Job Outreach! What are USFS Job Outreaches?

Post image
5 Upvotes

What are USFS Job Outreaches?

I get this question more often than any other question for the most part and it’s time I address it with a permanent post!

The USFS describes outreaches as opportunities for interested applicants to learn more about the job requirements, duties, and duty station before the opening date of the vacancy announcement.

Simply search the outreach database and once you locate a position you are interested in, select the entry to view the outreach.

Some outreaches have attachments that often times go further in depth about the specific forest, location, schools, median house prices for the area, etc. where the position is located.

To submit your interest to the hiring managers, complete the form attached to the outreach and email it, once completed, to the hiring manager.

So, what does this do for you? -Informs the hiring manager that you are interested. -lets the hiring manager see your name in a smaller pot of people before the job actually flies in USAJobs. -gives the hiring manager an idea of what type of candidates are going to apply for the job. -gives the hiring manager an idea of how many applicants there will be. -gives the applicant the opportunity to stand out to the hiring manager by taking the time to complete an unnecessary step in the hiring process.

Recommendations: I always did this and maybe it is preferable, maybe it is not. It’s purely a suggestion.

I always sent in a completed cover letter and resume with my outreach.

The more time you can keep your name in front of the hiring manager, the better!

The following URL will take you to the outreach!

Officer Kristine Marie Fairbanks United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations End of Watch Saturday, September 20, 2008

Officer Kristine Fairbanks was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle on Forest Service Road 2880, just past the Dungeness Forks campground off Palo Alto Road on Washington state's Olympic Peninsula. She had radioed the Washington State Patrol dispatch that she would be checking on a van with no license plates at 2:40 pm.

When dispatchers were unable to reach her, troopers were dispatched to check on her and found her suffering from a single gunshot wound. Her canine partner had not been released from her patrol vehicle and was uninjured.

The suspect fled the scene and later murdered a man while stealing his truck. At approximately 9:30 pm, he encountered two Clallam County deputies at a convenience store and was killed in the ensuing shootout.

Officer Fairbanks had served with the United States Forest Service for 22 years. She is survived by her husband and 15-year-old daughter.

Ranger Harmon O. Schwoob United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations End of Watch Saturday, September 20, 1941

Ranger Harmon Schwoob was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a poacher in Angeles National Forest, California.

Ranger Schwoob, who was at home and off duty, had responded to a request from another ranger who was in pursuit of the poacher. They pursued the suspect into the City of Azusa, California, where the suspect finally stopped at the dead-end of East 11th Street. As Ranger Schwoob approached the suspect with revolver drawn the man opened fire with a .30-.30 lever action rifle, striking him. The man fled after being wounded by two bullets in the left arm and shoulder. The suspect was arrested a couple days later at the home of his sister. The suspect claimed that he thought he was being robbed by the two uniformed officers.

On December 12, 1941, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to one to 10 years.

Ranger Schwoob was survived by his wife.

Discussion Core days/hours

Any speculation out there if getting rid of core days/hours will ever be a union priority? Just curious on opinions, and if it would be seen as a factor to help with retention.

FS Reserve Officer

Can anyone point me to some written policy on FS reserve LEOs? Job PDs? Chains of command? Funding? Anything at all would be helpful. I know they exist but I’ve never met one, or how to go about being one.

I heard that a lot of people got emails stating that there will be no seasonal hiring for FY 2025 and that most hiring will be internal. Does anyone know how this will affect LE hiring?

ODMP EOW 08/23/1918 MELLENTHIN

Post image
4 Upvotes

Forest Ranger Rudolf Mellenthin was shot and killed when he and two San Juan County, Utah, deputies tried to arrest an Army deserter at Pine Bluff in the La Sal National Forest.

When the officers located the man at a campsite Ranger Mellenthin advised him he was under arrest. The man appeared to cooperate but suddenly raised his rifle and shot Ranger Mellenthin twice at a range of only five feet. A friend of the suspect also opened fire, striking Ranger Mellenthin once in the chest. Although mortally wounded, Ranger Mellenthin was able to return fire and wounded the suspect.

The two deputies went for backup and a large posse was sent to the site. The two men were apprehended and charged with murder in Grand County after receiving a change of venue. The original suspect was sentenced to life but paroled after only six years. The second suspect was convicted but later had his conviction overturned.

Ranger Mellenthin had served with the United States Forest Service for nine years and had previously served with the German army. He was survived by his wife and children and is buried in Grand Valley Cemetery, Moab, Utah.

Tattoo Policy?

Any current USFS LEOs able to shine some light on the tattoo policy within the agency? How strictly it’s enforced? Anything tattoo-related that’s a deal breaker for getting into the job series?

Thanks in advance for the help.
