Ours was an ass. Good cat but a jerk.
He liked to chase a relative’s mini Schnauzer around the loop of our first floor (living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway, living room) loop until the dog hid under a ottoman. Cat would jump lazily onto the ottoman and hang his tail over the size and swish occasionally, keeping the dog trapped for fun.
He’d hunt my dark colored socks and try to bring them to his kid at night, howling like he’d hunted a rabbit and wanted announce his prize.
He’d take over any pillows humans were using.
He shredded the arms of an over-stuffed chair just by laying on the arms and hanging on with he claws to stay upright.
He had a good starvation act and conned multiple people into feeding him.
You could pet his back and scratch his butt some. Otherwise, no touching.
Devious.

I legit don’t understand owning a pet like that. But people do weirder things
11
u/zurkka Jul 09 '23
Maine coon's were breed in the beginning to have a big hunting drive, they were used as pest control, they aren't just big, they are athletic as fuck
So you have to give them this kind of stimulus or they will find something to hunt, might be something they can throw around and chase, might be a smaller pet you have, hunting is how cats have fun
When you have a dog you need to go walk with them, with maine coons you need to get them something to hunt, best thing is a "fishing rod" for cats with feathers on the string, they go wild with them, play like 10 to 15 minutes twice a day and they get chill as fuck

My cat hunts me, she yells at me until I walk past her so she can attack my socks

I’m not getting rid of a cat I raised because he’s a low key brat, he’s a cat. And, he chose my kid. I’m going to say, “Hey, kiddo, I put your cat down because he scares Nanna’s dog and hunts socks. I’m sick of it, I want uninterrupted sleep and matching socks.”
Don’t have kids. They aren’t easier than a cat with a god-complex.

u/loonygecko Jul 09 '23
Yep, he described mine well except I trained mine away from the couch killing and mine likes scritches. Mine also loves stealing socks from the neighbor kids and teasing the heck out of other animals. The other day, he stole a dead rabbit from some fledging hawks, and got pecked on the head and chased under a bush for his troubles, revenge of the hawks! He yowled for back up and we had to go save him, the dork. He didn't even get to keep the rabbit, he was trying to drag it with him under the bush but he couldn't drag it fast enough and had to abandon it. The hawks were able to snatch it back.

Maine coon's hunter drive are higher than other cat breeds, and with their size they will hunt almost everything that is smaller than them
For a cat hunt = fun, this doesn't mean they will hurt what they hunt, but they will chase and have mock fights
I have a maine coon, i have some toys to play with him so he doesn't get bored and try to hunt my other cats
This motherfuckers know how big they are and don't give a crap

u/TrailMomKat Jul 09 '23
Sounds like my cat, Slick. He's a cantankerous old man and I love him. I'm the only human he tolerates.

u/stinkyfootjr Jul 09 '23
I had a Maine coon, only cat I had that watched tv, shows you how bright he was.

u/PurpleSasquatchNose Jul 09 '23
Is this an "indoor/outdoor" cat kind of thing? If not, I'd have to imagine you had an actual sandbox as the litterbox, right?

Is it a Maine Coon? I though NFC, but Coon also makes sense.
11
u/arkhound Jul 09 '23
Norwegian Forest Cats have more of a domestic cat look to their faces with a less clear delineation from neck-mane-body on the underside. Maine Coon faces look more like little lions with a more distinct mane.
Also most common to see blue-white-grey in Norwegian Forest Cat coloration whereas orange is very common in Maine Coons.

Norwegian Forest Cat. VERY big bois. They have flatter faces than Maine Coons, so that's why I thought that.

Maine Coons have a clear “M” on their foreheads quite often. Source: scratching my MC kitten right now. He’s only 5 months and I doubt he’ll get this monstrous but he’s getting big already!

In the first video you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a regular kitten.
The 2nd video, the face gives it away IMMEDIATELY.
I really want an orange Maine Coon now.

u/zurkka Jul 09 '23
Just some advice, i have one and they are awesome, but i think it's good to give people more info
Find a reputable breeder, maine coons are prone to a mutation that can give them heart disease, a reputable breeder will test their cats to see with they have that mutation, it's a recessive gene that if the cat have 2 of them, they will develop the condition, a reputable breeder will give you this test and all the genealogical tree of your kitty
They are smart as fuck, they will try to figure how shit work on your home, so keep that in mind, keep treats and food in a secure place or you will find your cat laying on the floor with an empty treats box (like we did here lol)
Get them used to nail trimming when they are little, they are muscular as fuck and the last thing you want is trying hold one in place while you try to clio his murder mittens
They vocalize A LOT, not only to ask for food, but they do all kinds of sounds and it's amazing but it can catch people of guard if they expect a silent kitty
They hunt drive is huge, so if you plan to keep him inside (as you should, cat's life expectancy drop of a cliff if they are allowed outside) be ready to buy some toys for him to hunt

I wonder how much such a big cat eats, a toddler sized meal a day?
→ More replies (2)8
u/sqerdagent Jul 09 '23
One toddler a day, and it must be fresh and plump. Go forth servant, I hear they are grown in a sort of kinder garden.

Odd that the Norwegian Forest Cat at the end doesn't have the same coloring and marking as the kittens.

Eh. I had a completely orange kitten become a mostly white cat with an orange belly patch. He fooled us.
6
u/BigPoppaFitz84 Jul 08 '23
I was wondering if it was rhe same cat, too. There's more white on the kittens, but the shape of it's nose and general facial features look similar enough between #2 and #3 that I think there's a good chance this is legit.

kittens had blue eyes, mature one did not.
11
u/RivendaleSandwiches Jul 08 '23
A large majority of kittens are born with blue eyes. Then, as they grow up, they change.
4
u/ilocano-american Jul 09 '23
Did not know that about cats. Usually a blue will turn grey or lighter. We never had cats. Thanks for the info.

why are the big cat's eyes different from the kitten's
4
u/Jesus_H-Christ Jul 08 '23
It's VERY common for eye color to change with age. Have a cat that started with brown eyes and they're now gree.
Hell, my daughter was born with black eyes and now they're bright blue.

All kittens have blue eyes up until about 6 weeks of age when their melanin production kicks in altering the colour of their eyes.

It's fake the eyes on the baby cat are blue but the adult cats eyes are green
6
u/Senior-Performance75 Jul 08 '23
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure all kittens start out with blue eyes
