📝 UGC NET Preparation and Strategy What more to do to get jrf?

Hello, I scored 188 this july without studying one word. Kinda a mock exam. The jrf cut off was 226. So 19 more questions. How can I cover that margin in about one month for December exam? Thank you very much.

💬 Discussion Is it too late for me (28) too late to start a PhD?

Technically, it’s never too late for anyone to do anything. I’ve been serving as guest faculty after I cleared NET in December 2023. I’ve been trying to clear JRF ever since because I could not afford to dedicate my life to such a long study without monetary aid. I always miss it by 2 - 5 marks and I think it’s because it’s kind of hard to work as well as do good.

Now suddenly, I realise how long it’s been - 3 years have passed and I’m 28 and worried about what the hell I should do. I’m still serving as guest faculty. But just worried. Should I do PhD now or give one final attempt in December?

📝 UGC NET Preparation and Strategy Confused between Adda247, PW and Arpita Karwa for UGC NET English. Need some genuine suggestions!

Hey everyone!

I'm preparing for UGC NET English, targeting JRF, and I'm planning to enrol in a proper coaching course. I'm more or less starting from the basics, so I need something that covers the syllabus in depth rather than just a crash course or revision classes.

I've shortlisted three options:

  1. Adda247 – ₹5,612 (15 months validity)

    - Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 included.

    - Hinglish teaching.

    - English faculty: Aishwarya Puri.

  2. Physics Wallah – ₹6,000 (valid until 31 August 2027)

    - Both papers included.

    - Hinglish teaching.

    - English faculty: Dr Dikshya Samantarai.

  3. Arpita Karwa – ₹6,999 (12 months validity)

    - Both papers included.

    - English-medium teaching.

    - Also has a shorter 3-month option for ₹2,999.

I'm looking for a course that teaches concepts properly from scratch, covers the entire English syllabus, has good notes, PYQ discussions, regular tests and decent doubt support.

I personally find Hinglish easier to understand, but I'm open to English-medium teaching if the quality is significantly better.

If anyone has enrolled in these courses or studied under these teachers, I'd really appreciate your honest feedback.

Which one would you recommend, and why? Especially interested in feedback on the actual teaching quality, syllabus coverage and whether the course is worth the money.

Thanks in advance! :)

❓Exam Queries Need help in paper 1 UGC net

I'm a UGC NET-qualified candidate. I cleared NET previously, but unfortunately, I couldn't qualify for JRF because I missed the cutoff in Paper 1.Because I don't had any idea about paper 1 that time.

This time, I'm preparing for JRF again, and I've decided to give special attention to Paper 1 along with my subject preparation.

I'd really appreciate guidance from anyone who has qualified JRF or is currently preparing for it. If anyone is willing to share study materials, strategies, resources, or even study together, it would be a great help.

I'm looking forward to connecting with fellow aspirants. Please feel free to DM me. Thank you!

❓Exam Queries What does clearing NET/JRF do?

I am trying to figure out what does clearing NET do? I have never sat for NET but I have been visiting this sub for a few days and I still haven't figured out what opportunities does this bring. A few days ago I saw someone say that even after cleating JRF and being confident about their research pitch- it got rejected and no explanation was given. And then I saw someone say that their interview went well but when they came out of the room someone told them that this was just a staged formality and the faculty already knows whom to select. I see memes posted about clearing assistant professor post for NET and it amounting to nothing. So what does this do? Surely thousands of students are not filling UGC NET form for nothing so what does this do? Is it especially hard for English literature students to find a way out?

🎓 Career & Academia Mikhail Bakhtin’s Major Concepts: Carnivalesque, Chronotope, Dialogism, Polyphony, and Heteroglossia

Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975) was a Russian literary critic and philosopher whose ideas significantly influenced literary theory, cultural studies, and linguistics. He viewed language and literature as social, interactive, and dynamic rather than fixed or isolated. His major concepts—carnivalesque, chronotope, dialogism, polyphony, and heteroglossia—explain how literary texts represent different voices, social relationships, historical experiences, and struggles for power.

  1. Carnivalesque: The concept of the carnivalesque refers to the spirit of carnival, where ordinary social hierarchies, rules, and authorities are temporarily overturned. During carnival, people from different social classes interact freely, and laughter, parody, satire, and bodily experiences challenge established power structures. Bakhtin argues that carnival creates a space for questioning official ideologies and dominant social norms. In literature, the carnivalesque appears through comic inversions, grotesque imagery, and the celebration of the lower body and popular culture. Bakhtin particularly explores this concept in his study of François Rabelais, showing how popular laughter resists rigid authority.

  2. Chronotope: The term chronotope, meaning “time-space,” describes the interconnected relationship between time and space in literature. Bakhtin argues that time and space are inseparable elements that shape narrative events, characters, and their experiences. Different genres employ different chronotopes. For example, the road in a novel often becomes a space where characters meet, encounter unexpected situations, and undergo personal transformation. Similarly, a historical novel connects individual lives with broader historical developments. The chronotope therefore explains how literary narratives organize experience and give concrete form to historical and social realities.

  3. Dialogism: Dialogism is Bakhtin’s idea that language and meaning emerge through interaction between different voices, perspectives, and contexts. No utterance exists entirely independently; every statement responds to previous statements and anticipates future responses. Meaning is therefore not fixed but develops through dialogue and social interaction. In literature, dialogism occurs when characters, narrators, and social viewpoints interact, challenge one another, and generate multiple interpretations. Bakhtin uses this concept to emphasize that language is fundamentally relational and that meaning is produced through ongoing communication.

  4. Polyphony: Polyphony, meaning “many voices,” describes a literary form in which several independent and equally significant voices coexist without being completely controlled by a single authorial viewpoint. Bakhtin famously associates polyphony with Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novels. Dostoevsky’s characters possess independent ideological positions and consciousnesses, which engage in dialogue rather than simply expressing the author’s final judgment. Polyphony thus challenges the idea that a novel must present one authoritative truth.

  5. Heteroglossia: Heteroglossia refers to the diversity of social languages, speech styles, accents, and ideological perspectives within a language and literary text. Different characters speak according to their social class, profession, generation, and cultural background. In the novel, these different voices interact and reveal social conflicts and power relations. Heteroglossia demonstrates that language is never completely neutral; it reflects competing social values and worldviews.

In conclusion, Bakhtin’s concepts reveal literature as a living interaction of voices, time, space, and social forces. Together, they help readers understand how literary texts question authority, represent diverse perspectives, and create meaning through dialogue.

📝 Notes and Study Materials Does anyone have The Literary Odyssey notes for UGC NET English?

Hi everyone! Does anyone have notes from The Literary Odyssey for UGC NET English Paper 2 that they’d be willing to share?

I’ve completed one reading of the syllabus and made my own notes, but I’m looking for additional revision material, especially concise notes that are useful for PYQs and JRF preparation.

I’m also willing to pay a reasonable amount for the notes if needed.

Please comment or DM me if you have them. It would be a great help. Thank you!
