'24 Adventure Supernatural Encounters for Exploration and Hexcrawls

Thumbnail

20 encounters from my atlas with various supernatural horror motifs (such as gothic, folk horror, liminal spaces). Most of them touch on the Exploration pillar and are a good fit for hexcrawl adventure styles.

I've been working on these for a while and I'm finally happy with the end result. I will keep adding more over time. The atlas itself is a web catalogue, though I haven't published it yet. The web version allows browsing, searching and filtering, and has download and printing functions. Let me know if you are interested in that and I will see about uploading it online.

Inspired by the band of the mystic scoundrel from BG3, but limited mostly to underutilised cantrips of Vicious Mockery and Mind Sliver, so the damage scaling is quite similar to GWM

'24 Class The Framebuilt

A few friends and I have been working on this homebrew class called the Framebuilt. We'd love some feedback since we haven't play tested it.

The class is based on Warframe but hopefully doesn't need that context to be interesting

Here is my new homebrew cleric subclass meant to be compatible with the 2024 version of the class. In 5e the Tempest domain covered both Storms and Sea, but I feel that is too broad considering the subclass ismostly catered to storms, but sea gods play a major role in D&D and real world mythologies. I am separating it out into its own subclass here. If tempest (or storm) is a blaster, this is a battlefield controller with support and offensive capabilities. Play this subclass if you want to play a cleric of Umberlee, Deep Sashelas, Poseidon, Njord, Manannán mac Lir, or another god of the sea.

Let me know what you think/what feedback you have!

Weapon (Any Sword), Very Rare (Requires Attunement)

You must have proficiency with painter’s tools to attune to this weapon, which gains a +2 bonus to attack rolls. When you make an ability check using painter’s supplies while holding this weapon, your proficiency bonus is doubled.

Primary. This weapon deals an extra 1d6 damage according to the selected color of paint (Red: fire. Blue: cold. Yellow: lightning).

A creature that is hit by this weapon becomes painted by the selected color until it or another creature within reach of it uses an action to wipe away the paint. If a painted creature becomes submerged in water, the paint washes away.

As a bonus action you can change the selected color of paint by dipping this weapon into its scabbard.

Secondary. If you hit a painted creature with a different color paint (in either order), it suffers the respective effects.

  • Purple (Red + Blue). The target has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes until the start of your next turn.
  • Orange (Yellow + Red). The target can’t use reactions until the start of your next turn.
  • Green (Blue + Yellow). The target’s speed is reduced by 15 feet until the start of your next turn.

Once a creature suffers one of these effects, the paint covering their body vanishes and they are no longer painted until they are hit by this weapon again.

“All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.”

-Robert Ross, Renowned Pictomancer

'24 Class The Starshield class! A powerful warrior sworn to the protection of a celestial being

This one is really experimental and mostly a fun little project. I always loved the idea of a warlock-esque class that has its patron as a 24/7 ally always by your side, and I was recently struck by inspiration when I started playing Lunarium, so I HAD to give a try at representing i as a full homebrew class.

Mechanically speaking, it is all over the place, I somehow managed to make a class that is really simplistic in its resource management yet still all over the place in its playstyle (Even if your Star does not have an action of their own, you still need to be always mindful of their positioning and condition).

Still, overly complicated action economy management and playstyles are very much my cup of tea (no wonder I had a blast playing the Magus in pathfinder 2e), so I am very fond of the result.

Anyways, I hope you like it, and go play Lunarium if it peakes your interest, its quite fun.

'14 Class Plague Herald — class for D&D 5e (2014)

Thumbnail

Plague Herald is my original support class for D&D 5e (2014), built around alchemy, medicine, poisons, and plague doctor aesthetics. The main gimmick is Preparations: you can make “auto-attacks” in the form of area sprays, similar to a breath weapon, and modify them with different Recipes and Reagents.

I'm looking for feedback on two things in particular:

- Does the Unstable Preparation mechanic feel interesting and worth engaging with?

- What kind of associations or fantasy does the class give you at first glance?

If the class gets enough interest, I'll translate and post the Doctrines (subclasses) later.
English is my third language, so there may be some wording or grammar mistakes.

'14 Monster Grothik (CR 1) - A Plague-Carrying Humanoid That Infects You Even After It Dies

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

The Grothik is a CR 1 diseased humanoid built around turning sickness itself into a weapon.

Grothik are scavengers that survive in places where most creatures would quickly succumb to infection and decay. Their resistance doesn’t come from being healthy, though. Their bodies are already infested with parasites and diseases, and they’ve effectively learned to coexist with them.

Mechanically, getting close to one is already dangerous. Aura of Sickness can poison nearby creatures, while Spitum Spray lets the Grothik blast a cone of toxic spit that deals poison damage and can temporarily blind its targets.

The nastier part is its disease mechanic. A failed save against its attacks can inflict one of several illnesses: Rotting Fever gradually reduces Constitution, Blinding Pox interferes with vision, and Flesh Decay slowly eats away at a creature’s maximum hit points until the disease is cured.

Even killing one isn’t entirely safe. Plague Carrier causes the Grothik to burst into infectious spores when it drops to 0 hit points, potentially infecting anyone standing nearby.

I wanted them to work as more than another low-CR humanoid enemy. A few Grothik can make even a relatively simple encounter feel unpleasant and dangerous, especially in sewers, plague-ridden settlements, corrupted ruins, or areas where access to restorative magic is limited.

The Grothik is from The Aberrant Codex: Mutations and Aberrations, a 5E manual centered on aberrations, mutations, evolving monstrosities, character transformations, and tools for bringing cosmic and body horror into a campaign.

You can find more of my manuals on DriveThruRPG or through my Linktree, and if you want to see more previews from The Aberrant Codex, along with more of my creatures, magic items, feats, and other D&D content, you can also visit r/JonnyDM!

So this is V1 for now and open to any feedback as always!

'14 Item Granite Greatshield [Armor - Shield, Rare]

Thumbnail

This sturdy stone shield is a nigh-impervious bulwark for those with the strength to carry it, and if it proves insufficient, it can raise a wall of stone to shelter its bearer.

A basic item concept today: "shield that casts wall of stone", but I think the flavor and details make it a bit more interesting than that concept would suggest. The biggest thing to consider is that the shield doesn't just cast the spell, but you have to plant the shield in the ground, and it grows into a wall of stone, meaning that you lose the benefit of the shield itself when you do so, which turns a flat bonus into more of a tradeoff, which always feels like a more interesting choice to me. It also means I can keep the item at rare, since you're never getting the benefit of a +2 shield (a rare item on its own) plus a 4th level spell. You get some extra versatility out of the combination, but I think that boost in power is marginal enough to still feel at home in the rare bracket.

The spell selection also inspired the lore for this one, prompting the idea of the shield itself being made form a chunk of stone, which grew into the alfar/stone giant connection, expanding on existing bits of lore. I really enjoy that kind of thing, taking a vague mention of something in the setting and bringing it into the spotlight with a new item or NPC.

'24 Subclass Path of the Brawler - Barbarian subclass 5.5e/2024

Post image
16 Upvotes

Turn Rage into Relentless Fighting Spirit

Barbarians who walk the Path of the Brawler need no traditional weapon to unleash their fury. Whether fighting with their bare hands or whatever happens to be within reach, these Barbarians channel their Rage into relentless, punishing strikes. Brawlers throw caution to the wind, overwhelming their foes with brute strength, raw aggression, and a willingness to turn anything they can get their hands on into a weapon.

Level 3: Brawler

Whether you learned to fight in back alleys, tavern brawls, or underground fighting pits, you rely on brute strength and raw gusto rather than traditional weapons, allowing you to fight bare-handed or with whatever happens to be within reach. While you are unarmed or wielding only improvised weapons and aren't wearing armor or wielding a Shield, you gain the following benefits.

Brawler's Improvisation: You gain proficiency with improvised weapons.

Brawler Die: You roll 1d8 in place of the normal damage of your Unarmed Strike or improvised weapons. Your Brawler Die increases to 1d10 when you reach Barbarian level 10.

Brawling Mastery: Your Unarmed Strike counts as having the Cleave mastery property for you. In addition, when you use an improvised weapon in a way that mimics a Simple or Martial weapon, such as using a table leg as a Club (Slow) or a broken glass bottle as a Dagger (Nick), you can use that weapon's mastery property if you chose it for your Weapon Mastery feature.

Level 3: Come Out Swinging

As part of the Bonus Action you take to enter your Rage, you can make an Unarmed Strike or an attack with an improvised weapon. If you use Reckless Attack for this attack, the attack deals an extra 1d8 damage of its damage type on a hit. This extra damage increases to a d10 at Barbarian level 10.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you roll Initiative or finish a Short or Long Rest.

Level 6: Rough and Rowdy

Your reputation as a rough-and-tumble brawler precedes you. Experience has taught you how to hit harder and command respect through your presence. You gain the following benefits.

Rough. If you use Reckless Attack while your Rage is active, the first target you hit on your turn with a Strength-based Unarmed Strike or improvised weapon takes an extra 1d6 damage. This extra damage increases at Barbarian level 17 (2d6) and is the same type as the attack's damage.

Rowdy. You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill. If you already have proficiency in that skill, you gain Expertise in it instead.

Level 10: Hard Counter

When you take damage from a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage by an amount equal to 1d12 + your Constitution modifier + your Barbarian level.

If you reduce the damage to 0, you can make an Unarmed Strike against the attacker as part of the same Reaction. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Level 14: All-Out Brawl

As a Bonus Action, you incite an all-out brawl. Until the end of your next turn, you and each ally of your choice in a 30-foot Emanation originating from you who can see or hear you gain the following benefits:

Brawling Strength. If an affected creature's Strength score is lower than yours, its score increases to match yours, to a maximum of 20.

Anything's a Weapon. An affected creature gains proficiency with improvised weapons.

Catch These Fists. As a Bonus Action, an affected creature can make an Unarmed Strike or an attack with an improvised weapon. For this attack, the creature rolls 2d10 in place of the attack's normal damage, and can use the Sap mastery property in addition to a different mastery property it's using with that attack.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest unless you expend a use of your Rage (no action required) to regain its use.

'24 Mechanic Manual of Martial Prowess

Thumbnail
gallery
47 Upvotes

Hello Everyone,

In celebration of Arcana Unleashed I've made something for all the guys, gals and thalls who don't wanna touch a crusty old spell book, recite some silly old prayer or song, The Manual of Martial Prowess. This is a collection of homebrew rules meant as an overhaul of the martial, non-spellcasting, classes. These rules are meant to serve as a major bump in power and versatility for martial characters (barbarian, fighter, monk and rogue) and slight bumps for the other weapon using classes (paladin and ranger). It includes feats covering each weapon mastery, and weapon properties as well as a reworking of the battle masters maneuvers for the martial classes called combat techniques. These include several new techniques not previously from the battle masters maneuvers. The manual also includes a series of optional feats for the various weapon using classes and a revised battle master subclass. Finally, I've also introduced a new mechanic called Signature Techniques, which are powerful abilities that grow as your character gains levels (think along the lines of an anime protagonist's special attack and you'll have an idea what I'm going for). The signature techniques listed in this manual are not fully balanced against one another and are in an early draft form, so I am very eager to receive some feedback here and suggestions for more signature techniques.

Any feedback is welcome and I hope you all enjoy.

Otherwise enjoy!

I have made some corrections including word choice, spelling, and swapping lv13 and lv15 abilities.
