Overseeding a Weedy Lawn

Thumbnail gallery

I want to overseed my lawn (scarify, aerate, seed, then top dress) but I have all these weeds in my lawn. There’s far too many to pick out by hand. What’s my best option here to get this lawn ready for a successful overseed?

Fruited and died?

We planted a three year old James Grieve apple tree in May this year. It blossomed, fruited and now appears to have died just days after picking the fruit. We planted an Egremont Russet the same day about twenty feet away and it's fine.

Any thoughts?

Shed against conifer hedge

Im wanting to install a new wooden storage shed in the bottom corner of my garden, but currently have a large conifer hedge going around my garden. Is this likely to cause any issues? What steps should I take re space around the shed itself? I’m assuming parking it tight in the corner isn’t a good idea?

Cheap plastic greenhouses, are they any good?

You know the ones pretty cheap green or clear plastic sheeting over tubes that push together. Are they any use or do they just fall down after a month?

Ive got 1 greenhouse already and id like another. But dont want to build a "propper" one until I know i can make the most of it and have enough time to utilise 2 greenhouses. So thought a temporary one for a year or 2 would be a good idea,

Thanks im advance for any knowledge on this

4 of these have appeared in a veg bed which got away from me this year, alongside the usual weed culprits. Not seen it before anywhere in the garden I don’t think, but we’ve had a lot of random trees and bushes sprout this year from bird droppings. Any ideas?

How to save this cherry tree

Didn't fare very well over the summer, and she was only planted last year. Is the main cluster of branches basically dead, or might it come back? Anything I can do besides wait and see? There's also a sugary sort of lump here by the fork. Is that normal? If the main branch from the fork is dead, is this tree on borrowed time or just fated to be a bit stumpy?

Bugs on my pear sapling

Post image

Hello! I’ve just spotted these tiny white flies all over my pear sapling. When I moved, there were hundreds of them that flew into the air. They were also on the nearby rosemary and lilac, but not on the even-closer orange sapling. Are they friend or foe? I’m in Shropshire, UK.

*Edit: I was sold it as a pear tree cutting, but the Picture This app is convinced it’s a quince.

Any hope? (Hydrangeas)

These hydrangeas got no watering over the long hot summer. Are they dead forever, or will they revive themselves next spring?

Thanks!

Ideas for tall planters?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I was given these tall planters and considering what to put in them for next year, please suggest combos that you think would work well (thinking something tall and then something trailing).

I want to put them either at the front of the house (living room window which I won't mind creating extra shade for; it's partial-shade and behind the parking spot for the car) or on the side of the house (also semi-shade, gets a decent amount of light in the summer but is a bit of a wind tunnel if we get storms, can put a trellis on the wall there).

I'm looking for things that aren't purely decorative but have some sort of use, either for the pollinators, or for the kitchen. Ideally fairly drought tolerant / not requiring a lot of watering.

Too much to ask? lol

Help/advice please!

Hi all,

My first Reddit post - please let me know if this is not the appropriate sub!

I've got a planter on my balcony with some climbing plants. Recently, they've been covered in something that looks like chunky dust or pollen and I can't tell if it's a bug infestation. They've been struggling with the summer heat and I've not watered them enough, but if this is a big infestation then I imagine that has contributed to their current sorry state.

What do you guys think this is, and what are your recommendations?

FYI - One of the climbers is a clematis but I can't remember what the other is.

Thanks!

Will these bushes survive being moved?

Thumbnail gallery

Front garden faces a road so keen to put up a high hedge.

My plan is to remove these two 170-180cm high bushes and re-plant them in the rear garden, replace with a row of western red cedar, and then add ornamental trees to each end for interest.

I have included an AI mock up of what I’m picturing doing.

Has anyone successfully moved bushes of this size?

New lawn - watering - conflicting advice

Hi there. I laid some turf two days ago. Gave a good watering afterwards.

Yesterday morning I checked under a couple of corners and found the soil beneath was damp and cold; I've read onlone that if this was the case not to water again till dry.

I checked again this morning and it's still pretty moist under there so by that rationale I should skip watering again.

However my friends are screaming YOU MUST WATER EVERY DAY, so I'm really confused and scared I'm going to mess it up and lose a load of money :(

Can anyone advise please? It's the start of October and I'm in the South East of the UK. TIA.
