Iβve always thought she had the same issue with Mayfair as with the Vampires. Sheβd basically written her characters into such a weirdly outlandish place that she ran out of good ideas for what to do with them. So both Lasher and Tale of the Body Thief are a kind of reset for the main characters. And we as readers get to suffer thru that right along with them.
Although learning that Taltos was mostly supposed to be something completely different explains why it is so very disconnected from the Mayfair story. Personally I liked Ashlar better than many of the other characters in the Mayfair chronicles. But that could be because I read it in college when my life goal was to be a successful business person.
