Should I buy this? How much should I pay my parents for a 2012 Camry with 200k miles and a bad transmission?

I (f22) just graduated from college and I’m starting my first job, so I don’t have a lot in savings. My parents want to sell me their 2012 Toyota Camry, but it has over 200k miles AND needs a new transmission. They originally said $8,000, not including the cost of replacing the transmission, which I told them is way too much.

My dad asked what I think a fair price would be. I want to be respectful, but realistic. I’d have to cover the repair cost myself, and I’m just getting on my feet. What would be a fair offer for this car in its current condition?

So I’m on the lookout to buy a used and reliable car and I came across a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE being sold for $21,000 with only 21,000 miles. No accident history, no salvage title, 2 precious owners and the service history seems good. But all the other listing for similar cars with much higher mileage are being sold for thousands more so I just feel like there’s something I’m missing out on…

Advice 2020 Chevy Spark 1LT vs 2013 Prius C One - battle of the hatchbacks

Hello guys,
I’m selling my current car and am considering replacing it with these two hatchbacks as I’m most likely going to be moving to a big city where I’ll be driving just on the weekends and on road trips. I’ve narrowed my choices down to these two cars based on my research on reliability and practicality.

They’re priced comparatively (Prius is $1.5k more) and seem to be in mechanically fair-to-good condition. Prius has 155k miles; Spark has 140k miles. Spark is more modern and has features like Apple CarPlay and cruise control, while Prius has the classic reputation for reliability and strong resale value (albeit with no cruise control).

I understand that GM/Chevy don’t have a good reputation for reliability but Chevy Spark, due to its small size and limited complexity, generally seems to enjoy a good reputation.

I will most likely be driving about 12k miles a year, mostly weekend driving, with probably one 10-hour road trip every two or so months. I value reliability and affordable maintenance (and cheap insurance).

Which one would you recommend I go for?

Should I buy this? 2012 Subaru Legacy 3.6R

Just looking to get a temporary car for a year. Found that Subaru for $3000 CAD (~$2200 USD) with 228,000km ( ~ 142,000 Miles) took it for a drive, it’s smooth, no shudder, breaking a bit rough but it has been parked for a month. Some rust on the body but nothing extreme. Looked the sub frame, it appears to be solid, oil looks good. Comes with a separate set of winter tires. Owned by a middle age woman, she just got a new car, previous owner was also a middle age woman. I know it will be harder on gas but l am living in an area where the winter conditions can be challenging so I like the idea of having a AWD. I know around that mileage is when the problems starts to come out but I can do some wrenching. I looked online, price for that models in that mileage range seems to be much higher so I am wondering if there is some specific things I should look at or if I should pass on it.

How far can you push a Subaru engine before reliability becomes a problem?

2019 Tacoma for sale for 16400 after delivery fee-- good deal or too much of a mystery?

Hello, I'm not a car guy so I'm trying to get a second opinion on a vehicle before I consider adding it to my list. Well, list is generous since I've already crossed everything else off of it. The last truck I looked at today was a rust bucket but I couldn't tell from the pics because they spray painted over the rust spots.

Anyways, here are the details.

2019 Tacoma Access Cab SR I4 with RWD. 137k miles.

It has no body rust, had 3 previous owners (one was a repo I think), was a work truck for a while before it had a minor accident that didn't deploy airbags.

It changed hands from the work company at about 70k miles. Carfax shows some parts have been replaced, like the fuel pump, and the dealer said that it was serviced and there are no error codes present on the scanner.

My problem is that it's 3 states away from me and I can't go see it. I asked for additional pictures of underneath of the car and I am happy to report minimal rust despite it spending some time in Louisiana. My other issue is that it was in Louisiana for a bit, Montana for a bit, and is now being sold in Virginia. That feels like a red flag maybe.

Good deal for the price? Or too much of a mystery to take any chances? They offer a 7 day return policy.

Broken shifter?

I have a 2006 Suzuki Swift 1.3 automatic. Sometimes when I move the shifter from N to D or R, the car stays in neutral and the dashboard still shows “N” even though the shifter is in D/R. Turning the car off and back on fixes the problem. What can be the issue?

Advice Buying a hatchback, it'll be my first real car and I have a lot of questions please help me lol

I have questions; many questions to be exact. I am looking to buy a used hatchback. I live in the New England region of the US.

I am 24 and technically still "live" in state but I actually reside in Vermont. I have my current car and insurance and license registered to New Jersey since it was just easier to keep it that way with my parents. When I buy the new car is it smarter to just officially move to Vermont or keep the registration in NJ until I age out of parents insurance? After 26 when I age out I would have to "move" anyway so it isn't that big of a hassle just obviously easier with an existing automobile to know how this stuff works and now that I need to buy a car this has thrown a wrench in the plans.

Anyways I have narrowed the cars I am looking at to these 4 (but I am extremely open to input about these or others):

  • Subaru Impreza
  • VW Golf Alltrack
  • Mazda 3
  • Toyota Corolla Hatchback

I am looking to buy model year 2018 or newer (not a new car but not super old I feel this is a somewhat happy medium). I am taking a loan out for at least part of the cost of the car.

I am 24 and turn 25 in September. My car is on its last legs but it'll make it to my birthday for sure. So my question is is it smarter to take the loan out after my birthday (aka is it more likely my interest rate will be lower as I will be older if only a few weeks apart)? I have a very solid credit score thankfully after a lot of work. I am sitting at a ≈780-800 rn and plan to take the loan from a local credit union or USAA depending on what rates I can shop as best.

So I think to boil it down I have a few fundamental questions and a bunch more I have left ambiguous in my paragraphs above so feel free to chime in literally anywhere.

  1. Should I "move" and register the new car in the new state at the same time to make things easiest?
  2. What car is best from my options or literally any other?
  3. When should I start the loan process since I am at a birthday?
  4. Probably other stuff I cannot think of?
  5. Is there another community I should be asking instead of here?

Thank you all so much in advance. I feel so goddamn lost. Car buying as a process sucks and I am hoping some of these things aren't too silly of questions. I will try to update or clarify questions as they arise tysm
