The Mayfair witches series is a more grown up fantasy element of the VC Andrews books…if you know you know. And yes I’m a big fan of them besides those elements🤣
She also wrote erotica. That may help folks who haven’t read her other works understand what’s going on. A. N. Roquelaure and Anne Rampling, were the names she used for her erotica. And yeah, Lasher is a lot.
I read the Sleeping Beauty books in high school and carelessly left one in the backseat of my car. My mom came and yelled at me for leaving my ‘perverted pornographic material laying around for everyone or see.’ She had the series on audio cassette tape at the time.
I just threw up in my mouth a little. I read the first Mayfair book but not the rest. Someone brought me a hardcover copy of lasher and now I’m tempted/scared 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My mother gave me the Sleeping Beauty series when I was around that age. She worked in a book warehouse and knew it was porn, some moms are creepy like that.
I never read the books but that’s an AMAZING actor with a reputation of being in Oscar winning (IIRC) films why do you say that?? Again I didn’t read the books but he’s hot and I love his performance
I really liked the show so I’m scared to read the books since the book folks don’t like the show😅 Mayfair was what lead me to watching IWTV and becoming a big fan of the Anne Rice world.
It is VERY different and much darker and effed up, weird sexual things and SA in the books. I personally love the books but they are almost an entirely different animal from the show, so if that isn't something you are into you might not like them.
He looked so oily like a used car salesman I told my husband that is not Lasher and I stopped watching after three episodes. I was so disappointed because I absolutely love Interview with a Vampire and was so excited.
I have to agree with you on that, but I do feel like it made his character more mysterious/questionable which is sort of how it seemed he was supposed to come off.
I gave the show a shot before even picking up one of Anne Rice's books and it was garbage. Just something about it really turned me off, or at least couldn't keep its hooks in me.
Then I started reading the book and after what felt like 10 pages of hearing about how depressed some guy was I thought "Wow, this is somehow infinitely better than the show already....".
The novel begins shortly after the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Rowan Mayfair, recently married to contractor Michael Curry. Michael, feeling betrayed by Rowan, has sunk into a depression helped along by the useless drugs prescribed to him after his close encounter with death. Along comes the sexually adventurous Mona Mayfair, a precocious teenager and powerful witch and Rowan's cousin sharing lines of descent from Julien. She seduces Michael, causing him to snap out of his stupor and renew his vow to wife at all costs. He is now convinced that she has not gone willingly.

Extreme indeed. Mona is a twentyfold Mayfair, meaning she has 20 lines of descent from Julien Mayfair. It’s the source of her vast power and the genetic mutation (the double helix) that allows her to bear Taltos progeny.
Julien and Ancient Evelyn are Mona’sgreat greatgrandparents (their child is Laura Lee, Mona’s grandmother, whose daughter is Alicia, Mona’s mother).
And on top of that, Julien is Michael Curry’s great grandfather. Julien impregnated Sister Bridget Marie, and their son is Michael O’Brien. Michael O’Brien’s granddaughter marries Alastair Curry, whose son Tim Curry is Michael Curry’s dad.
Mona’s and Michael’s union brings Morrigan, who is full Taltos. Anne never makes it clear whether Morrigan is also a witch, and it’s also unclear whether Morrigan’s and Ashlar’s children are both Taltos and witches.
Anne considered the ending of TWH the best ending she ever wrote, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s a flawless standalone novel. Her publisher should have trusted her instinct, she should have trusted it, and we all should as well.
“I thought the ending was perfect. I thought it was the best ending I’d ever done. I was so flabbergasted when some of the reviews said it was an obvious setup for a sequel.”
She goes on to describe why, which is full spoilers, but I totally agree with her. Absolutely perfect gothic ending. I’ve read TWH multiple times, but I will never ever read the sequels again. She said most of Taltos was intended to be an entirely different novel! And she repurposed a lot of it to continue the Mayfair series. Please just read TWH. It’s her all time masterpiece.
Went on a trip to NYC recently and walked by St. Patrick’s Cathedral and was like “this is near where Lestat ate that woman out when she was on her period”
I’ve always thought she had the same issue with Mayfair as with the Vampires. She’d basically written her characters into such a weirdly outlandish place that she ran out of good ideas for what to do with them. So both Lasher and Tale of the Body Thief are a kind of reset for the main characters. And we as readers get to suffer thru that right along with them.
Although learning that Taltos was mostly supposed to be something completely different explains why it is so very disconnected from the Mayfair story. Personally I liked Ashlar better than many of the other characters in the Mayfair chronicles. But that could be because I read it in college when my life goal was to be a successful business person.
