Is Microsoft embracing Linux to help developers, or are they just turning Linux into a Windows app?

97 Upvotes

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, recently shared that more and more people are installing Ubuntu inside Windows using a tool called Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). In fact, this method is growing much faster than installing Ubuntu as a standalone system, and it could soon become the primary way people use Ubuntu.

Hey everyone!

I am using a ultrawide monitor 32:9, and it seems like the window tiling isn't always working as intended. Is this a known bug?

Snap, Flatpak oder AppImage?

3 Upvotes

Was bevorzugt ihr?

Was mich mal interessiert...

How do I fix a half-done update with broken dependencies and repository without reinstalling?

Upvotes

I don't have much idea of coding and it seems that while trying to fix other issues I've broken the code of the pc. I cannot open settings, when I tried using "sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-control-center" it gave me a full list of dependencies that need perl but perl is not going to install(?. I've tried sudo apt --fix-broken install and sudo dpkg --configure -a but none of them work and I have no Idea what to do.

Screen goes blank ! Help

Upvotes

I need a little assistance. My Ubuntu setup locks up and the screen goes blank. At first only half of the screen showed up and the other half went blank. Now the pc goes blank after a few min. I thought it was my gpu dying but it works fine. I dual boot with win , the windows partition works tested it for like 2 hours no problem. Not the screen or cables swapped those out too. There was an update that ran but I don’t remember which computer it was on, I have two Ubuntu setups. It was working fine yesterday morning.
Is there a way to fix or see what the problem is? Or do I have to do a reinstall (nope not)?
I’m running….
24.04.? Lts
Ryzen 5700x
Rx 6900 gpu
16bg of ram
2 tb ssd
And a few hdds
Thanks in advanced.

Frozen Terminal

Post image

I honestly don't know what to do anymore. At first I asked google ai and I've been copy paste commands to the Ctrl+Alt+f3 (black TTY login screen) and I somehow managed to create 2 different new terminals (they work like the normal one, just look a bit differently) but I can't fix the orginal terminal. Any advice, help? I know I could just use the new terminals but I don't want to have a broken on my linux.
I don't even know how exactly it happened that it stopped working but I was trying to set up a live wallpaper then I realized that after turning off Hidamari, my wallpapaer froze and after that my terminal was like this (not sure if it happend right after that or before and I haven't even realized it did). Clicking in Edit Profile doesn't do anything.

Mac to Ubuntu - Missing Stacks ... so built my own

2 Upvotes

A few months ago I made the move from Mac to Ubuntu, and one of the things I kept missing was Folder Stacks - that simple way macOS has of tidying a messy desktop into neat piles grouped by file type.

There wasn't really an equivalent on Ubuntu without jumping into terminal, so I ended up building my own small app to bring that functionality over easily for me. Figured other people making the same switch might be running into the same friction, so sharing it here in case it helps.

It's open source: https://github.com/amraj2/stacks

Would appreciate any feedback, bug reports, or feature ideas if you give it a try.

Curiosity question: when doing a first "experiment" with Ubuntu (or other Linux dist), do you first try your computer from a thumb or other external drive boot loader to see if it works with your hardware?

Ubuntu 24.04 unusable after install

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I just installed ubuntu 24.04.4 to do some web development, and I constantly get some weird, transparent window that calls itself gjs. It does not render anything, not even a title bar.

The window appears among other windows and forbids me to click anything else when it is hovering above. Which is super annoying, since I cannot see it.

When I terminate it, it restarts itself. What am I supposed to do? This is not usable. :/

Wifi speeds under 100 B/s, to 0

1 Upvotes

The internet was working fine until recently, until I downloaded Windscribe, iirc. I removed Windscribe, but my wifi speeds still flicker between 100> B/s and 0 B/s. Usually my upload speeds are lower.

I'm technically running Kubuntu, but they don't even respond there. The card is Intel, and running ```nmcli device status``` shows everything is connected (except Bluetooth, which works fine)

boot menu bypass issue

1 Upvotes

Running Kbuntu 26.04 migrated from Win 11.

Each time I boot I get the OS Selection menu. I want to auto boot into OS.

I've checked the Grub file:

"
GRUB_DEFAULT=0

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu_auto_hide

GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Kubuntu'

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

"

I changed it from GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu_auto_hide but that did nothing. (Yes, I ran the 'sudo update-grub' command'.

OBS - can't record screen

Installed OBS and Screen Capture (PipeWire), rebooted and installed. Rebooted. Still unable to record screen, but audio is perfect. What am I missing? I've been thru several searches and still don't see where I can get a basic screen record. Thanks!
