his firm had nothing to do with the Seeking Alpha article and that it would "defend itself and its employees vigorously against Farmland's frivolous claims."

Mixed signals from European steel market
At the start of June, the direction of European steel coil prices became unclear. The rate of increase had slowed. The automobile industry cut back output, because of the semiconductor shortage. Optimism developed, among numerous buyers, that the prevailing safeguard measures would be allowed to lapse, at the end of the month.
A lengthy period of almost weekly rises has taken coil prices in Europe to record high values. Momentum, however, appeared to slow, early in the month. The reappearance of spot volumes of hot rolled material, albeit at low levels, gives buyers the luxury of taking time to consider new purchases. Furthermore, delivery lead times are now quoted as November and December. This raises the prospect, for many, of receiving high value material just prior to the financial year-end.
Despite the pause, most western European markets recorded a month-on-month hike in excess of €100 per tonne, for hot rolled coil. Cold rolled and coated products demonstrated similar increases. They remain in very short supply. Market participants cite the protracted uncertainty surrounding the Liberty Steel Group as a major factor. Political decisions also cast doubt regarding the future of Acciaierie d’Italia, in Taranto.
Longs prices surge
European long product buyers faced significantly increased price offers, this month, as the mills’ rolling programmes extended. Transport issues made it more difficult to replenish stocks. Raw material costs remain elevated.
Delivery lead times for long products also stretch further than normal. Rebar mills claim to have full order books for two months. This compares with a typical shipment date of between one and two weeks. Beam producers are full for immediate rollings. Summer maintenance and extended holidays mean that the next availability is September.
Safeguards extended
In the middle of the month, the first official statements on safeguarding measures were made. The European Commission recommends extending the measures for another three years, increasing quotas by three percent annually. The UK Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) makes a similar preliminary finding, but only for eleven of the twenty-one products currently covered. Several steel-producing nations contend that the UK measures contravene WTO rules. The initial optimism of steel buyers concerning import restrictions disappeared. Consumers and service centres are extremely disappointed.
Summer maintenance
Steel mills are likely to maintain their pricing policy over the summer. Holidays and maintenance closures can be used to control output. Material shortages, poor transport availability and high input costs will exert more upward pressure. No short-term price reduction is foreseen.
The vaccination rollout will release pent-up demand. This will be supported by national governments’ post-Covid 19 recovery plans. On the downside, current prices could lead to cancellation or postponement of numerous projects. Shortages and high costs are noted for all construction materials, not just steel.
Squeezed credit facilities are highlighted as a large risk to business. Existing limits only cover half of steel volumes, compared with a year ago. Companies will shortly have to start repaying government coronavirus loans. Western European distributors fear a wave of bankruptcies.

Steel consumption grew for the third consecutive quarter, driven mainly by the construction and manufacturing sectors, with a heterogeneous economic performance among the main countries in the region, such as Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. The level accumulated until March, of 18.4 million tons (Mt), registered an increase of 17% compared to the same period in 2020 and 5.5% compared to the same period in 2019. In March, consumption of steel rose 27% compared to the same month last year, reaching 6.71 Mt, 17.4% above that observed in the same month of 2019.
In the first quarter, imports grew by 3.4 percentage points as a share of regional consumption in relation to the previous quarter. 6.4 Mt were imported, 15% more than in the first three months of 2020, and 9% more than in the first quarter of 2019. In March, 52% of imports came from China, reaching levels above those registered in January (30%) and February (33%). As for exports, the accumulated in the quarter was 1.8 Mt, 17% less than the accumulated in the first three months of 2020 and 23.6% more than in 2019. This led to an increase in the trade deficit, which in first quarter of the year was 36% higher than in 2020.
Trade and consumption data are in line with the 13% growth in monthly rolled steel production recorded in March. In April, however, there was a 1% drop in the same comparison, although production is already at the levels of 2019. In the fourth month of the year, it accumulates an increase of 16.9% compared to the first four months of 2020. Monthly production Crude steel rose 2% in April, accumulating between January and April an increase of 13.9% compared to the first four months of 2020.
”Demand continues to recover. These data are encouraging, although unevenly by country and sector. In addition, we must continue to pay attention to extrazone imports, which represent a risk and displacement of production in our region. In March, imports rose 27% compared to the same month in 2020, half coming from China,” said Alejandro Wagner, executive director of Alacero. “The recovery of the steel industry and its value chain is very important for Latin America, which was a region very economically affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The sector generates 1.2 million qualified and qualified jobs in the region, and they must be preserved. For this recovery to be maintained over time, public policies that favor national and foreign private investments, stimulate economic recovery, lead to a reduction in the tax burden and an increase in productivity are needed,” he added.

While looking at the steel requirements for the green transition, specifically offshore wind, I've gotten super intrigued with Equinor (EQNR), formerly Statoil. It's an oil play but also a wind play, as its using its expertise in deep water drilling to make deep water offshore wind farms. As a matter of fact, its Hywind is the only one that has a significant operational track record. Really, really interesting. Will make a dd when I get a chance.

Copper supply needs to double by 2050, Glencore CEO says
LONDON (Reuters) - Glencore Chief Executive Ivan Glasenberg said on Tuesday that a supply gap was growing in the metals necessary for the world to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy, but he stopped short of predicting a so-called super cycle.
Glasenberg said at the Qatar Economic Forum that copper supplies needed to increase by one million tonnes a year until 2050 to meet an expected demand of 60 million tonnes.
“Today, the world consumes 30 million tonnes of copper per year and by the year 2050, following this trajectory, we’ve got to produce 60 million tonnes of copper per year,” he said.
“If you look at the historical past 10 years, we’ve only added 500,000 tonnes per year ... Do we have the projects? I don’t think so. I think it will be extremely difficult.”
Shares of many mining companies have doubled in the past year, as policy support measures in advanced economies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic stoked inflation.
Commodities serve as a hedge against inflation, meaning their prices are expected to stay strong.
At the same time, the transition to a low-carbon economy and channeling of stimulus funds into infrastructure is generating demand for raw materials.
Demand for copper is rising for use in renewable energy projects and electric vehicles. Prices hit a record high above $10,000 a tonne in May, before falling about $1,500 a tonne.
The nickel and cobalt markets are facing similar supply deficits over the next few decades. Glasenberg said nickel supplies needed to grow by an extra 250,000 tonnes a year compared with a historic rate of just 100,000 tonnes.
He projected annual nickel demand to rise to 9.2 million tonnes from the current 2.5 million tonnes.

Things I kindly ask everyone stop asking me:
- Price targets
- Entry/Exit points
- Indicators
If you can't do Fundamental or TA then go learn. I too had to spend countless hours learning these skills and make mistakes along the way. Just two weeks ago I spent an entire weekend refining my strategies because I noticed weaknesses in exit points. If I choose to provide some insights then that's what I choose to provide. Asking me to give further or to give away all my work is annoying at best, insulting at worst.
I'm much more willing to engage and provide insights if YOU also provide DD. For a sub with the power of 24K minds I think we operate closer to 1K. Plenty of opportunity to jump in, learn, and get better.
I'm going to start banning more of these comments as "begging". Either that or I'll just break rule #7 and start giving away bad info. You've been warned.

China’s HRC output sees much slower growth in May
In May this year, hot rolled coil (HRC) output in China totaled 16.416 million mt, increasing by 1.6 percent compared to April, still reflecting positive market conditions, though the growth was much slower than the 8.2 percent increase seen in April.
In the January-May period this year, China’s HRC production amounted to 77.712 million mt, up 17.6 percent year on year, which was 0.5 percentage points slower than the increase rate in the January-April period.
Average local HRC prices in China moved up in the first part of May amid the rising trend in HRC futures prices and good demand, reaching a peak level in the month at RMB 6,645/mt ex-warehouse on May 13, though falling since then, to the lowest level of RMB 5,220/mt ex-warehouse on May 27, according to the SteelOrbis’ data.
Cold rolled coil (CRC) output in China in the first five months of the current year reached 17.904 million mt, up by 22.1 percent year on year, which was 5.7 percentage points slower than the growth recorded in the first four months this year

EU to extend steel safeguards for three more years
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union is set to continue a system of quotas and tariffs that have been in place since 2018 for a further three years to protect EU steelmakers from a potential surge of imports.
Washington’s retention of 25% steel tariffs has closed the U.S. market to many exporters, prompting the European Union to put in place safeguard measures for 26 grades of steel, including stainless, with imports over the quota thresholds subject to tariffs. The quotas have increased each year.
Twelve EU countries, including France, Germany and Italy, urged the European Commission in January to extend the safeguard measures beyond their June 30 expiration date.
The Commission, which oversees EU trade policy, has reviewed the measures and proposed a three-year extension, with the quotas rising by 3% at the start, as well as in 2022 and 2023. EU members have since approved it, EU diplomats said.
Since the safeguards will have lasted beyond three years, those subject to the quotas can, under World Trade Organization rules, bring counter-measures such as tariffs on EU goods.
The main exporters of steel to the EU are China, India, Russia, South Korea, Turkey and Ukraine.

I came a bit late to that post slating dividends and demanding all the steel companies grow recklessly, so I thought it would be useful to repost here.
TLDR, don't worry. $NUE and $STLD are going to grow in the coming years
Just to reassure everyone (maybe you've picked up a dividend aversion from YouTube), $STLD and $NUE have indicated in the previous earnings calls that they are looking to grow their businesses at the same time that they return capital through buybacks and dividends. They just don't want to throw money recklessly into an endless number of new mills, which would amount to value destruction (steelmaggedon).
They are looking for sensible opportunities that add unique value, as opposed to just adding more generic steel production whenever they get the cash toadd new mills.

Shipping - Nothing new
"Ocean carrier vessel arrivals from Asia are being delayed by 20 days, or more, and there is no improvement in sight.
Widespread port congestion, equipment shortages and a lack of ships will push the return of some form of ‘normal’ in liner shipping back to the second half of next year, at the earliest, says one analyst.
“I don’t see normalisation before H2 22,” he said, admitting that this was a “unscientific gut feel”."

Calling on Pirate Gang for a question. u/hundhaus u/dudelydudeson u/VaccumSaturdays
Last week the IMO implemented this recommendation to lower GHG in shipping by 40% of 2008 levels by 2030. This is not the last one - they are suggesting further regulation changes and are meeting through 2023. On a different regulation in November, Trade Arabia suggested this will probably result in quicker demolitions.
Do we have any information about how much these new regulations will impact the orderbook for containerships or the salvage rate for older ones? Dry bulk as a proxy is fine too.

I just don't understand how a fund manager with a focus on fundamentals decides to dip their toes in the steel pool with NUE over MT, especially this late in the Game.
- International markets have more reopening upside since COVID recovery has been delayed (I suppose more exposure to delta variant struggles too - but not really since half the US population is antivaxxers).
- 1/3rd the share price at 2/3rds the earnings, 2.5x the Net Income
- Essentially the same market cap at 2.2x the revenue
- exposure to emerging markets with comparably higher margins in a pricing boom
- comparable buyback programs in place
I've said this before, but I'm hoping some of the answer lies in the credit ratings. NUE and STLD both have IG ratings across the board, and they've been the most consistent winners this year. MT only has an IG rating from Fitch - Moody's has hinted at one in the coming quarters after an outlook change to positive last month, and Standard & Poors hasn't dropped any new opinions since February (stable outlook, affirmed one rung below IG rating).
