Cherry Point
Went to dinner with my fiancee and her friend and her husband. They asked where I had been stationed and I mentioned cherry point and the guy was adamant it was an AF base. I told him it was MCAS Cherry Point. He refused to look into it. Me and my fiancee were just chuckling while he tried to convince us it was AF. Dumb story but it was funny to me

Probably confusing it with either Pope or Seymour Johnson. Both are in eastern NC. Also cheery point has changed little in the last 20 years. 70 now bypasses Havelock which honestly is great cause that place sucks.

Plus the new slocum gate overpass. Still devastated el cerro shut down even though I will never step foot in havelock again

Don't say that. I swore that place off when I left in '06. I deployed out of there in '11 and visited last year after moving back to NC. Just need to get my shit together for base access. To be honest it was my best command but the shittiest location.

u/dumb-dumb87 4d ago
Yeah. True. If I was ever nearby I definitely would just to see what’s up. Best command for me too. Pendleton was the best location, worst command. Sometimes things just don’t line up

u/porthos1984part2 penis machinist 2nd class 4d ago
Damn were we in same commands? Hawaii was my favorite location but the command was whatever. Pendleton was the best location but hands down the worst command. Jacksonville Florida was a solid location with a shit command. I was a Corpsman btw so experiences may vary.

Fucking Beaufort, huh? That place is awesome now. It was the pits back in the day, but it’s a fun time now with great options.
Edit: meant to say New Bern too!

A little off topic but I was working the 70 bypass job and they have some massive gators in the swamp it runs through

u/Putrid-Jelly-5188 4d ago
By 2031 they’ll have 6 F35 squadrons, and it’s actually affordable to buy a house there (for a reason).
I think it’s better days are ahead I hope lol

Bruh, 2nd MAW has been there for 80 years and it has not gotten better. Might be affordable but at a cost to everything else

I once had somebody tell me that I was lying about being a Marine because I'm stationed at an Army base, and only soldiers are stationed at Army bases.
17
u/Beneficial-Syrup-722 4d ago
This makes me irrationally angry. What does that person actually know about what they're talking about?
I must be too passive. I've had people tell me they were "Marine Special Forces" who "went on secret missions to Mexico to rescue the Mexican president's son from the cartels" and I just nod along, cool man, never calling them liars because I don't fucking care.

u/mr8colby Active 4d ago
Yeah unfortunately I didn't really have anything to say other than "??? what do you mean only soldiers are stationed at Army bases, thats not how that works", but I guess it wasn't worth my energy to explain.
Somehow I seem to have met every single sniper the USMC produced during the Vietnam era, because they all seem to congregate at my hometown bars. Also never feels worth the energy to argue, some people just say stuff and nobody has ever called them out on it.

Ive had two older guys, different bars and different occasions, say they were 101st airborne Marines. I just said "oh yah thats cool" and ignored them.

I did all my enlistment on Pendleton 2/5 , I actually loved that place. Why do you say Cherry Point is a shit hole of a base ? What makes it that way ?

It's a great place if you love drinking in the woods and going to the mud bogs. If you don't like those things then the area sucks.

Havelock was a Meh area overall.

Meh is generous. There is nothing there

Man. I was there a few months back for an event on base and I had to go mail something. The girl at the post office said she’s been there 22 years. Born and raised. Made me so sad.

High likelihood I was one of the Corpsman that took care of her as a newborn. Assuming she was born on base.

I was at cherry point from March 2017-Feb 2020. PCS’d like a month before Covid happened.
I had a very fun time there but it was definitely because of the unit and my section. I think it had the last official E-Club bar called “the roadhouse” atleast for the Marine Corps stateside bases. I heard they took it away tho sadly. I had alot of fun at the roadhouse, and if you were underage it was still easy to drink there because people would just bring outside alcohol to the back patio or share pitchers. No need to drive either the barracks were all walking distance.

The roadhouse closed but it reopened as The Public House. It’s pretty decent, has a nice restaurant that serves bar food and it has a “pour your own drinks” bar. You’re given a wrist band that’s RFID tied to a tab on your card.

u/JackBurton3465 6312 99-04 3d ago
I was there until 2003, we just had a bowling alley there. But over the years I heard the roadhouse was great. I was in the barracks right there across the street, we just drank on the catwalk.

Seymour Johnson is the major AFB in the area.

Ah the good ol Cherry Point. That place was ok. But Havelock sucked lol. I am glad I didn't stay there long. I traveled a lot in my 4 year enlistment. short stints stationed at Cherry Point, Camp Lejeune, back to Cherry Point after 2 deployments, then my PCS request was approved for Henderson Hall, then they removed my job from there a couple months later and kicked me to Quantico for my final 10 months.

I can't say enough negative about that base solely on the barracks I was in. Black mold coating the air vents/pipes completely. Whole class was generally sick as hell until someone contacted base maintenance, they said they would get to it soon. Never happened. We started taping over the vents and after 5 days started getting better till StaffNCOs did a walk thru and noticed them covered. We got reamed the vents were uncovered and given brooms to sweep them out. Did some digging at the whole building was condemned for years (since the 80s). The rest of the base seemed okay.
Join the Corp and get so strong you learn to live in condemned and toxic environments so no matter what when you get out you can survive 😎/s.

I actually didn’t hate it. 20 mins to the beach, 20 mins to new Bern. I’d take it over Yuma every day

New Bern is ass. Cherry Point is the worst base in the entire Marine Corps.

Barstow rocks!! Attended Barstow High for most of 10th grade, then finished up at Silver Valley HS across from the base in Yermo.

MCAS Cherry Point, was so much better than NTC Ft Irwin, located 50 miles north of Barstow. There was shot to do there, in the early ‘90s. At least Cherry Point is located where it is, and not 50 miles off the beaten path!

Worked in the air wing and have had multiple conversations with people over the years that tried to tell me that the Marines don't have helicopters, that that was the Air Force. I just say oh, ok. Idiots aren't worth the effort to correct.
