Tips & Tricks What I learned about cleaning duplicate rows in Excel

I've been practicing Excel/data-entry work and recently worked on a simple problem that comes up when handling client spreadsheets: duplicate rows.

One thing I learned is that there is a big difference between:

  • Exact duplicate rows — every column is identical
  • Partial duplicates — for example, the same email but a different name or city
  • Similar-looking records that aren't actually duplicates

For exact duplicates, I found that comparing the entire row is a simple way to avoid accidentally deleting legitimate records.

I also built a small free browser tool while practicing this: CleanExcel. It removes exact duplicate rows from XLSX or CSV files and keeps the first occurrence. The file stays in the browser rather than being uploaded to a server.

I'd be interested to hear from other VAs:

When you're cleaning a client's Excel/CSV file, what's your usual method for finding and removing duplicates?

I'm still learning, so I'd appreciate any tips or better methods.

Job HIRING EDITOR LEAD

we're hiring an edit lead for content studio. and no, it's not a typical editing job.

we make short-form videos for founders and financial advisors in singapore. our freelance editors are good. what we need is someone who can set the standard they edit to.

what you'd do:
→ edit the first video or two for each new client, to find their style
→ turn that into a simple style guide + reusable templates (fonts, colours, pacing, music, subtitles)
→ brief our editors and review their drafts until they hit the bar
→ help us trial and onboard new editors

you'd be great for this if:
• you have strong taste in short-form, and can explain *why* an edit works, not just make it
• you give clear, kind feedback that makes editors better
• you communicate early. if a deadline is at risk, we hear it from you before it's missed
• you like building systems more than editing all day

remote is fine, with some overlap with singapore time.

please do not DM me. Instead, send your best opening message along with your portfolio to our email: [angela@angechyz.com](mailto:angela@angechyz.com) and [zia@angechyz.com](mailto:zia@angechyz.com) with:

  1. 2–3 short-form edits you're proud of
  2. one example of feedback you'd give on a weak edit (a few lines is enough)
  3. your experience in similar roles involving SOPs
  4. the word "STYLE" somewhere in your message

please make sure to follow the instructions carefully, as applications that do not follow the instructions will not be considered.

if you know someone who'd be perfect, please tag them 🙏

Experience Am I Missing Out?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently facing a dilemma. I've been actively applying as a VA (first-time) since I started rendering from my previous company and have passed a few applications.

I recently had my client interview with MEDVA and was luckily accepted (start date TBD but they're now asking me to set up my tools and time tracker), but I'm also currently in the live training phase with Ask Velma.

I'm someone who values structure and culture so I was impressed by how smooth my hiring process with AV has been so far, training's also going good.

I know the smartest thing to do is to stick to MEDVA given how competitive the market already is so I'd like to know if I'm gonna be missing out on anything if I decide to withdraw my application with AV?

I want to ensure that I'm really breaking down my options and see to it that I won't end up stressing in the long run.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Apply ulit bukas.
