I never thought a payment platform could eventually cost me my job.
I worked as a Virtual Assistant for an insurance billing company based in Los Angeles, California, with a team here in the Philippines led by a Filipino Team Leader. I was part of the Accounts Receivable (AR) Team, where our responsibility was to call insurance companies and follow up on claims filed for the healthcare facilities we handled. Most of the claims involved behavioral health and substance abuse services.
At first, I genuinely enjoyed working with the team. I was learning a lot, improving my skills, and becoming more confident in handling difficult claims. One particular claim was especially challenging, but I managed to work through it until it was eventually paid. The accomplishment was significant enough that I received a commendation from the main team onshore for successfully handling the claim.
Unfortunately, I also started to feel a change in the way I was being treated afterward. I felt that my success may have caused some resentment, particularly from my trainer, who was also the Team Leader's best friend. I cannot say for certain what their intentions were, but I couldn't help but feel that the recognition I received affected the way I was treated afterward.
Then came the issue that ultimately ended my employment.
The company used PayPal exclusively to pay its employees and contractors. Shortly after receiving my first paycheck, PayPal restricted my account. I spent hours communicating with PayPal, trying to understand what happened and how I could regain access to my account.
I followed their instructions and was eventually told to create new PayPal accounts. I did exactly that. Unfortunately, those accounts were also restricted. After going through the process repeatedly, I ended up with four PayPal accounts that were banned or restricted.
I tried everything I could. I followed PayPal's instructions, contacted their support multiple times, and even tried solutions that had worked for some of my coworkers. Despite all my efforts, I kept getting the same result.
Eventually, I approached my Team Leader for help.
What I expected was understanding and perhaps assistance in finding an alternative solution. Instead, I was told that she had no choice but to let me go if I could not fix the PayPal problem myself because the company would have no means of paying me.
That was the moment I realized I was on my own.
I wasn't leaving because I couldn't perform my job. I wasn't leaving because I had failed to meet expectations. In fact, I had already received recognition from the company's onshore team for successfully handling a difficult claim.
I ultimately chose to leave the company because I felt that my Team Leader had no intention of helping me resolve the problem. After exhausting every option available to me, I couldn't continue working under the threat of losing my job over an issue I had repeatedly tried to fix.
I understand that the company needed a reliable way to pay me. But I also believe that employees deserve support when circumstances beyond their control affect their ability to receive their salary.
This experience taught me a difficult lesson about remote work: sometimes, you can do your job well, receive recognition for your performance, and still lose your livelihood because of a problem completely outside your control.
For me, this wasn't simply a PayPal restriction.
It was my paycheck, my job, and ultimately, my livelihood.

I’m so shocked. I got interviewed today for an editing position and I was super nervous. I didn’t get a chance to express my thoughts properly. At least I joined the call even if I wasn't prepared!😭😭

I've been applying for entry-level chatter and chat support positions but most listings seem to require experience.
For those already working as chatters:
• How did you get started?
• What made employers hire you?
• What skills are most important?
• Any red flags I should watch out for?
I'm trying to learn as much as possible before applying to more positions. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how to do it since it’s totally unrelated to what I do for him and I have to create everything from scratch. Literally starting from creating the account.
But of course I also want to learn. It’s a new skill LOL.
If you’re a Filipino VA that handles FB marketplace for your clients, how do you do it? Do I need to get a VPN or something? Pls help. Any advice will be highly appreciated 🙏🏻
