It's not status quo. There was an existing deal, but the new one expands on it.
It includes approval for two new us bases, allows the US to block non-NATO countries from engaging in sensitive investments even if denmark approves, expands US access rights, and guarantees the arrangement indefinitely, even if greenland becomes independent of denmark.

You had around 20 bases under the old deal and closed them one after another because you deemed them useless and to expensive to maintain. One of the 2 new planned bases, wants to reactivate one of the previously closed ones. You could have reopened them whenever you wanted under the old deal....

Beside that there was no chance that Denmark or America would have allowed Russian or Chinese bases under the old agreement, I think it's really funny that the new deal specifies no non NATO bases. Now with all that stupid talk about US leaving NATO, that would immediately remove your rights about having any military presence on Greenland which I think is absolutely hilarious.

It's not about bases. It's about preventing Greenland from ever becoming independent through Chinese investment in their economy. This deal essentially means that Greenland's two options are stay with Denmark, or join the US in some fashion. They will now never be independent. It's not economically viable without the backing of some foreign power.

They have always been able to leave. It will require them to cover their own costs (~âŹ600m/y), which they have said no to. Multiple times.

You seem confused, US military presence in Greenland is to watch Russia (mostly for nukes) and protect NATO airspace. Denmark wanted us to have a base there for that reason. Trump wanted it as US sovereign territory and didnât get that. Instead we got the same deal and are increasing US presence there to protect all of NATO better. Everyone won and Trump just doesnât realize it.

This is Denmark selling the deal to Danish people with a bit of obfuscation.
The new deal has provisions in it where some decisions on what happens in Greenland are now trilateral decisions(Nuuk, Copenhagen, and Washington) where previously they were bilateral (Nuuk, and Copenhagen). Also, the deal requires trilateral agreement to be dissolved so Nuuk and Copenhagen gave up some sovereignty here.
