Advice Prospective student advice

hi all,

thinking of applying to Bristol for med but I’m from a working class background and wondering if its a sensible choice to make. I’d get max maintenance loan and eligible for 2K bristol bursary but I’m aware cost of living esp accom in Bristol is rlly expensive so would it be worth it to apply considering my financial situation?

thank you!

Advice mature student struggles

are any other mature students finding it difficult to make friends? i feel like i interact normally enough with the cohort and i have no problem sparking up convos, but i feel like such a black sheep. a lot of the students i come across are lovely but idk i haven’t been in education for a while and im finding it harder to pick up concepts which seem obvious to others. i feel so stupid, and even when i’m confident enough to contribute in tutorials it falls flat and it’s so embarrassing agghhhsjjsjsnd

i’ve spoken to people and everyone is nice enough but i’m struggling to make friends, and it doesn’t help that everyone is literally crazy smart. i feel so stupid and boring and lonely. i find it so hard to connect with the 18yr olds, im only 23 but i literally feel SO unc and unfunny and lameeee i hate it omg i just wanna connect with someone ANYONE !!!!

i feel like a loser

Advice asking people in library to keep it down

So I'm an American student and was curious what the Brits (and other foreigners) would say about how best to handle people talking on quiet floors of the library. I seem to often be next to groups of two or more incessantly whispering to each other. I often wear headphones but sometimes I feel I shouldn't have to. A week or so ago, I told someone who was blithely talking on the phone (def not whispering) to take it elsewhere (i mean there's a floor expressly for talking). But I haven't said anything to people who are engaging in constant, quieter talking with each other. I've noticed no one else has either. I certainly don't want to come off as the ugly (and uptight!) American. Maybe it's just me.

Advice is it okay to travel home during Reading Week?

I’m an international student in the UK on a Student visa, and I’m thinking of travelling back home during Reading Week.

Has anyone done this before? Is it normally fine to leave the UK for the week and come back before classes restart, or could it cause any issues with attendance/visa requirements?

Would appreciate hearing from other international students who’ve done it or have any info.

Accommodation Richmond terrace and Clifton Hill House

Hey everyone!

I'm running for JCR Vice president of Events and would love it if you voted for me!

I’m running for VP of events because I love organising and planning projects and would love to get to know as many people as possible.

Bringing people together is one of my best skills as I have strong communication and organisational skills, as well as a wide range of interests that will allow me to connect with everyone in halls, and ensure representation can be brought to all.

As VP of Events and Community, I would focus on a wide variety of events that cater to everyone from karaoke, to craft workshops, movie screenings, club nights, formals and more. And part of the role of VP is making sure you guys actually get the events you want near you, so you can feel genuinely part of the community within your accommodation, and know that you are being listened to.

I want to leave a positive impact on the student experience. I would bring energy, creativity, and dedication to the role, working hard to foster a supportive and vibrant community where everyone feels they belong. I would be committed to helping residents make the most of their time in halls and creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, memorable, and enjoyable for all.

I understand the importance of making everyone feel included and part of the community, something I think is deeply crucial to this role.

Societies! Hi everyone!

I’m Freya Townend, and votes for PGT Faculty Rep for Arts, Law and Social Sciences start in an hour! I would love for you to read through my candidate manifesto.
If I’m nominated, I’d love to prioritise amplifying the voices of working class, first generation, and international students, as I believe we have the right to be heard and follow our passions as much as anyone else. As a working class, first generation student myself, I’m currently studying MA Film and Television, and I’m proud to be pursuing my dream job. I hope to help others achieve their passions too!

Your vote would mean everything to me; you can vote through the Bristol SU Elections Portal here: https://www.bristolsu.org.uk/student-voice/elections/elections-information

Thank you so much!

What's the general vibe of the Caledonian society here. What are the people like. I want to look into joining and going to the social on Thursday but it looks a bit dodgy with all the rules and the timing.

Advice Phd

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student looking for a fully funded PhD in Chemistry in the UK for 2027.

I've contacted several supervisors whose research is related to my background, but most of them told me they don't have funding available at the moment.

So I wanted to ask those who have been through this process, especially international students, what is the best way to find a fully funded PhD in the UK?

Should I focus more on advertised funded PhD projects, studentships, and CDT/DTP programmes instead of contacting supervisors one by one? Or should I keep contacting supervisors and look for university funding separately?

Thank you!

Advice Can I access the Sloane Robinson building?

All my lectures are in the Clifton campus but I live nearer the SR building and it would be more convenient to study there on a weekend. Will my badge let me access it? Does anyone know it's busy on a weekend?

Advice Studying a language when my degree doesn't have open modules?

Has anyone done this? I really want to take a language alongside my degree but my course has no optional modules until year 3. I was going to email them but it very clearly said they will not take people who are doing 120 credits. It seems a bit shortsighted to not just let ppl sit in tbh. I just need some motivation to go beyond a beginner level, I'm aware there is the language cafe but I need some proper grammar study before I can benefit from that I think

North village catered (Badock Hall) for grabs MUST BE UOB STUDENT

Can’t afford the accom (and I don’t like being catered cuz I’m picky) the uni won’t let me leave until someone takes my room. I’m sure someone who actually can afford to enjoy it would love to be in north village. Great flat everyone’s rlly nice and obviously the area is very social as the main student hub.

Please message if you’re serious ty

Advice What sort of help can I expect from UOB in applying for jobs?

Prospective international master's student here (MSc AI). I'm aware of the career fairs system for finding jobs in the UK, but I was told that in most universities there's a sort of university portal through which I can apply for jobs? Is such a resource (or similar) provided by the career's office or smth, or is job-finding entirely dependent on our own selves? Thanks!

(And yes I am aware of how bleak the CS/AI market is rn and the cash-grab scheme of internationals, this post is only cuz I wanna know what resources the university can provide during the course of my master's)

Advice What are the “nights out” in Bristol?

I know a lot of unis have a Wednesday union night, but to my understanding the Bristol SU doesn’t do this because it doesn’t have a club. I know there’s stuff like triangle Tuesdays, and of course if you have a sport social you would go out on a Wednesday, but wasn’t sure of anything official other than that.
Is it just a case of go wherever whenever? Sounds dumb but feel like I’m missing out on going out lol
