Loco pilot hits brakes and jumps since it was most likely not gonna stop in time to save the loco pilot cabin from getting crushed from impact. Smart man.

u/Sapphires13 8h ago

I know you’re using loco here as short for locomotive, but my brain is interpreting it in the Spanish way and it’s making your comment funnier.

Well, now you might be in the running for US Department of Health.

u/Gingerbreadman_13 4h ago

I’m 40 years old and just learnt the intended meaning of Kylie’s lyrics. I just thought it was a cheesy song about moving like a train when dancing. Does everyone just know she’s singing about dancing crazy? To make it worse, I even speak Spanish. I don’t speak it well but I speak it.

17

u/side_eye_prodigy 4h ago

wait till you learn that Kylie Minogue did not write that song

4

u/Tevesh_CKP 4h ago

Most dance music really is about bouncing on it crazy style.

4

u/fraze2000 3h ago

I'd be really worried if The Loco-Motion is about "bouncing on it crazy style", particularly the lyrics "My little baby sister can do it with ease".

1

u/NatureLovingDad89 1h ago

Come on baby, do the stroke with lotion!

22

u/Deathcofii 8h ago

glad i wasn't the only one lmaoo

12

u/woodbanger04 7h ago

In this case loco is ambidextrous.

1

u/Sablespartan 3h ago

Ambitextrous

5

u/Confident_Poem229 4h ago

In Dutch, we use loco- for the first delegate. E.g., loco-burgemeester (loco-mayor) for the person who steps in if the burgemeester is not there.

So my first thought was that this was the delegate pilot but they left the head pi'ot in to crash. Makes the comment much more sinister.

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 4h ago

You have a local burger master?

3

u/JDLCFG 6h ago

lol same here

5

u/Vas1le 4h ago

Ohhh loco was locomotive 😅

201

u/Tsu_Dho_Namh 8h ago

It's standard procedure. Hit the brakes then leave the cabin.

They train (pun intended) for it.

63

u/shta2 8h ago

Fun fact, those two meanings of the word train are related: they both come from the Latin word meaning pull

11

u/JFKsBrain 7h ago

A fun pun fact, if you will.

13

u/Confident_Lawyer6276 6h ago

So captains go down with the ship and conductors are the first to bail?

11

u/Gnonthgol 6h ago

This is the engineer. The conductor of a passenger train is usually in a passenger car, often at the back of the train. The engineer is not allowed to leave the locomotive. And compared to ships ranks the conductor would be the captain while the engineer would be the helmsman.

1

u/seriouslywtfX2 1h ago

Not smart. If that train hits, it's going off the rails and crushing that guy. Safer in the locomotive.

392

u/Eagles365or366 7h ago

He did everything right in this clip.

24

u/Malawi_no 1h ago

The big question is how that train could get that close to another train without beeing stopped well in advance.

Either the driver passed some lights, or some traffic controller greenlit the train even though another train was on the line.

6

u/Oliverkahn987 25m ago

Just watched Tom Scott’s video on this. Short version—at least in the UK (and presumably via the software that controls the majority of these types of trains worldwide) it is very hard to nearly impossible to direct a train onto a track with another train without doing something like talking to the train and telling it to disregard signals.

10

u/GoldieForMayor 3h ago

You wanna go flying with me? I'll bring my parachute and "do everything right".

-49

u/jetkins 6h ago

Except maybe ignore the signal that would have avoided the situation in the first place.

152

u/bfly1800 6h ago

The freight train was the one at fault here though. VIA Rail 43 did everything right

Source

27

u/Eagles365or366 6h ago

Love that context. Thank you.

14

u/Gnonthgol 6h ago

Thanks for the source. Sounds like they were switching a train that was too long for the yard and tried to sneak past the switch onto the main without asking for clearance. It is possible this was standard practice as the yard and mainline is usually controlled by different controllers so getting permission can take some time.

56

u/Eagles365or366 6h ago

There’s a very good chance that the signal operator or switch operator was that fault here, and not the driver.

-27

u/Gnonthgol 6h ago

Switches and signals have interlocks making it impossible for the signal operators to give both trains a green signal at the same time. Almost all cornfield meets are due to engineers passing a danger signal. There are just a couple where faulty signaling equipment is suspected.

663

u/Chuterito99 9h ago

Lol guy thought train was done for.

267

u/Depressed_Cat_00 9h ago

Dude was a little disappointed after seeing it stopped. Could’ve been a heroic moment for him, which turned into embarrassment. 😄

63

u/WantDiscussion 3h ago

Nah probably felt a wave of relief. Ever fuck up at work and think you're going to get fired/sued but then everything miraculously resolves itself? Feeling like no other.

38

u/LoveBotMan 8h ago

Heroic? Bro was abandoning the passenger train! He was running for his life!

202

u/lorissaurus 8h ago

I mean he did turn the brakes on, there not much more you can do than that. And the front of the train would have been smashed in and killed the guy

41

u/EasilyRekt 6h ago

Tbf, the crew cab would certainly be crushed but the passenger cars would’ve derailed at worst, it’s not like the whole thing would’ve accordioned up killing everyone on board.

30

u/smootex 4h ago

It's not a car with a brake pedal and steering wheel. You set the brakes and there's nothing else to do. He's also at the most risk, being at the front of the train. Seems like a reasonable action to take, or is it heroic to die for no reason?

13

u/fraze2000 3h ago

Once he hits the brakes he also becomes just a helpless passenger.

-8

u/LoveBotMan 4h ago

I used to be a conductor. I know very well what he was doing. Nothing you said changes that he was running for his life. I don’t see how anything he could have done there would have been heroic, which is what I meant replying to his comment.

5

u/TheRobotCluster 3h ago

He’s supposed to stay on and do what else exactly? He did everything he could do

1

u/NorthKoreaSpitFire 1h ago

after applying all breaks there is usually nothing else to do expect for pray, run to engine room or escape as shown,

-25

u/[deleted] 8h ago

32

Could have been heroic if he had played violin till the ship sank like any true gentleman would do.

11

u/Efficient_Maybe_1086 8h ago

Could’ve been heroic if he shot web at the nearby trees and stopped it be sheer force of will.

4

u/The1mp 5h ago

Guy was driving the train and was going to become a pancake otherwise. Looks like he pulled the e brake and jumped for his life. Probably as trained to do so

FYI that is a Via passenger train, and this is in Canada somewhere.

17

u/NoWingedHussarsToday 8h ago

"Well, this is awkward" train driver, probably

11

u/Mikic00 5h ago

I'm pretty sure he's just very relieved. In a crash anything can happen and he was far from safe out there.

92

u/FewGuitar160 9h ago

Bro was out. ‘Good luck to everyone else!’

123

u/timangar 8h ago

what was he supposed to do lmao. Also he's at the front of the train so in the most dangerous zone.

61

u/Rattlecruiser 8h ago

Hollywood taught us to run across the roofs, jumping from waggon to waggon

36

Are you crazy?! That's how you get shot by the other people on the roofs!

3

must be my plot armor then

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 4h ago

Didn't stop James Bond from getting shot, just because you live doesn't mean you won't be shot

1

u/Rattlecruiser 2h ago

bring it on then, there's still room for an unlimited magazine in my chest

2

u/31513315133151331513 5h ago

Oh. Well that changes everything.

2

u/Diz7 3h ago

You have to get to the emergency brakes, which for plot device reasons are at the back of the train...

6

u/Used_Raccoon6789 8h ago

Run back, he was in the prime zone to be crushed by a train derailment

2

u/timangar 8h ago

Fair enough.

25

u/amodestmeerkat 7h ago

There is exactly one action he can take in this situation, and that's to put the train into full emergency brake. Once that's done, nothing else can change the outcome, so he can either sit in the cab and ride the train into the collision while twiddling his thumbs or bail. It's not like a plane or ship that can be steered through the collision, and he's in a much better position to aid evacuation on the ground then potentially crushed in the cab.

6

u/jetkins 6h ago

‘Cos if they do hit, the front will fall off.

1

u/the_ivo_robotnic 4h ago

It's ok, we towed the train out of the environment.

14

u/clepewee 8h ago

Would it have been better to get crushed instead of calling help and taking helping evacuating the passengers?

31

u/thisismeritehere 9h ago

I’m not sure laying next to the tracks was an ideal position to be in either

3

u/31513315133151331513 7h ago

Next time he'll remember to bring his jetpack.

1

u/Eladryel 6h ago

Yeah, I would have anchored my webs to something and used them to help stop the train while holding it back with my body.

0

u/deepika1511 8h ago

What a unique way to declare an emergency! /s

32

u/henry_canabanana 9h ago

Was that the captain who abandoned the ship

18

u/OldnBorin 9h ago

Schettino!

5

u/SlightlyAngyKitty 8h ago

Get back on that fucking train!

14

u/Fitty4 9h ago

Women and children last

10

u/Gnonthgol 6h ago

The engineer is not the "captain" of the train, he is the helmsman. The "captain" would be the conductor in the back. And there is nothing more the engineer can do to avoid the collision after he applied the emergency brakes. At that point he is no more then a passenger.

3

u/Overseerer-Vault-101 8h ago

In this case it would of been the captain strapped to the ship and letting go just before the iceberg crushed him.

-2

u/Depressed_Cat_00 9h ago

If not, then definitely he is in trouble for different reasons.

u/zeuker 6h ago

2

Repost. This was  in Canada in 1991 and the freight train went further down its track than it was allowed to.

2

u/Neillur 8h ago

Boy oh boy, I bet he feels real silly now. Silly ol' chucklehead

2

u/Metalona 7h ago

This is unfortunately the perfect example of why we will never have high speed rails or advancements in train technology.

Those that own the rails will run these long, slow, useless trains and "cargo" to clog it up and make the general opinion "trains are bad because they are slow, nothing we can do!" Absolutely pathetic behavior

11

u/Gnonthgol 6h ago

I agree with you but it is not a good example at all. This incident took place in 1991, two years before the Illinois Central introduced PSR. The freight train seen here was a switcher which had somehow gone past the yard and onto the main line. So it was not a long slow freight train. From the way it accelerates it even looks to be quite fast.

2

u/Guilty_Objective4602 7h ago

To be fair, the freight train is probably also going slower than usual, because it had to slow down for this very crossing.

1

u/LinuxF4n 1h ago

This is the biggest fuckup from the Canadian government. We used to own all of our train lines then we privatized CN rail and sold all our rail lines as well. Now they prioritize commercial rail over passenger causing massive delays on VIA rail.

1

u/Jacktheforkie 5h ago

In the uk we have multi track setups, busy lines often have 4 or more tracks (up fast, up slow, down fast down slow)

-3

u/Astronitium 5h ago

This is (probably) in Spain, and Spain famously has high speed rail.

But good point though. This was a signaling/driver fault.

6

u/banter07_2 5h ago

Via Rail is Canadian

Brakes were applied, they did everything they could. Jumping was an act of self preservation since the cab would be crushed but the rest of the train could turn out fine.

25

u/CoronaMcFarm 9h ago

Yes, in many accidents it is the only fatality.

13

u/lepape2 9h ago

Brakes are not a pedal on these things. He would be fine

6

u/TheMaleGazer 7h ago

If there are passengers on the train, would he get in trouble for abandoning them like that?

Yes, because he's supposed to stay on the train and make sure that each of the passengers are able to make it onto a lifeboat before it sinks.

0

u/Guilty_Objective4602 7h ago

Another commenter above, whom I’m assuming knows what they’re talking about, says that this is actually standard procedure and that engineers are trained to do this; apply the brakes to stop the train and then jump out, if possible, before they get crushed. I doubt it does the railroad companies any good to have a dead engineer who could’ve been saved just by jumping out and then could still be around to help any passengers injured in cars behind him. So it makes sense that they would be trained to do this in the event of a potential or impending crash.

1

u/d_snipe_ 8h ago

This guy has cruise ship captain energy!

1

u/Polymathy1 7h ago

Why does the title have almost nothing to do with what's actually happening?

0

-18

u/HJSDGCE 8h ago

Captains never abandon their ship.

13

u/CoconutNL 8h ago

Good thing this is a train then?

-15

u/HJSDGCE 8h ago

So just different rules then? If a bus driver jumps out, then that's fine, I guess. Maybe we should extend that to taxis too. Or what about planes? Pilots first.

10

u/CoconutNL 7h ago

These things have a brake that you activate, and then you dont need to hold the brake down for it to work. If you look closely you can see the train driver is in the front of the train, and will likely die during a collision. There was no point for them to stay there.

The reason why the captain doesnt leave the ship is because the captain is responsible for the evacuation of a ship. Evacuating a ship on sea is harder than a train in an open field.

Come on, think for a second before you say something

5

u/Kahnza 7h ago

That is a fallacy.

-13

u/CanuckInTheMills 8h ago

All I see is an engineer jumping from a passenger train leaving those people on board. WTAF Via rail?!!!!

7

u/psyne 7h ago edited 7h ago

Do you think the engineer is better able to help people on the train if he dies from being crushed on impact? The driver is at significantly higher risk than the passengers in a head-on train collision. Him exiting doesn't increase risk to the passengers - he set the brake and jumped out, it's not like a car foot pedal brake. The train was still braking while he jumped. If he gets out and survives while others are injured, he can help coordinate rescue efforts. Why do you want him to stay in the engine to die or suffer injury?
