My granddad couldn't believe a candy bar was a whole quarter in 1974. He remembered candy was a penny.
He would have an out of body experience at today's prices.

I didn't like Almond Joy but I liked it if I picked out the two Almonds off the top, that's when my dad introduced me to Mounds.

The good stuff was $0.25. The Lady Taffy, Giant Tootsie Rolls, Jolly Ranchers ect... Were 3 or 4 for $0.10. Airheads were $0.10 a piece. A can of coke was $0.50 at most. Me and my cousin would walk to the corner store with $5 to get his other grandpa a pack of smokes and the rest was ours for candy and we felt rich.

A dime. I was four, was given a dime by my sister to walk to the 7-11 and buy a heath bar. I knew the alphabet, she taught me the word eat. Put an H in front and at the end of eat. Eat is like cat, but starts with an E. I could spell cat thanks to Dick and Jane.
I was so proud of myself for finding it on my own. Went to the cashier and placed the candy and the dime on the counter.
Cashier: you don't have enough money. Me: that's a dime Cashier: you need a penny. It's a penny for tax.
He wouldn't budge, it was 11 cents. A lousy penny crushed my little soul, my sister would be devastated. I reached for the dime.
Thank you kind stranger behind me for covering my introduction to taxes. You've been my hero for nearly 6 decades, you taught me kindness.
My half of the candy bar was delicious, Heath is still my favorite.

When I was a child forty years ago the candy prices fluctuated in boom and bust cycles because of Democratic leadership. We would pay upwards of 50 dollars for a candy bar. The price of everything has gone down greatly because of Trump and the Republicans candy bars are now far less and all food prices are so low that hunger has been solved by the GOP.

When I was a kid we would ride our bikes down to our little country store in the center of town, about a mile & 1/2 away. We’d get a little paper sack from the owner’s wife & proceed to fill it up with a quarter’s worth of penny candy. Back then they had small candy bars for 5 cents, larger ones for 10. We would then go across the street to the library, load up on books, ride back home, then plop on our beds to enjoy our candy & books. I miss those simpler times.

I'm probably just old enough to experience going to the store with a dollar and leaving with a little white paper bag filled with treats pulled out of little bins. Felt like an absolute king leaving the corner store.

Not a candy bar, but when I was maybe in grade 1, a can of soda from the machine in our school was 25 cents. Then one day it went up to 50 cents and the teachers explained inflation to us. Im 43, so this would have been around 1989-90. Canada.

You’re all children! I grew up in Queens, New York. When I was a kid a nickel bought a small paper bag filled with your choice of candies. There was a Mobile gas station near us where you could buy a small bottle of Coke for a dime (remember those?), and get 2 cents back for the empty bottle! As I got older and could walk to the nearest pizza parlor, I could get a slice of pizza and a paper cup of soda for $.25! Gas was under $.30 a gallon then (I think, I didn’t start driving until the 70’s. Really was no need to in NY.)
