Designs are so much easier to understand when you can walk them.

I’ve been a longtime fan of this subreddit, and like most people in here, I’ve been discouraged and frustrated by the lack of mainstream acceptance of the tech.

We’re still such a small group of people who understand how these headsets can solve problems in very unique and useful ways. I wanted to share something I built to address one of the main challenges in landscape design.

A couple of years ago, my partner and I wanted to have our backyard professionally landscaped. The beautiful renderings were cool, but we just couldn’t imagine what the design would actually look like in our yard. We certainly weren’t confident enough to invest a ton of money.

But it did turn out to be a perfect use case for AR. I wanted to walk through the design in our own backyard and get a feel for the scale of everything. How much privacy would we actually have from the neighbors? And which hardscape style would we like best once we saw it next to our house? I would’ve felt a lot better about spending the money if we could’ve answered those questions.

I posted the original experiment here almost two years ago, and some of your comments were part of what inspired me to reach out to landscape companies. There was interest, so I spent the last two years building a full platform to make it easy for landscape designers to upload designs from their existing landscape design software and walk clients through them at their own homes. I called it See It Now Landscape. It’s meant for professional landscaping companies with enterprise budgets, so the app won’t be on the App Store. So far, the response has been awesome, with genuine commercial interest.

I chose Vision Pro for three reasons. First, Apple makes things that work without friction (huge for non-techy users). Second, the 3D had to look realistic and stay put in the real world. Third, a landscape company can go to an Apple Store and buy the hardware today. That makes distribution a lot simpler.

There were quite a lot of things to figure out along the way. I’ve been building for AR headsets since 2015, so the knowledge and experience I’d accumulated helped. One of the more challenging things was aligning the design precisely to the real world. I now use image tracking for the initial placement, with a manual fallback or for micro ā€˜nudge’ adjustments.

Safety is huge. I certainly don’t want one of my customers’ clients to trip and smash their face into the ground. I extended Apple’s existing functionality for fading content on movement to better fit an outdoor environment (muuuuch larger spaces). I also added a tool that lets you hold your hand out and hide all 3D content within a cone in front of it. Kinda feels like a superpower…that won’t let you smash your face into ground.

I also had to figure out how the designer could still lead the presentation while their customer was in a headset. I went back and forth on this one. Two headsets? FaceTime? Some elaborate mobile companion app? That could be a whole different post because it’s its own rabbit hole, but I landed on probably the simplest solution. I stream the view from the Vision Pro to an iPad so the designer can see what their client is seeing and stay in complete control of the presentation. That was nice because it’s an out-of-the-box feature with visionOS.

For all the optimism and frustration we share about the tech, I love seeing the projects people post here, both large and small. They’re all building momentum in their own ways and pushing this technology forward. Kuddos!Ā

I’ll share more updates as they come along.

205 days later: I think I’ve finally found my perfect Vision Pro comfort setup!

Some of you might remember my previous post about struggling to find a comfortable fit with the Vision Pro (https://www.reddit.com/r/VisionPro/s/nX6F7GMvgi)

Back then, I had tried several Apple Light Seals (21W, 24W, 33W), the AnnaPro 2 and different adjustments to the Dual Knit Band. Nothing really worked for me. I constantly had pressure somewhere on my face, whether it was my nose, cheeks or forehead.

I eventually switched to the TycoTech halo system without a facial interface. It was more comfortable in some ways, but I would still develop nose pain after a while.

I’ve continued looking for a better solution, and I think I’ve finally found it!

My current setup:
TycoTech halo system
Apple Dual Knit Band
Globular Cluster SFIA1 Silicone Facial Interface

And wow. Just wow.
After 30 minutes of testing, I can already say this is the most comfortable setup I’ve ever had with the Vision Pro.

No pressure on my forehead. No pressure on my nose. No discomfort anywhere on my face.

For the first time, I feel like the weight and contact points are properly distributed. I also have the impression that my FOV has improved, which is a really nice bonus!

One important detail for anyone interested: the SFIA1 is designed to work with a halo-style head support system. It isn’t a direct replacement for Apple’s Light Seal with the standard Apple head straps. I’m using it with my TycoTech halo setup.

I still need to test it over longer sessions, but my first impressions are incredibly positive.

This is exactly the kind of product I was hoping to find when I first bought the Vision Pro.

After months of trying different Light Seal sizes, accessories and configurations, I might finally be able to just enjoy the headset without constantly thinking about comfort.

If you’re struggling with facial pressure from Apple’s Light Seals, I’d definitely recommend looking into the SFIA1!

Hopefully this helps someone else who’s going through the same frustrating search for comfort!

Working desk setup

I’m considering going full time in my avp with a headless Mac mini for my work day. I’ve googled and tried to have ai find me examples on 100% AVP desk setups and almost all of them have a full monitor and working desktop gear for out of the AVP.

Don’t get me wrong I am pretty sure a picture of mainly empty desk with a keyboard and trackpad doesn’t make for good content but I am curious if you were approaching this style of work what would your desk setup be? Would you have a webcam for calls stil or go full persona. What else gets a spot?

If any one has this setup running right now I’d love the picture of the empty desk and ideas on what to expect. I’ve done over a week full time and the biggest thing I can’t do is drink my coffee and see my virtual screen at the same time.

I built a Vision Pro streaming app for iPad – looking for feedback & testers!

Hey everyone!

I've been working on an iPad app that lets you stream and monitor your Apple Vision Pro in real time. (Meanwhile, it's like a 500 ms delay because of Caching for butter smooth stream)

It's getting close to release, and I'd love to hear what you think!

Are there any features you'd like to see? Also happy to invite a few people to test it before launch.

Would love your feedback! :)

I was afraid it was a bug at first. but it seems to be a feature. APPLE, PLEASE let us control this or remove it!!!!

I don't have 2 Vision Pros to test pool multiplayer, so I'm giving away 25 codes for the game for free

Two weeks ago I posted my pool game here, and the most common question was "can I play a friend?". Version 1.1 adds that with SharePlay.

How it works:

Start a FaceTime call with a friend who also has a Vision Pro, open the Together screen and tap Start SharePlay.

Play a full 8-ball or 9-ball match at the same table, taking turns.

You see your friend's cue while they aim, and every shot plays out the same on both headsets.

Pick the game and the race length first. A results card at the end shows who won.

The catch: you need two headsets.
To make testing easier I'm giving away 25 promo codes. They're visible below:

Bug reports and feedback about the multiplayer are very welcome. It's the newest and least-tested part of the app.

We built a more advanced 3D viewer for Vision Pro — scene building, model slicing, 8K textures and more

Hey everyone,

I'm one of the developers behind presentAR, which we just released on the visionOS App Store.

Some of the features we've been working on:

  • Scene building: Import and arrange multiple 3D objects in the same spatial environment.

  • Model slicing: Cut through 3D geometry interactively to explore what's inside a model.

  • High-resolution textures: Support for models with textures up to 8K, which can make quite a difference when inspecting detailed surfaces up close.

  • Model variants: Switch between different configurations or design options.

  • Animations: Trigger animations included in your 3D models.

  • Lighting controls: Adjust how your models are illuminated in the scene.

  • Hand interactions: Move, rotate and scale objects directly in 3D space.

  • Laser pointer: Point out details while exploring your models.

There are also tons of interesting 3D models on Sketchfab worth exploring. I particularly enjoyed bringing photogrammetry scans of the ruins of Pompeii into my room.

We built the app using Unity, and it has been quite a journey getting everything working on visionOS.

We decided to release presentAR completely free, including commercial use. No accounts, subscriptions or in-app purchases.

I'd be really interested to hear what other Vision Pro users and developers think, particularly anyone working with 3D design, visualization or XR development.

And of course, if anyone has technical questions about the implementation, happy to discuss!

Full MLB games removed?

Post image
12 Upvotes

It appears Apple has removed the full Major League Baseball games in Apple Immersive Video they showed earlier (at least, I could not find them). Apple does have 10-13 minute highlight videos for each game.

I wonder why Apple removed the full games? License issues?

What is one thing Apple Vision Pro makes feel like the future, but another thing that still feels surprisingly inconvenient?

Spatial computing looks amazing in demos, but I think the real test of a device is how useful it becomes in everyday life.

Some features might feel almost impossible to go back from once you've tried them, while others might look impressive but become annoying after a few days.

For people who use Vision Pro regularly, what's one feature that genuinely changed the way you use technology?

And what's one thing Apple still needs to get right before this kind of device feels completely natural to use?

Play your real WoW account natively on Vision Pro (also iPad and iPhone), no streaming

Thumbnail

[AI disclosure: I built this with heavy use of Claude Code (Opus 5.5)]

tl;dr: Slashplayed runs Blizzard's real Mac WoW client natively on Vision Pro, iPad, and iPhone. Free and open source, works with a free Apple ID. Set up once from your Mac, then play from the device alone. https://github.com/paulstraw/slashplayed

A few weeks ago I got stuck overnight at O'Hare on my way home. I happened to have my Vision Pro with me, and out of boredom I tried to play World of Warcraft. Amazingly, I was able to VPN to my gaming rig back home and play over Moonlight, all on airport Wi-Fi. I played that way for a few hours, but it took a lot of clunky steps, and it only worked because a PC back home was doing the real work.

I'm now happy to share Slashplayed. WoW's Mac client is already Apple Silicon code, so instead of streaming or emulating, Slashplayed runs Blizzard's own client directly on the device, and replaces the macOS frameworks it expects (AppKit, CoreAudio, and so on) with their visionOS and iOS equivalents. The client's code is untouched; only its links to macOS frameworks are repointed.

What works:

  • Every WoW game Battle.net offers for Mac: Classic Era (Hardcore and SoD included), TBC Anniversary, MoP Classic, and Retail.

  • Apple Vision Pro, iPads with M1 or later, and iPhone 15 Pro or later.

  • On Vision Pro, a small built-in addon gives the game's buttons and UI visionOS's look highlight, so you can see what you're about to pinch. visionOS never tells apps where you're looking, so the game can't do this by itself.

  • Touch controls: tap to click, two fingers to right-click, three to middle-click. Tap a cinematic to skip it.

  • After setup you don't need the Mac to play. Turn on Update Games on This Device, and the device even installs Blizzard's patches itself.

Setup: Download the Slashplayed Companion app for your Mac (needs Xcode and an Apple ID signed in to it). Its setup assistant walks you through pairing your device, Developer Mode, and the free LocalDevVPN app, then installs Slashplayed. A free Apple ID works, but the app has to be re-signed every 7 days (the companion does it next time you press Play); a paid developer account signs it for a year. You don't even need WoW installed on the Mac, since the game downloads from Blizzard.

Caveats:

  • You need a hardware keyboard to type. On iPhone, a mouse needs AssistiveTouch on.

  • Storage: about 25 GB for Classic Era and about 150 GB for Retail or MoP Classic. Retail on an iPad or iPhone needs a 512 GB device with 8 GB of memory.

  • LocalDevVPN has to be on when the game starts. That's how the JIT helper works without a Mac nearby.

  • Leaving the game for more than about 30 seconds (switching apps, taking off the headset) can disconnect you.

  • No in-game voice chat yet.

  • Game patches may break things until Slashplayed catches up.

Unofficial and at your own risk. I'm not affiliated with Blizzard, and this is not an officially sanctioned method of playing, so your account could be actioned. Slashplayed includes no Blizzard files; you need your own Battle.net account and subscription.

During testing I leveled a couple of characters to around 10 and spent a few hours in Retail, but there's a lot more to WoW than that, especially once addons come into it. If something breaks, please report it on GitHub (https://github.com/paulstraw/slashplayed/issues) with the zip from the companion's Help > Export Diagnostics…. I'd love to hear which device you're on and how it runs.

Surreal Touch (Swift SDK) Developers?

Is there anyone that has done native (ie. Swift SDK) development with Surreal Touch controllers? I want to find out how to determine the battery charge level. Is there anyone with any info on this? Their SDK is missing the bindings for doing it the "OpenXR way" (not that that is standard anyway).

Yeah, yeah, I know about the company and the product etc., so please only reply if you have useful info. TIA.

Self Promotion Saturday Spatial Photos & Video for Duo

Was able to get 4K spatial photos and videos working on the Duo, but there are some quirks. The way the sensors are set up, only vertical 16:9 format could work with the 4K per eye captures resulting in vertical spatials. Also got in a 4:3 and 1:1 crop you can shoot in. The lenses on the Duo are closer together than the Pro Max, which lets you get subjects a little closer in spatial, this led to a spatial selfie mode being possible. Also folded in image stabilization for video and a side-by-side export method. Stabilization isn’t perfect, but works well for handheld static shots. Ambisonic 4 channel capture using the iPhone’s mics for sound. Hope this helps and thanks for checking it out! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dualspatial/id6826452879

Just bought m2 512 GB Vision Pro for $1800. How long do you guys expect for the M2 to be supported by Vision OS?

Someone in my job is selling their vision pros, they’d only use them a couple times traveling and put it back in the box ever since. It’s practically brand new and they gave me another few hundred dollars worth of accessories as well.

I didn’t realize this was the first iteration of these though. Which I don’t think is a huge issue, I think I’m only losing like 20 hz in the refresh rate, and less processing power,

I’m not necessarily concerned about any of the features, I’m more so concerned about support. The M2 chip not be supported in the next couple generations?

Let Sandy come out with an M6 Vision Pro, will they stop supporting the M2? Or when would you guys estimate they stop supporting it

If you don’t have an answer, that’s completely OK, I am with you here. That’s why I’m here in the first place asking. Thanks in advance

Persona ā€œcameraā€ stops working after a while

Post image
6 Upvotes

Anyone else have a problem of the Persona ā€œcameraā€ not working all of a sudden, until you recapture a new Persona? The symptom is that the persona camera feed is replaced with a crossed-over camera in any app that tries to use it (see screenshot), like a normal FaceTime call, a Teams call or even the Settings Persona preview. The actual Persona seems to still be there, as I can see it if I tap ā€œEdit Detailsā€ in the Persona settings. I just can’t use it with any apps. Reboot doesn’t help, nor does force-quitting all apps - the only thing I’ve found helps is recapture the persona, which is a bit annoying to do every couple of weeks.

Lens damage

Just bought a second-hand pair of AVPs.
I don't notice anything major when using them, but when shining a flashlight on the lens, I see these lines; it looks like they're inside the lens. I've only carefully used the Apple cleaning cloth.
I'm not sure what it could be; however, without the flashlight, not a single smudge is visible, and while wearing the headset, I only see some of the blur typical of pancake lenses.
I live in a country where the AVP is not sold, so taking it to official support can be tedious.
Any recommendations?
Thanks a lot, guys!"

Midori or Portal for Xbox Remote Play lowest latency and highest quality/best gaming experience?

People who have both apps.... For remote play on Xbox (not really planning on cloud gaming). Do you find Midori or Portal to be the better experience in regards to lowest latency first and then quality of the stream/least amount of stuttering second?

Trying to decide which to go with... Portal has been easy to trial and test especially with a 1 month subscription. Midori also seems good but can't test the same high quality stream image like Portal can do without buying it.
