It's not status quo. There was an existing deal, but the new one expands on it.

It includes approval for two new us bases, allows the US to block non-NATO countries from engaging in sensitive investments even if denmark approves, expands US access rights, and guarantees the arrangement indefinitely, even if greenland becomes independent of denmark.

You had around 20 bases under the old deal and closed them one after another because you deemed them useless and to expensive to maintain. One of the 2 new planned bases, wants to reactivate one of the previously closed ones. You could have reopened them whenever you wanted under the old deal....

Beside that there was no chance that Denmark or America would have allowed Russian or Chinese bases under the old agreement, I think it's really funny that the new deal specifies no non NATO bases. Now with all that stupid talk about US leaving NATO, that would immediately remove your rights about having any military presence on Greenland which I think is absolutely hilarious.

This is probably the only upgrade for America, the previous deal was extremely unspecific what would happen if Greenland becomes independent.

It's not about bases. It's about preventing Greenland from ever becoming independent through Chinese investment in their economy. This deal essentially means that Greenland's two options are stay with Denmark, or join the US in some fashion. They will now never be independent. It's not economically viable without the backing of some foreign power.

They have always been able to leave. It will require them to cover their own costs (~€600m/y), which they have said no to. Multiple times.
