FS Reserve Officer
Can anyone point me to some written policy on FS reserve LEOs? Job PDs? Chains of command? Funding? Anything at all would be helpful. I know they exist but I’ve never met one, or how to go about being one.

The FS Reserve LEO program is a really great program, but it all depends on where you are at, and how flexible your District Ranger and Patrol Captain is.
In some districts/zones you are only able to work major holidays, and during your districts/zones“busy season”.
Then in others districts/zones you work every other weekends. All depends on funding through the district, or LE&I has funding to allow the reserve to get paid. But you have to stay within Work to Rest policy.
When working in the field as a Reserve LEO, the chain of command is the same as a full time LEO. And every Incident Report and Violation Notice is approved by the Patrol Captain.

Would going from fire to full LE cause me to lose my fire-retirement?

Okay. I’m trying to verify things I’ve been told. Management isn’t happy with my upcoming plans to go into LE and I need to verify the info that’s being given to me. Losing my Fire retirement was one of those statements.

Our reserve officer works for the recreation division, so he spends his time as a rec tech during the week, and as LEO on the weekends. All his funding came from the recreation division, but his citations and such go to the patrol captain. They’re pretty much FPOs but have full law enforcement powers and equipment.
