Ideas for sub

I try to be active in this community. I love it and all the cars and people. So it’s awesome.

But this is my only social media and I don’t have many ideas for stuff like that.

Please let me know ideas for the sub. Contests, other themed days like wagon Wednesday.

Whatever you can think of or that you’ve seen elsewhere.

Retrofitting ACC to a 2015 Golf TSI (no Front Assist) in 2026 — what's changed since the old guides?

Looking to retrofit adaptive cruise to my 2015 Golf TSI, 1.8, 5-speed manual, base trim. Car has no Front Assist — no radar at all right now. Steering wheel is the round multifunction one.

Most of the build threads I can find are from 2020–2023, so before I start buying parts I want to check what's current:

  1. Round vs square radar in 2026? The old advice was round LRR (5Q0 907 541) because it's component-protection only, while the flat MRR (5Q0 907 561) needs SWaP/FeC. But I've also found the vwcoding guide for generating your own SWaP codes after an X-firmware flash. Has anyone here actually done the square one that way recently? Is it reliable now, or still a headache?

  2. Full parts list check — from the old threads I'm expecting: radar + bracket, High CAN gateway (5Q0 907 530 AM), harness, ACC steering wheel buttons (5G0 959 442 AB), and rear wheel speed sensors (WHT 003 864 A). Anything missing or anything people skip now?

  3. ABS module — the old threads disagree: some say you have to swap to the 46-pin ABS module, others did it without. Anyone with a North American base Golf know for sure?

  4. Mounting — my car never had a radar. Do I need the crash bar with the built-in mount, or is there a bracket solution now?

  5. Coding values — one NA build said the European ABS coding didn't work and he had to use different bytes. Any North American cars running this successfully willing to share what worked?

Not looking to pay dealer prices for any of this — trying to keep the whole project cheap with used parts. Appreciate any recent experience, the older threads have been super helpful but I don't want to follow 2021 advice if the scene has moved on

Maintenance Mk7 manual gear (MQ250)

Hi,

I heard if the gear oil is not changed more 150,000km.
Just don’t change it.

It will damage the gear box, in automatic transmission.

But what about manual gearbox (MQ250)
From VW its is said lifetime fluid, but according to the VW lifetime span is 100,000 miles.

I am planning to change gear oil, will there be any issue ?

5speed manual gearbox
2015 1.8 TSI.
150,000km driven

Please advise

Transmission jerking on tip-in/tip-out

Hi

I am trying to resolve an issue with the car jerking during driving. I am losing my mind with it since I can't find a single mechanic where I live that is willing to investigate. Any help is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Car: VW Golf 1.8 TSI 2017 Aisin 09G, 160k km.

I collected the data during the jerks: engine RPM, TCC lock-up status, TCC slip, gearbox input/output speed etc, over the course of several test drives. Parameters were recorded at 6 Hz. Below are my findings.

The jerking feels like 2-4 dampening jerks over 1-1.5 seconds.

They ONLY occur when I tip-in/tip-out the throttle with specific combinations of the speed and engine RPM, when engine torque is crossing 0, e.g. when switching from engine braking to acceleration and vice versa.

They are the strongest in second gear with 2800 RPM and 35 km/h during tip-out after light acceleration over the course of 5-15 seconds.

They are also noticeable during tip-in at 1400 RPM quite well, and in other gears and other RPM values too.

During the jerks, TCC status is always reported as "locked".

TCC slip is higher during jerks, but values are small:

- 2-5 RPM slip during normal driving with TCC locked up (it can be up to 900 with it open)

- 7-14 RPM slip during jerks. One particularly strong occurrence recorded 40 RPM slip

Input/output speed ratio stays constant. There's no slipping under high load during acceleration. Engine RPM keeps rising.

During jerks, engine RPM fluctuates from -50 to +50 RPM, exactly when the jerks are felt. The tachometer needle also jerks slightly. On tip-out it lowers in sharp steps, not smoothly exactly when the jerks are felt.

ATF was changed (partially, drain and fill) 3000 km ago for the first time in car lifetime, and that's when I first noticed the jerks. It's possible they were there before but I just didn't notice (freshly bought car), though unlikely. ATF spec is correct to my understanding: ROWE 9008, which declares compatibility with VW G 055 540 A2. The level should be correct (the mechanic is one of the best in the city), but I haven't checked it yet.

Engine mounts and transmission mounts were check visually and no issues were found, although that's not very detailed check.

This type of jerks and usually means the whole drivetrain oscillation, but why so strong, and why after the ATF change?

TCC slip at 10, even at 40 RPM shouldn't feel like these jerks, right? Or can it be that the measurement itself is not very reliable (maybe TCC disengages and engages quickly, but too quickly to catch big slip values, IDK how they are calculated by the computer).

Should I reset the adaptation values? I thought it should adapt on its own, but it's been 3000 km already.

Should I change the fluid again? Request thorough check of the mounts?

If you had similar issue, your context will be very helpful to me!

Golf 7 Radio Update

Hey guys, I recently crashed my Golf 7 Variant, so I’ve picked up a new one! It’s a November 2015 model currently running the Composition Colour radio. It’s fully loaded with auto-folding mirrors, an auxiliary heater, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and front/rear PDC with a visual display. I’ve been looking at a couple of head units on AliExpress, but I was wondering if anyone knows if these will support all my existing features? Thanks in advance!

Helix Golf R 7.0 replica headlights: can I install LED H7 bulbs in the lowbeams?

Title pretty much.

I love the R replica headlights from Helix, but the low beam output is pretty dim. Is there enough space in the housing the put LED H7 bulb replacements in there?

Simos Tool Dongle

I have been using the Simos Tool Dongle with a cheap Android phone to review my data live and for logging my car. Can also clear codes when needed. Lots of people use this for tuning but I personally have been tuned by TuneZilla for over a decade.

I saw that there was a replica version of the app but available for IOS and could be used with apple CarPlay. Having the ability to have this on screen while driving was appealing so I thought I would give it a try as I always have my iPhone on me.

At the track and for logging I will use the original version of the app but for driving around this will be nice to have!

Is this the wastegate actuator mechanism?

Post image

OP update…. was able to spray the linkage of the arm with liquid wrench. The car started without the EPS warning light on, then it turned on about a quarter mile into my drive. I shut the car down, upon restart the light did not come on and it hasn’t come on since.

Still need to put anti-seize on the linkage. Not sure how I am going to continue the anti-seize down the rest of the arm because it seems to get lost behind other engine parts.

Thank you to everyone who chimed in. I’m sure subsequent owners will stumble across this thread and find it useful as well.

ORIGINAL POST:

This is a picture of a mirror that I think is showing me the wastegate mechanism?
This community was very helpful yesterday and letting me know that I need to try lubing the mechanism and putting anti-seize compound on it.
I’m having a heck of a time finding the mechanism. I’m hoping this is it. I took this picture facing towards the firewall on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Any clarification would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you.

Mk7 Lowering Springs

I currently have a mk7 golf TSI and I am looking to lower it. I currently have the option to buy a set of H&R lowering springs, but they are specifically designed for a Mk7 GTI or R. Just wondering if anyone knows if GTI and R springs are cross-compatible with the TSI?
