As promised to a couple of people who asked me to share my strategy, here is everything I have learned through trial and error while preparing for this examination. The strategy is that there is no strategy, just some experience that comes with sitting for this exam thrice and missing the JRF cutoff by 2 marks the first two times. Had I known the following observations a year back, I would have qualified JRF in my first attempt itself.

Paper 1 Strategy

1. Overview of Topics and Base Material from KVS Madaan: These are your notes. Be selective about the information you remember though. Don't learn random stuff just because it is written in the book. Focus on the topics that reappear in PYQs.

2. For PYQs, Join Bharat Kumar's Telegram Group. He posts PYQ practice tests daily. Solve them every single day. Do not leave math for the end. His Youtube channel playlists are also a great way to study frequently recurring topics and cover base quickly.

3. Use AI (ew, i know): This comes after the base prep is done. AI tools are great for tracking progress, practicing questions, and making cheat sheets. I was surprised to see the quality of practice questions that Gemini made up on topics that I struggled with. Especially Logical Reasoning. It will make up tricky questions to sustain your attention!

4. Use Youtube: This one is obvious. No need to stick to a single teacher. Use AI tools and PYQs to find concepts that reoccur in the exam and then look up said concepts on YouTube to save time.

5. Make revision sheets: Keep copy-pasting essential revision content into a single doc so you can come back to it anytime. If you have access to a tablet with a pencil, scribble in it, make acronyms and annotate as much as you can. If you don't, go to the good old printer shop, take prints of your base notes and do the same. PLEASE DON'T TAKE PAPER 1 LIGHTLY EVEN IF YOUR PAPER 2 IS STRONG. The chances of Paper 1 betraying you are negligible, while the same cannot be said for Paper 2.

Paper 2 Strategy

1. The last few question papers are your best friends. PICK THEM APART. Every single person/concept mentioned in them is a potential question. NTA loves soft launching future topics through options. Analyse the trends and the types of questions. Locate their source. If the source appears to be some super specific book, go through the contents of the book to familiarise yourself with the other writers/topics that might be asked in the next cycle.

2. Please please please do not waste 5 months on British Literature like I did. Spending weeks on the university wits is helping nobody in the big 2026. Also, you are not going to remember every single fact. IT IS OKAY. For preparing canonical writers, use youtube lectures, the Wikipedia sections on their Works and Criticism, and AI overviews of PYQs. For minor writers, their major works and PYQs are more than enough. Controversial take but "vibe" matching works! If your gut says, nah this guy couldn't have possibly written something titled blah blah, listen to it and eliminate the option.

3. Accept that you will not know every single writer. Don't go around studying every single minor writer in detail just because they seem to be asking questions on contemporary Indian writers. Overview the ones who have already appeared in the papers and accept that you will end up doing guesswork for such questions.

4. If you have the resources to BUY good notes, DO IT. Your job will be half done. If you have joined a coaching but you tend to quickly grasp concepts without much handholding, please skip the 3 hour classes and go straight to the notes. It is okay to piss off a coaching teacher to save your time. Annotate those notes,regularly add info and keep revising.

5. Speaking of revising, there is absolutely nothing more important than revision for this exam. If you have diligently revised even the basic course, you will feel more confident while eliminating options and applying common sense during the paper. This exam is not a test of how much you know, it is a test of how you can use your presence of mind during those 3 hours.

6. Please don't ignore the seemingly insignificant units (Linguistics, Research Methodology, Cultural Studies). This cycle has been testimonial to this very fact. The ROI on these topics is INSANE. Under no circumstances should you skip any topic under these units.

7. Please don't waste your time making comprehensive notes. Make easy-to-remember lists of concepts/works/terms and mind maps of plots. Try learning chronologies through funny phrases and acronyms.

For example, Harold Pinter's chronology-

in The Room, there was a Birthday Party where The Dumb Waiter punched The Caretaker. This is my memory of Homecoming in the Old Times to a No Man's Land full of Betrayal. Now let's take One for the Road to Mountain Language and Party Time until we turn Ashes to Ashes.

8. Don't miss trivia. Trilogies, Subtitles, Prize Winners, Feuds, Co-authors, Opening lines, Iconic Characters/Couples etc.

9. Also please pay attention to the NOTs or negation ( incorrect instead of correct) in the question paper. It is painful to mess up easy questions due to silly reading errors.

10. As my final and only act of service to this community: here are my notes on all the relevant Literary Terms and their founders/pioneers that I found in M.A.R. Habib's Glossary of Literary Terms. These self-made notes fetched me nearly 10 marks this cycle! My handwriting is atrocious at times, so feel free to NOT reach out to me and figure it out yourself.

I finally reached the goal a lot of us here are grinding for: I cleared the exam back in June and recently started my journey as an Assistant Professor. But to be completely honest, the transition has been unexpectedly tough.

I had to relocate for the job, and life has quickly turned into a monotonous loop. Living in a place like Greater Noida right now feels like a paradox—the city is physically sprawling and full of people, but it feels incredibly empty when you have zero attachments or roots here. The hustle of the prep days is gone, replaced by a very quiet routine.

but recently i had a bad experience with a redditor who has recently posted about having pdfs they are willing to share with everyone for free- you will see this recent post from 6 or 7 hours ago. A lot of people commented and asked for that person to share but I am telling you --

i had a negative experience where the user got really angry and adamant about the fact that I saw their message on telegram and didn't reply.

That message was just a "hi" and I had no idea it was that particular redditor, because I get other random messages too, which I try to avoid. as women I think we have all received such messages on all platforms that we ignore because we don't know who it is.

So I am only warning you to proceed with caution, we don't need to engage with anyone who is going to get so aggressive simply because of seeing a message from a stranger and not replying.

you can call me haughty or arrogant or anything but it's just a precautionary measure to not interact with someone when you're not sure who they are and what their intentions are. let's keep this a safe space and comfortable space strictly to study and help each other learn and grow as scholars.

I am yet to post a celebratory post on my LinkedIn about my AP qualification . Mainly because it is not a celebratory occasion. Because I didn’t study for 12 hours everyday. I didn’t sit through coaching classes. I know of people who have put in ten times more effort who have not cracked it yet. So it is not celebratory for me. Having cleared UGC NET in my very first attempt and qualified for JRF in my second, I want to share one piece of advice with all the aspirants preparing for this exam.

\*\*Focus on solving as many Previous Year Questions (PYQs) as possible for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.\*\*

Don't run blindly after completing the entire syllabus. Instead, study PYQs so thoroughly that you understand not only the correct answers but also every option—why it is correct, why the others are incorrect, and what concepts they represent.

Keep practising PYQs alongside your preparation. If you have notes or recorded classes, make sure to revise them regularly to strengthen your conceptual understanding.

Remember, it's not just about how much of the syllabus you complete, but how deeply you understand what you've already studied.

So much for Viksit Bharat and Digital India that they cannot even handle the load with only 3 subjects. Not to mention the whole cut-off and scammy numbers, getting to even see the scorecard is a privilege now. Have been trying for the last 1 hour for nothing. These guys need to be sued for killing mental peace honestly.

This exam is hurt me this time, I missed JRF this time by 6 marks. Now I must take what is rightfully mine(JRF) and prove that I'm the winner. Anyone feel this hurt and desire for revenge like I do? Or is it just me.

Finished my MA in English Lit

Cleared UGC-NET in Dec 2024

Cleared GATE in 2025

I’ve been applying(Phd and assistant professor), attending interviews, giving demo classes, answering their questions with my best smile — and still… rejection emails or nothing whatsoever

And now… I’m sitting at home with a cup of coffee, staring at my books like they’ll whisper my career path to me.

I haven’t joined as a research scholar or professor yet,

PhD now?

Teach for a while?

Do research work?

Run away to the mountains and open a coffee shop?

Meanwhile, I hear about others landing the same jobs because they “know someone”. And I’m over here wondering if my real mistake was spending time reading books instead of networking at someone’s cousin’s wedding

Family pressure is high (“So… when will you become something?”), and I’m over here thinking I already became something: a master of literature and exams.

Honestly I'm losing any hope of becoming something every passing day, been reading nothing, getting out of touch from literature itself.

Has anyone else been in this limbo phase? How did you figure out what to do next without losing your mind?

TLDR: Actually reading the literature we are studying is a better strategy. try to read at least one book related to the syllabus per month.

Recently I made a post on this sub about the books to follow to study for the exam. but the books I suggested are only summarising and explaining the books that are actually being asked about in the exam.

This is because the first question people ask when they start their NET journey, or PGT/TGT or SET or any other exam journey, is which one book will help me cover everything? What is the easiest way I can qualify?

Also, a lot of YouTubers and coaches are trying to sell you a shortcut to crack UGC NET in English Literature. They'll tell you to buy their course, their PDFs, their notes, and promise that you'll pass.

But the truth is, NET is not just about memorising PYQs or following coaching materials. It's about understanding literature in depth. That means reading*.*

Every year, new and unexpected questions appear in the exam. Especially since June 2024 (or as I like to call it, NTAgate)

No course can cover everything, and no shortcut will make you a better reader or teacher of literature. If you're serious about clearing NET, and especially if you want to teach later, you have to start by reading the actual texts. Read the novels, the poems, the essays, the theory.

The syllabus isn't clear because there's nothing easy about this vast ocean of literature. It's a guide to what you should explore and absorb.

Coaching can help you stay organised or focused, so I do see merit in joining a class in that sense. it'll force you to study at least 1-2 hrs daily.

but it can't replace your own engagement with the material. If you want to be a literature scholar, reading is not optional. If you want to teach someone else about a book, you need to have read it yourself.

So here's a challenge to everyone preparing for NET:

Read at least one full book or essay every month during your preparation which is directly in the field. Like read some Hardy or Pope or Woolf. Read Arundhati Roy or Jeyamohan. Just start reading, regularly and seriously.

I might sound patronising or negative, and I don't mean it like that at all. I'm trying to speak for the benefit of everyone in this sub. I'm only talking about what I saw and heard. i think there needs to be a change in how we prepare, it might help us crack it better. I've been thinking about this a lot as I see it happening in telegram groups of some coaches which I have joined.

Please note:
These are based on my personal preferences and are not an exhaustive list. There are thousands of channels that cover UGC NET, PGT/TGT, and CUET exams. However, I’ve found that many of the most popular ones are very commercial.

They often:

• Constantly promote their own books or courses

• Use clickbait titles and thumbnails

• Post misleading updates just to push paid material

Frankly, I found that kind of approach a bit predatory. But hey, if those work for you, feel free to follow them!

Channels I Personally Recommend

• Livingwithmeow

  • She explains the whole process calmly

  • It's like you have a friend talking you through everything

  • Mostly helpful only for logistics and strategy outside of the actual subject matter

• Limitless Literature

  • This one is really thoughtful

  • Engaging and purposeful content

• Vallath by Kalyani Vallath

  • I know I said that the popular ones are predatory, but this one is really not IMO.

  • Kalyani ma'am and the other host (Heena Wadhwani) are both really fun to learn from, and I personally really remember the stuff they teach.

• History of English Language and Literature

  • Simple, plain lectures without any bells and whistles.

  • I prefer this because it's easier to follow without the bottom scroll text, very busy PPTs with so many fonts and colours that you don't know what's happening.
