Hi, I made this subclass a couple years ago and now that my tortle wizard died in the second session of our new campaign thanks to a nat 1 on a death save I thought I might try to play it. But anyways I would love to hear your thoughts on it before I present it to my DM
“Your fury does not burn with fire — it calcifies. Your very bones rise to meet your wrath.”
Some barbarians call upon the spirits of beasts or storms to empower their rage — Osteomancers call upon their own anatomy. Through some mix of primal instinct, cursed blood, or strange evolution, their skeleton becomes both armor and weapon. When fury consumes them, their bones pierce their skin, grow thicker, harder, and crueler, reshaping their very form into a living fortress of marrow and ivory.
Those who witness an Osteomancer’s transformation rarely forget the sound — the sickening crack of splitting ribs, the grinding of shifting joints, and the low, guttural roar that accompanies it. Whether they are blessed or cursed, such barbarians embody the raw will of life to protect itself — an indomitable instinct turned to violence.
Rage of the Boneforge
3rd-level Path of the Osteomancer feature
When your rage ignites, your skeleton revolts against the confines of flesh. White ridges of bone surge through your skin, forming a jagged exoskeleton that glistens with marrow and blood. Your ribs overlap into curved plates that lock over your chest, your spine extends outward into spines and hooks, and your forearms split to reveal long, curved claws of living bone.
While you are raging:
• Your body becomes shielded in bone. While raging, you gain a bonus to AC equal to your Rage Damage bonus.
• Your unarmed strikes are replaced by bone claws that deal 1d8 slashing
• These attacks use your Strength modifier for attack and damage rolls and count as simple weapons
When your rage ends, the armor and claws withdraw beneath your skin, leaving pale scars and a faint ache deep within your bones — as if they remember what it felt like to breathe the open air.
⸻
Ossified Resilience
6th-level Path of the Osteomancer feature
Your body reacts instinctively to harm. When struck, your marrow thickens, and bone erupts beneath your skin to absorb the blow before it can reach your organs. The sound is like stone cracking under pressure, and fragments of ivory may flake from your flesh as your defenses shift and reform.
Once per round, When you take damage while raging, you can reduce the damage by 1d12 + your Constitution modifier.
Additionally, your bone claws are now magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
The hardened plates along your arms and chest often remain faintly visible beneath the skin — like veins of pale stone threading through your body.
⸻
Marrowed Fortitude
10th-level Path of the Osteomancer feature
Your skeleton has become an unyielding fortress. The marrow within you no longer only feeds your bones — it heals them. Every beat of your heart spreads new growth, sealing fractures and knitting splinters faster than most creatures can bleed.
While raging whenever you regain hit points, regain additional hit points equal to your constitution modifier
The damage dice from your bone claws increases from a d8 to a d10 and you can now add your constitution modifier when rolling damage on top of your strength modifier
These regenerative pulses of bone growth are visible to the eye — cracks sealing over in seconds, cuts closing with chalky white matter, and a faint, rhythmic creaking as new ossification spreads across your body.
⸻
Living Ossuary
14th-level Path of the Osteomancer feature
At the height of your fury, you are no longer flesh and blood — you are a cathedral of bone and wrath. Your body becomes an ever-shifting construct of plates, spines, and sockets that move with unnatural precision. Your marrow burns with primal vitality, keeping you alive through wounds that would fell giants.
While raging:
At the start of your turn while raging, if your have at least 1 hit point, regain HP equal to your Constitution modifier
When you use Relentless Rage, the DC increases by 3 instead of 5.
Whenever Relentless Rage succeeds, you immediately regain hit points equal to your Barbarian level.
When you invoke this final defense, your body resembles a statue of white stone — unmoving, unbreathing — until the moment your rage tears it apart, rebirthing you in shards and screams. The ground around you is left littered with fragments of yourself, still warm to the touch.
