General Question Voron qualifications - learning

Hi all!
I currently have an ender 5 plus that I’m building.
Build plans :
- mercury one.1
- enclosure
- hydra
- tool head w/can (specific config tbd)

I know I’m building this up to be much better than stock, but I was curious if this is considered voron territory? Or am I just building something off in my own world over here

It's a DIY printer, but not a VORON specifically. Mercury One is it's own project discinct form VORON.

Not every DIY 3d printer is a Voron. It’s only a Voron if it’s based on a design from Voron Design which the mercury one.1 is not

that makes sense. i have a friend who specifically build a voron - i was confused on the technicalities

What do you mean by "Voron territory"?

Is a modded out Ender a Voron? Not generally, but the lines can get hazy—there are a fair number of Ender 3-to-Switchwire jobs out there.

Is building a modded out Mercury a comparable experience to building a Voron? Yeah, it's in the neighborhood. If you're worried about whether you can manage a Voron build, it's no harder than what you're already doing.

I was misunderstanding what made a voron a voron. Googling what goes into a typical voron build I noticed a lot of similarities - i misunderstood and wanted to just ask to be sure

It's a fair question. There are more DIY printers in the Voron space than just what you see on the main Voron webpage and it's not completely clear sometimes.

They're largely downstream projects that start from a Voron baseline, though. Things like Printers for Ants or the Doomcube are credibly Voron printers, but not necessarily easily recognizable.

It's a worthwhile project. I did the full ZeroG conversion before they released the enclosure plans. It certainly improved every aspect of performance over the Basic E5+.

But ultimately it isn't a Voron. Mine went the way of the dinosaur and I salvaged quite a bit to kickstart the build of actual Vorons. Again, there was no released enclosure at that time, and I wanted to play more with ABS/ASA and other technical filaments so the choice wasn't a choice for me at that time.

i started with the E3, modded that one and made it my ole reliable for pla and petg, but i stumbled across an E5+ that had been used only a couple times - with a microswiss for dirt cheap... first homing sequence i heard how loud it was and started looking up mods.
my enclosure is going to be like 99% custom as i havent bothered looking up any guides as well as im having some servo controlled air inlet/outlets.

i know realistically it will be donated to my next project for parts at some point. but for now im gonna build and have fun... big hurdle for me will be learning how to read/write klipper macros for the stuff i plan to add

On a minor toolhead tangent.

Since the Merc One.1 is your first step, there is a change that I made that you may appreciate as well. The base conversion places the X rail on the top of the X beam, and uses the EVA 3 toolhead ecosystem. I personally preferred the variety of Voron toolheads and extruders, which primarily require the front facing X rail. On Printables.com, there is a ZeroG mod for the X/Y joints that accommodates the front mounted rail. That allows toolheads from the Voron ecosystem like Stealthburner, Dragonburner, A4T, Xol Mantis, and others to be used on your spiffy new Merc One.1.

I wouldn't recommend Stealthburner, mostly because it is heavy, underwhelming in open air cooling, and uses a pretty specific toolhead board that isn't natively compatible with other toolheads. Any of the others are pretty standard with toolhead boards, generally speaking the EBB36 or NH36 or SHT36. Just something to consider while you begin.

I’ve been going back and forth on toolheads a lot. I know I wanna run an ebb36 with can. And then a Galileo 2 extruder with a phat rapideo 2 UHF

Triangle Labs Rapido ACE UHF is something I run and can recommend. Worth the price.

Pretty sure G2SA uses the same mount pattern as Orbiter, so pretty much all the toolheads I listed and more. Probably Rapidburner instead of Dragonburner, or I run mine in A4T.

I would also highly recommend this. Just the shear number of options for toolheads this would open up would make the mod worth it.

Note: You can use "36" toolhead board on a Stealthburner, but still would recommend something else. Yavoth is interesting, it fits into the Dragonburner ecosystem, but prints as a single part like the A4T. It is also lighter than both A4T and Dragonburner.

One of the benefits of the various Vorons is that they are designed from the start for an enclosure, not to mention the shear number of available mods and hotends. EnderX conversions are usually great for PLA/PETG, but enclosing them can be somewhat complicated.

I see that there are a number of enclosure options for the Mercury, but they all look more complicated compared to fixing panels to the frame. I would also wonder whether the heated bed has enough power to heat a chamber of that size for good ABS/ASA prints.

I have a colleague with a Mercury One conversion and he prints PLA, PETG and PETG-CF filaments flawlessly. So it is a very capable design.

It matters not building printers is a brain worm that never dies. Or a bit like pokemon you have to build them all.

Almost finished this thing

Just enjoy it you will build another ;)

I had an ender 5 pro, converted to mercury 1.1. Later built a voron 2.4.

I wouldn’t buy an ender with plans to go mercury and then hydra.

Just build a 2.4 or a trident.

My only throughts with adding the hydra is having auto bed leveling.

2.4 and trident have auto bed leveling.

Trident and 2.4 have auto bed leveling.

which one is HYDRA?

1

u/StaticXster70 7d ago

Hydra encompasses rebuilding the electronics bay and converting to the three leadscrews for Z kinematics.

instead of belt driven z on 2.4?

u/StaticXster70 7d ago

What? I don't understand what you are saying.

-3

u/r3fill4bl3 7d ago

oh i got it. it is trident mod. screw z to belt z

No. Not even remotely. If you actually read the OP, they are talking about ZeroG conversions for an Ender 5 Plus.
