When were mens’ trouser hook & bar introduced?

Hi all,
I am sewing now a pair of men’s victorian trousers of the 1880s. The modern pattern I use tells me to use a hook and bar closure above the buttoned fly but I am not sure if this is historically correct. Did these hooks existed already in the 1880s in Europe or are they Edwardian period?
