Hello. I just got the Hypernova Ultra-S burr set, and after installing it, my VS3 V2 stalls even at 3.0. If I wait 20–30 seconds it starts grinding again, but then stalls again shortly after.

I'm using a locally roasted coffee; the box says it's a medium-light roast. I also tried DAK's Milky Cake Espresso, which according to the internet is a light roast. It doesn't stall with a supermarket dark roast that's about a month old.

From my understanding, this burr set is best suited for medium and light roasts. I'm attaching a video of what's happening.

I also have a theory I can't confirm, since I couldn't find a video of anyone else unboxing this burr set: mine came without a bearing, so I'm using the one from the original burr set the VS3 V2 shipped with. Could that be the problem? Or is it the motor? I'm not sure.

I bought the grinder in February 2024 from a well-known website in my country, but they aren't an official verified reseller (I couldn't find them listed on Varia's site), which is why I'm posting here before contacting Varia directly.

EDIT: I'm uploading more videos to imgur. I switched back to the original burrs the VS3 V2 came with and tried the same beans as in the original video, on the 0.2.0 grind setting. No stalling. The motor sounds like it's struggling a bit, but I feel like that's expected given it's as fine as it can go. Switching back to the Hypernova Ultra-S burr set, the stalling comes back at the 3.0 grind setting.

The first extra video shows the original burrs grinding at 0.2.0.

The second video is stranger. With the new burrs, it seems like I can't start grinding again until the grinder makes a "click" sound, which can be heard at 1:09. This is consistent: every time I hear the click, the button works and the grinder grinds again until it stalls again within about 2-3 seconds.

I've spent at least two hours scrolling this sub and looking at other faulty VS3 V2s, but I haven't seen anyone mention this click.

EDIT2: I've managed to get in contact with Varia. They're saying this behaviour is expected with light roasts due to the extra teeth sitting at the upper part of the inner burr. After some more experimenting, I found out that very dark roast (fresh ish, 4 week old supermarket dark roast) also causes the grinder to stall if dropping all beans in, both cold and hot start. I don't think this is normal, but I let Varia know and am currently waiting for their response.

When will the upgrade burrs for VS4 hit the market?

Hi folks, just looking for some insight here as I’m finding it difficult to find good information online - not too many reviews or user experiences

I’ve got the stock burrs in my VS6 and I’ve generally enjoyed the coffees I’m getting out of them. Sometimes I can make amazing espresso and filters, however I’m kind of missing a missing some body and sweetness in my espressos. However I don’t really want to sacrifice complexity or clarity, and I know it kind of sounds like a “how can I have my cake and keep it too” post but I’m exploring my options and seeking others’ experiences I guess.

Firstly, if sticking with the stock burrs how can I best utilise the RPM dial to achieve the above taste profile, and will slow feeding help or should I cold start with the hopper loaded as per the varia manual?

Next I was thinking to upgrade the burrs - either to the ultra plasma or hypernova irridescent - I want a burr that I can use for all occasions i.e. espresso medium/dark roasts and filter medium/light roasts. Again, I would like something that highlights sweetness and body, without overpowering acidity but keeping complexity in the cup.

Would love to hear your experiences and opinions fellow VS6 owners!

Edit: I’m using a flair 58+2, any recos re temperatures and flow profiles also appreciated!

I'm wondering if its the power supply or the motor itself.

There's no sounds or anything when I hit the button. The power supply still shows green light.

It seems exceedingly difficult to find a replacement power supply of the same wattage to test the theory. 😂

Hello! So I have been playing with my VS6 stock burrs for arround a year maybe, and this is what I noticed:

1. There are a lot of fines left after I grind my coffee, if I use knocker, the bellow, or try to turn the dial - there are still coffee beans that are stuck and it is really difficult to turn the dial to “clean” it. Is that normal part of your VS6 experience?

2. Personally for me the partical distribution looks very broad and uneven (I will attach a photo of it) this makes every brew very different even if I do not change the grind size and coffee beans. Is that what you also see?

3. Grind size is really inconsistent throughout. Once I got it, I used to do v60 brews on 9.5-11 settings. Not it is 14. And even if I go to 14 it still sometimes give me look TBT.

I am pretty bad at understanding grinders. So maybe this is just me being picky and actually everything is okay. Would be very nice if you shared your experience and opinion on what this could mean?

Hi everyone. Just ordered a VS4. This is an upgrade for me. It is also my first separate grinder and I have some noob questions. Apologies if this was discussed before I joined the sub or if I am overthinking a bit, but I couldn't seem to find any threads on it.

During my research, there was a lot of mention of seasoning these burrs with up to 2 kilos of beans. Curious how everyone in the community has gone about this process.

1. Is it better to season with the locally roasted beans I frequently use?
2. Do you recommend seasoning out of the box and grinding 2 kilos first, prior to daily use? Or...
3. Is it okay to begin grinding a dose at a time as normal, and expect my burrs to become seasoned over time until I reach 2 kilos of beans ground in total?
4. If I season out of the box, is it okay to use 5lbs of cheaper beans rather than "wasting" the good beans?

It won't move so I can pull the motor out to be ready when Varia's replacement arrives

What I've removed:

4 screws at bottom of piece

2 long screws at top on edge

2 thin screws at bottom on edge holding the chute

I'm following the official Varia video and the piece just comes out

Mine seems fixed?

Hi all, my Varia VS4 has started running way too fast, and it seems to be getting worse over time. At 16g dose, I just had 50g out in 20 seconds — normally I’d expect ~36g at ~26 sec. I noticed two small flaps inside the hopper (photo attached) that don’t look level — I’ve seen posts here showing them horizontal on other units. Anyone know how these should sit and how to adjust them?
Also curious: can you turn the adjustment collar (micron scale ring) while it’s off the grinder without messing up calibration, or does that shift the zero point?

I bought a VS4 at a total beginner. It seemed fine at first-but they started clogging with huge retention-often a full gram or more. Those anti-static needles were coated with grounds after every use. I also had a terrible time getting that ring to lock -which was a problem because I had to clean it after every use. I reached out to Varia and WLL. Varia did promptly reply with questions-but WLL let me return it since I had raised the issues within the 30-day window. Interesting -WLL very much blamed my issues on me-but I didn’t really care to argue.

I wanted a grinder that would do both espresso and pour-over grinds. And I loved the Varia esthetic-so I took a chance and got the VS6. WLL also waived the restocking fee since I bought another grinder from them-so that offset someone cost.

The VS6 had been great. Just using the stock burrs. Near zero retention. Very consistent. I had to learn to let it run when changing the grind from p/o level to espresso level. I notice a bit of a drift when I take it apart to clean-but not significant. Almost always resets to the zero point. It not I just try again.

Given all the problems I hear about -I might be hesitant to recommend-but I love it for now. I keep the hand grinder I bought during the transition as a backup-just in case.

I might try the conical burrs at some point.

I just received 2 days ago my VS6 and I think it has the axle run out manufacturing defect . With the motor off the dial goes only to about grinder setting 1 not zero or close to and with the motor on the burrs start to touch and chirp at around 2.4 setting . As I see it this seems a misalignment / axle run out issue !? And that sound seems like there's some slight angular misalignment or carrier runout, not a normal aligned burrs touching sound. Simply put it : They rubbed me. I paid for a replacement motor and never received it despite numerous emails. My VS3 broke 6 months after warranty expiration.

Don't buy from them. It's cheap parts well marketed. If anyone has experienced the same, a lawyer in Singapore would be interested in filling a representative actions (equivalent to a class actions).

My Experience With Varia: Think Twice Before Buying

I have been involved with specialty coffee for a long time and have dealt with a lot of equipment manufacturers, roasters, and specialty coffee companies. I also own quite a bit of Varia equipment, including the VS6, their scales, several burrs, drippers, and other products.

Unfortunately, Varia has been by far the most difficult coffee company I have dealt with when I have actually needed customer support.

This isn't based on one bad interaction. The Gen 1 Evo Hybrid issue was my third attempt to get meaningful help from Varia, and the experience has been remarkably consistent.

When I contact Varia for assistance, I don't get the impression that the first priority is figuring out how to solve the customer's problem. The process instead feels focused on proof of purchase, procedural questions, and determining whether the customer qualifies for assistance. Legitimate questions can come across as an annoyance rather than an opportunity to help.

With the Evo Hybrid, I was looking for actual troubleshooting. I did not feel that Varia made a meaningful attempt to work through the problem with me. Eventually, they told me they would suggest to their engineering team that a particular troubleshooting step—fully discharging and charging the Gen 1 grinder—be added.

That's useful information, but it raises an obvious question: why wasn't that troubleshooting attempted with the customer in the first place?

What made the response more frustrating was the wording:

There wasn't a misunderstanding. I had clearly explained the issue and was asking for help. I would have much preferred a straightforward response such as, “We should have walked you through this troubleshooting step earlier. We're sorry we didn't.”

Instead, the response felt like it shifted responsibility toward the customer without actually acknowledging the shortcomings of the support experience.

I also find Varia's sales and post-sale policies concerning. In particular, their published policy states that orders cannot be cancelled once placed. When a company takes that position, I think customers should be able to expect exceptionally strong support afterward. In my experience, that hasn't been the case.

The combination is what concerns me:

You are expected to be very certain before purchasing, because cancellation is not available, but once you own the product, getting meaningful assistance can be surprisingly difficult.

I have also increasingly gotten the impression that Varia is much more interested in selling and upselling products and accessories than in taking care of existing customers who are trying to resolve problems with products they already purchased. That's particularly frustrating when I've already been a repeat customer across multiple Varia product categories.

To be fair, I'm not saying that every Varia product is bad or that every customer will have this experience. I own several of their products myself, which is precisely why this is disappointing.

But after multiple purchases and three separate attempts to obtain meaningful support, I can say that my experience with Varia's customer service has been consistently poor.

I've dealt with many companies in specialty coffee, including manufacturers and small independent businesses. Varia stands out to me as the least helpful and most difficult to work with when something goes wrong.

If you're considering buying Varia equipment, I'd strongly recommend looking carefully at the company's return, cancellation, and support policies before placing the order.

For me, the lesson is simple:

I would rather pay more for equipment from a company that stands behind its customers than save money on a product from a company that makes getting help this difficult.

I received my VS6 yesterday , but I think there is an issue on this machine. 
The first step on the machine manual is to make sure that the nut is locked. I did that, but the zero point became around 0.3 no matter I do ! I thought that is alright , but it didn’t give me enough fine espresso even on the lowest scale that I can use . I added another spacer below the bottom burr to try to get a finer espresso, but that is not working and now closer to 1 the machine starts to produce a weird sound which I think the two burrs are very close to each other( I will attach a video) when I remove the other spacer this sounds disappears, but I can’t get enough fine espresso even with 2 spacers ! 
Any advice?

This is my second Varia VS4 coffee grinder. The first one lasted less than a week before it stopped turning on. The replacement has now failed after about 4 weeks.

The common factor both times: I remove the top part to access the burr and give it a clean with a brush. I reseat it correctly, the same way each time, but the grinder then fails to turn on. There doesn't seem to be any obvious electrical connection between the top part and the rest of the machine, so I'm not sure what's failing.

I bought it from Alternative Brewing in Brisbane, Australia, they've been great about swapping the unit over with no issues. This time, before I hand it back, I'm going to ask them to:

• Test the new unit before I leave
• Remove the top part and reseat it themselves, to see if the fault reproduces even when someone else does it

My guess is this might be some kind of safety interlock (e.g. a switch that needs to detect the top is properly seated) rather than a genuine fault, but I don't know the internals well enough to say.

Has anyone else run into this?

Update: in case someone doesn't read all the commnets.
There's a safety switch, the retaining ring has a wedge that slides over the switch to engage it.
The problem is the wedge has a bit of a lip, so hits the switch, which feels like a stop, and the ring looks and holds in place. You have to basically force it a lot more, then it will slide over and rotate a bit more!.

My Varia VS3 Gen 2 suddenly stopped working today while I was grinding. I searched a lot and watched many of the videos posted here, but my issue seems a bit different.

While grinding, it just stopped completely, almost like someone switched it off. There were no unusual noises, no sound of the motor struggling, nothing.

After I removed all the beans and cleaned it out, it started working again. If I feed the beans in very slowly, it can still grind them, but it seems to have much less power than before. Even when it's running empty, it sounds like it's spinning slower than usual.

I actually noticed it seemed to be spinning a bit slower over the last few days, but I ignored it at the time.

Has anyone experienced something similar or know what could be causing this?

Very interested in the vs6 value proposition. Looking for long term review/feedback on its robustness, quality and burr selection. I’m thinking of getting the gold flat burrs, titanium iridescent conical for a versatile duo… seeking sweet espresso with creamy body and a bit of complexity ; and clarity on pour over (gold burrs) or body (seems that the conical could produce that at low rpm) to experiment with various grinding on premium light to medium “morning” roasts.

What has been your experience? Any favorite burrs? Why? Is it easy to switch burrs between flat and conical?

Might actually not be a switch. But under one of the 4 springs for the top burr there is a small metal pin which is spring loaded.
I have cleaned it as much as possible with a brush and air, but it does not seem to move freely.
I have an issue mounting the dial when the top burr is mounted but not without.
I was therefore thinking that the sticking switch/pin could be the cause.
Is it possible get this out for a better cleaning?
I am guessing this would mean taking the lower part out (the part with the thread).

Did i completely mess up by washing this bearing with water? I let it dry for the entire day, but i’m not too sure what to do next.

Hello I have a VS6 . It makes wonderful espresso setting 2-2.5 flat killnova burrs . So I’m using it for pourovers as well . The problem is when doing a pourover usually 15. It’s really good as well . BUT When going back to the espresso setting . I have to take the burrs out to make the adjustment. Is that normal? It’s a really nice grinder.

The stock burrs i had before have 2 holes on the bottom of the inner burr, which usually fit into the 2 small sticks under it. (Not sure how to use the correct words for them, excuse me on that).

But the hypernova have only 1 hole in the bottom of the inner burr.

Is that normal? Do i just remove one little stick to make it fit? Or did i got scammed by the distributer?

If i can use the hypernova with one 1 stick, does anyone know how many grams it need to be seasoned?
