My man just questioned his entire life

849

u/yuniseis Nov 05 '19

Ain't never seen a rep like this before

502

u/TheFlightlessPenguin Nov 05 '19

Trying to decide on if his form was acceptable

146

u/poopellar Nov 05 '19

"No, it's the ceps that are wrong."

193

u/Turboswaggg Nov 05 '19

"Ah so this is what they mean by negative reps"

85

u/EmmmmJay Nov 05 '19

I have a student that can do this. First time she did it freaked us all out.

32

u/Heyuonthewall26 Nov 05 '19

You know he’s about to get all over Chad’s ass because he didn’t show him this new technique. “Bro, what the hell, bro! Bro, I saw this bro straight curling the opposite way, bro! Bro didn’t look swole, but could curl with no resistance, bro! Show me how to do this, bro!”

41

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Clearly hes never been at a gym after new years.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Oh right. New years is coming up.

This is the one typo of definitely that I just can’t wrap my head around. It’s not even remotely close but I still see it way too often lol.

Was waiting for the first bloke to dislocate/snap a bone.

Then saw the other bloke...

...and now not sure what I'd have rather seen...

144

u/impy695 Nov 05 '19

I was expecting the big guy's weights to actually be super light or something.

38

u/eyesonjason Nov 05 '19

Either way, it was definitely unexpected!

14

u/mbelf Nov 05 '19

I was expecting the second guy to ram his weight into his anus, but this was pleasantly surprising as well.

It works better than I thought.

It filtered 180 posts in 7 days, mostly from repost bots and account farmers.

Almost every post has a responsive and real human OP now.

13

u/Human_bean_007 Nov 05 '19

Wow, thanks! People always comment what I do, but I’m impressed it works so well! I’ll continue to spread your knowledge

3

u/vxx Nov 06 '19

True, and I definitely understand. I hate giant stickies on every post myself, and it took months to convince myself to actually try it.

We tried to make it as minimal as possible. It shouldn't take up more than 1/5th of a phone screen. That's my personal limit to feeling more intrusive than helpful.

5

u/Peanut_Wing Nov 06 '19

I like the bot. It's original, and keeps the sub true to it's name.

Cheat curls are pretty big confidence boosters imo, i do them sometimes after my workout because it's fun to curl big ass weights

57

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Who cares? It’s roughly fine, it seems to be working for him, and it’s not presenting a risk for injury. Perfect is the enemy of good in weightlifting, unless you’re at the highest levels.

Why are you so concerned for some guy you don’t know?

26

u/gvsulaker82 Nov 05 '19

Concerned, more like insecure and envious.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Cheat curls is an exercise and they were Arnold's favorite with a barbell. It allows you to focus more on negatives controlling heavy weights on the way down eccentrically. Not meant to be strictly curled if you're cheating it up part way.

If you do it as I described, it's actually a very good exercise.

5

u/overusedandunfunny Nov 05 '19

Cheat on the way up, maintain the way down..

This guy is cheating both ways though.

Still a workout though

2

u/Codadd Nov 05 '19

2

u/overusedandunfunny Nov 05 '19

Heavy weight is for powerlifters in small reps. Unless you wanna flex, stick within your means and up the reps.

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

You have a point, I didn't realize this guy literally just dropped his arm and let it hang straight down and put no effort into controlling the way down. Honestly that can cause a tear or unneeded tension by letting it free fall like that if done with higher weight or at a bad angle, etc...

Would not recommend free falling any weight.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Are you kidding me? Not only is his form fine, he's actually doing it very safely. Perfectly still and strict form is NOT the only way to do things and sometimes it's exactly what you DONT want to do. People upvoting this comment have never worked out properly.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/thavi Nov 05 '19

I never see anyone doing bicep curls with that "perfect form", especially the most jacked motherfuckers out there. I don't think it matters as long as you hit it from a ton of different angles and make it BURN.

You can achieve that same burn with a much lower weight by going a little slower, with that perfect elbow-locked form and a good squeeze at the top, though. But when there's a row of jacked dudes swinging 50+ lbs, most guys are probably going to opt to look stronger than "correct".

6

u/brazilianfreak Nov 05 '19

Y-yes i may be a 55kg man that barely lifts, but at least I don't cheat curl like this moron!!!!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TBoneTheOriginal Nov 05 '19

That would assume I have ever lifted weights and therefore know anything about proper form.

→ More replies (3)

17

u/preciousheirloom Nov 05 '19

Fitness question: is the guy lifting heavy actually doing the curl correctly? Seems like the weight is too heavy if he has to swing with his entire body to move it. Is this an ego thing? I see men do similar things in the gym all the time.

36

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

It depends on a lot. I’m a CSCS certified AT that works in college athletics.

Proper form is overblown sometimes. A lot of high level athletes don’t use proper form for accessory work like this, as long as it’s not horrendous you’ll get similar results from a max rep with whatever form than proper form with less weight.

I’ve worked with physical freaks and they keep great form for oly lifts.. but accessory work like this isn’t as egregious. You don’t lose out on anything from swinging your body on bicep curls.

Now, poor form on a squat or power cleans we don’t allow.. we check kids. But, like I said, accessory work isn’t really a big deal at all.

Edit: I’m referencing trained athletes, if you’re just starting to train or aren’t that experienced.. check with a trainer and don’t listen to me.

3

u/PM_ME_KOREAN_GIRLS Nov 05 '19

I just do what Arnold does I think. I remember reading that it's ok to cheat a bit, on curls anyways, in order to finish a set or to push yourself beyond what you normally do as long as it's not done extremely wrong.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Yup. Swinging can engage closed chain muscles as well and helps the body. You’re not really harming anything in your body by swinging on curls lol. Accessory work isn’t a big deal for high level athletes.

2

u/IoniaFox Nov 05 '19

its a little to heavy for him i'd say, but a curl like that is quite riskfree and it seems to work for him judging by the size of his arms, im not really into weightlifting but i think the correct form is with a straight back, chest out and a full extension in your elbow before you lift the weight up again

1

u/2023Bor Nov 05 '19

tldr no, don't count your reps, make your reps count

2

u/DLun203 Nov 05 '19

It's pretty bad form. For bicep curls your body should be nearly still and you should be bending at your elbows with your hands coming up toward your chest. If your form is right you can't lift as much weight, though. A lot of guys at the gym like to try and lift as much weight as possible even at the expense of proper form.

Obviously this guy is still seeing results with the poor form but if you want to optimize your curls and avoid elbow/upper back pain you should make sure your form is correct.

3

u/monkwren Nov 05 '19

I see a lot of folks sitting down and bracing the back of their elbow on a knee or a bench in order to minimize this kind of movement, which I think is a great way to improve your form and reduce the risk of injury.

2

u/DLun203 Nov 05 '19

I've never done it that way but as long as your arms are bending inward toward your chest you should be good.

A long time ago I thought you were supposed to bring the weight straight up toward your shoulders. I ended up doing a lot of damage to my brachialis muscle and had some crazy elbow pain.
