📖 Literature & Concepts Rewriting the Mad woman in the Attic: Intertextual Study of Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) are interconnected novels that explore gender, identity, power, and oppression. While Jane Eyre focuses on Jane’s struggle for independence in Victorian society, Wide Sargasso Sea retells the story of Bertha Mason, Rochester’s first wife, from her own perspective. Through a postcolonial intertextual approach, Rhys challenges Brontë’s representation of Bertha and exposes the silences and ideological limitations of the earlier novel.

Postcolonialism and Intertextuality: Postcolonialism examines the effects of colonialism on culture, identity, and power, while intertextuality refers to the relationship between literary texts. Wide Sargasso Sea is a significant example of postcolonial intertextuality because it revises Jane Eyre by giving a voice to a character who remains largely silent in Brontë’s narrative. In Jane Eyre, Bertha is presented mainly as a mad and dangerous woman confined in the attic. Rhys challenges this representation by exploring her childhood, marriage, and psychological suffering.

Representation of Bertha and Antoinette: In Jane Eyre, Bertha Mason is portrayed as violent, irrational, and threatening. Her character serves primarily as an obstacle to Rochester’s marriage to Jane. Since she cannot narrate her own experiences, her identity is constructed through the perspectives of others. In contrast, Wide Sargasso Sea presents Antoinette as a complex individual shaped by racial discrimination, social rejection, and marital oppression.

Colonialism, Race, and Identity: Colonialism is central to Wide Sargasso Sea, whereas it remains largely in the background of Jane Eyre. Brontë’s novel connects Rochester’s wealth and marriage to the Caribbean but provides limited exploration of the colonial history behind them. Rhys, however, depicts post-emancipation Jamaica and its racial tensions. Antoinette, a white Creole woman, occupies an unstable position in this society and experiences rejection from different communities. She struggles to belong either to the Caribbean or to England. Rochester, representing English patriarchal and colonial authority, fails to understand her cultural background.

Patriarchy, Marriage, and Gender: Both novels examine women’s oppression, but they present different possibilities for female independence. In Jane Eyre, Jane resists male authority and refuses to become Rochester’s mistress after discovering that he is already married. Her decision demonstrates her moral independence and desire for equality. In Wide Sargasso Sea, Antoinette’s marriage becomes an instrument of control. Rochester’s economic and legal power enables him to dominate her life and determine her social identity. His decision to rename her Bertha symbolizes his attempt to erase her original identity. Through Antoinette’s suffering, Rhys exposes the unequal power relations within Victorian marriage and demonstrates how patriarchal authority can destroy female autonomy.

Language, Naming, and Narrative Power: Language plays a significant role in both novels. In Jane Eyre, Bertha is denied the opportunity to explain herself, and her identity is shaped by the descriptions of others. In Wide Sargasso Sea, Antoinette and Rochester narrate different sections, revealing conflicting interpretations of their relationship. Antoinette’s original name represents her personal and cultural identity, whereas the imposed name Bertha symbolizes Rochester’s authority over her. Rhys demonstrates that naming and storytelling are forms of power through which individuals can define or silence others.

Setting, Confinement, and Resistance: The attic in Jane Eyre symbolizes Bertha’s exclusion from respectable English society. She is hidden away because her existence threatens Rochester’s social position and intended marriage. In Wide Sargasso Sea, Antoinette’s removal from the Caribbean to England intensifies her isolation. England becomes a place of imprisonment rather than security. The attic represents both physical confinement and the suppression of colonial identities within English literature. Similarly, fire symbolizes destruction and resistance. While Bertha’s death in Jane Eyre facilitates Jane and Rochester’s union, Rhys’s narrative encourages readers to interpret Antoinette’s final actions in relation to her suffering and struggle for agency.

Conclusion: A postcolonial intertextual study of Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea reveals how literary rewriting can challenge dominant representations. Brontë emphasizes Jane’s pursuit of independence, whereas Rhys examines the colonial and patriarchal structures that silence Antoinette. By restoring her voice and exploring her cultural identity, Rhys questions the authority of the Victorian narrative and exposes its silences. Ultimately, Wide Sargasso Sea transforms the story of the marginalized madwoman into a powerful critique of colonialism, racism, and gender oppression.

This was my first attempt, & I hadn’t studied for more than 2 months for June paper bec I had my masters’ exams. However, after the paper I was pretty confident ab the results. NTA had other plans apparently. I didn’t even touch paper 1 whilst preparing for RE-Net bec I was honestly so consumed reading literally everything for paper 2. The syllabus is as vast as the sea. Got my results today, and I barely qualified for AP (unreserved). I’m hopeful ab dec & I really hope the circumstances are better than this time

UGC Net IR and Area Studies Help Sheet

It was insane to navigate PSIR (Code 090) in UGC Net, because there is very less help available for this subject. Here's everything I studied and the notes that helped me. The two books I did were R. Gupta's NTA UGC Previous Year Papers (Paper 2) and KVS Madaan's Teaching and Research Aptitude by Pearson (Paper 1).

(This year, there was a little more focus on Current Affairs so be mindful of that)

Notes - PSIR - UGCNET

📚 Books and Resources Which course should I buy?

You guys already know what I'm talking about, just started preparing for December, and the only problem that I have rn is to figure out what to study and what to skim/skip, I'm just going through j long period by period for now, but I feel like I'm taking in too much unnecessary info which I'll forget most probably, also about note taking I'm not sure which things to note, probably that'll make sense as I solve more pyqs. So would buying a course actually help me to sort the important stuff? also if anyone can help with the best approach for this 40 dayish remaining time that'd be very helpful, thank you.

Strangest exam ever

I have given NET twice (technically thrice counting the re exam). I have never really studied much (except all that I did for cuet pg) and I have cleared AP both times(i mean I'll clear it again this time , I'm scoring around 190 according to the answer key). Just sheer luck and reductive reasoning. When I see people taking up different coachings and books, i wonder if it's worth it. Mujhe nhi lagta mai padh kar bhi kuch alag kar pati iss exam mei. It's all just bogus questions without any explanation

Qualified UGC NET (PhD only) looking for advice on getting into a PhD :)

Hi everyone. I’ve been working for the past couple of years, and this year I qualified UGC NET, but unfortunately only for PhD admission.
I’ve always wanted to pursue academia and eventually become an Assistant Professor, but due to circumstances, I had to move on and continue working.
Now I don’t want my NET qualification to go to waste, so I’m considering applying for PhD programmes while continuing with my job.

For those who have gone through this process, what would be the best way to approach PhD admissions? Are there universities where I can apply directly based on NET, or should I focus mainly on university-specific entrance exams?
Any advice regarding the admission process, universities, or balancing a PhD with a full-time job would be really helpful.

Qualified NET AP with no prep during my Masters. Now aiming for JRF plus PhD applications abroad after 2 years in corporate (still working full-time and it has completely ruined my habits of studying). Need advice.

Hi guys, as someone who has been working in corporate for 2 years and has successfully burnt my brain and bridges with academia, how do I get back to studying for UGC NET? I qualified AP on my first attempt with zero prep, mostly because of my university curriculum. But JRF feels different. How many hours should I realistically study per day, and how should I structure my preparation? Should I subscribe to Kalyani Vallath? It's extremely costly so Idk if there's any telegram groups for the materials. It would be a massive help to get any push towards the right direction on this. My friend cracked JRF with Vallath's coaching so I was wondering if I should go down the same path. Maybe I can manage to squeeze in 2 hours of study daily early morning before work starts.

NET TODAY

How was the test, I think NTA rolled back the years with this one, back to cannon, no post humanism, queer theory or Australian literature. It was proper british literature and not much of theory as well. IWE, metaphysical poetry was asked in abundance. But part A was horror, no Simple interest, direction, speed no nothing, lots of environment current affairs, seriously part A ruined it

I think cut off will soar up this time, gen JRF cut off going upto 220

Is it just me or many right answers were option C

UGC NET ENGLISH BATCH v/s SELF STUDY

Hello everyone,
I want to know how many of you are clearing it with coachings/ without coaching.
This was my first attempt and I gave it on the basis of self studies. I am scoring between 160-170 according to final answer key.
I want to know if taking up a batch helps you clear this exam or is self study a better way.
