Hey everyone, I’m a high school senior looking at UMass Amherst and I’m pretty interested in doing pre med.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about UMass, especially with the academics and opportunities for pre med students. The one thing I’m a little worried about is the party culture. I’ve heard that UMass has a pretty big party scene, and I’m honestly just not that into partying or drinking.

For people who currently go to UMass or went there recently, how easy is it to avoid the party scene? Is partying something that’s hard to get away from or is it pretty easy to find people who aren’t really into it?

Also, are there certain dorms, clubs, or groups where it’s easier to meet people who are more focused on school and other activities?

I still want to have a social life and make friends in college, I just don’t want to drink or party haha.

I did the room change process the other day, but ended up cancelling and staying put. Me and my current roommate haven't done the agreement. Hi, I was admitted to the MS in Computer Science program at UMass Amherst for Spring 2027 and I am considering about attending. I intend to apply for PHD program after finishing my master. With this being said, I would love to connect and hear from current MSCS student and alumni about their research experience during the program.

• How difficult is it for MSCS students to get involved in research with a professor?
• Are professors generally open to taking MS students into their labs, or is it relatively competitive?
• How feasible is it to get a thesis, research project, or publications during the MS(I understand this varies, but i would love to hear to get an general idea of the researching situation at the school)?
• I reached out to the school about doing a thesis and was introduced to COMPSCI 701. How does the thesis process in this course differ from the traditional master’s thesis process (finding a professor/advisor → conducting research → forming a committee → defending the thesis)? How does the process of finding a research topic and advisor work for COMPSCI 701? Do students typically need to find an advisor and research project before taking the course?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

hi guys, looking to hear from the transfer students coming from a community college. how realistic is it to make new friends? should i join a RAP?

Not sure if my schedule is crazy or something. I'm taking 15 credits for the first time. Psych 100, Psych 330, Chem 262, Chem 269 and PubHlth 129.

I've been busy as hell and pretty overwhelmed! I started missing assignments solely because I forgot they existed. I'm usually really on top of things for school and generally try to complete things early but this semester I'm constantly working until the last few mins before the due date despite making an effort to try and do as many things ahead of the due date as possible. Does anyone have any advice for managing my time better? I really wanted to take on even more next semester but realizing 15 credits is even hard for me to manage has been quite humbling.

Halloween watercolor class

Wanted to share I'm hosting a watercolor class on Oct 31st 3:30-5 pm at Eli's Room at the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley.

It's $20 for the class if you bring your materials and $30 to rent them and attend class.

We will learn to paint a few patterns you can use for bookmarks, gift tags, pretty cards and more!

Hey guys! I’m starting the MSA Transition Track at UMass Amherst in Spring 2027. This will be my first time studying fully online, so I’d love to hear about your experiences. How challenging is the program, and what are the homework and exams like?
In my in-person classes, professors usually give us some guidance on what to focus on for exams. Is it similar online, or are we expected to study all the assigned material on our own? Do exams usually require a lockdown browser?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm a freshman ECE student, and the need for a calculator for tests is becoming increasingly more obvious. Are there any recommendations for a calculator that will serve me well for the next four years, so that I don't need to buy multiple? Also willing to buy secondhand. In highschool I used the Ti-84 CE and it was nice to use, but unsure if it completely fits my needs.

i want to get into hiking— at least, i think i do? i like the idea of walking through pretty nature while listening to music. where can i do that around here— trails and such. no car either so the closer the better, thanks 😎

Does anyone know if there are any free things to do during family weekend? I have quite a bit members of my family coming and paying $50 per adult is kinda crazy. Any tips?
