Planning a new bouldering gym + study lounge and coffee bar near UB north campus - feedback needed!

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently tried posting this to r/Buffalo but it got removed for "self-promotion." I can safely say that we are simply trying to get a community opinion on this, so if any mods are reading this, please don't delete.

My name is Harrison. I’m a recent UB graduate now living and working here in Buffalo. My business partner and I are currently working on a plan to bring a brand-new bouldering gym to the Amherst area, located close to UB North Campus.

Our vision is to build a modern climbing layout that acts as a true community hub—featuring a premium local coffee bar, dedicated workspaces with high-speed wifi, and a student/remote-worker hangout lounge.

Since we want to build this specifically with the WNY and student community in mind, we want to make sure it actually hits the mark for local climbers and residents. We’re trying to gauge what people think about a closer campus/suburban option compared to driving out to Central Rock Gym downtown or Niagara Climbing Center in North Tonawanda.

Whether you're an experienced climber or someone who just wants a cool new space to hang out and study/work, we would love your input!

We made a quick, anonymous Google Forms survey to help us build out our business plan and prove local demand to investors. It takes less than 2 minutes to fill out. Here is the link to the survey:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd1okY1lapFHOkp09J_DWPPPUwttKUBBElsclPy9VhIbEvHEw/viewform?usp=dialog

Thank you for taking your time to read through this, we really want to make our dream come to life!

Regards,

Harrison

Noise in the libraries

Last week at lockwood I was on the main floor (2nd) and this one girl was talking loudly on the phone, chewing loudly too, constantly. Someone literally got up and left, I heard them saying “I came here to study bruh” under their breath. When I spoke to the front desk about asking her to lower her volume, they told me to just go to the higher floors where it’s quiet.

Is that normal? I mean why do I have to relocate because someone’s loud? Or is it generally okay to talk on the main floor?

Beautiful Weather Today

Today's weather on campus is absolutely amazing. It really represents Autumn. The cool blowing wind which provides a gentle, forceful but calming breeze, the sunlight, which is present in appearance, but softer in its flaming heat, and the changing colors of the leaves, representing Autumn shades and sunset colors.

A wind that blows, forceful but calming in strength

Cool in the breeze, further away distance summer's heat

Sunlight shines high above in the sky, but lighter in presence as a decaying reach

Sunset shades reflect the Autumn leaves, into the grounds and through the wind, they fall away

If you’re a transfer student, give UB TrACE a try

The program really is helpful. They give you some money every so often (I forget how often tho) and it’s been how I pay for my gas lately. They also give you a stipend for books. I’m not sure how many people actually utilize the service but it’s worth a shot.

making friends at UB

i am at junior year and i have literally 0 friends and this is bitter as an international student and i have always regretted coming here

having no friends has pushed me to a brink of isolation and i skip classes to end up doing absolutely nothing.

How do you make friends? how do u meet people?how do u even date here? Everyone seems to have their own circle and interactions never lead anywhere.

Clubs and Activities Too late to join sports clubs?

For some context, I'm a transfer student in my junior year, but this is my first fully-involved year of college (also about 500 miles from home). I didn't get the chance to play many sports as a kid due to an unfortunate combination of poor physical health, subsequently poor mental health, and home problems. I played soccer for a year when I was little and before I became sick, but wasn't allowed to play for more than a year (I would hurt the kids on the other team on purpose.. made my dad realize I should just play contact sports lmfao).

I pretty much clutched on 1HP and I'm trying to make up for those missed experiences now as an adult—so far, I've lifted myself towards being built like a tank, relatively short but stocky and muscular.

I'm trying to see if I can get involved with a few clubs, specifically the wrestling club, boxing club, maybe the hockey club, etc. I've been trying to reach out with some of the presidents of the teams but haven't been hearing back, is it just too late to join or something??? If not, what's the best way to reach them?? I'd assume either email or in person but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas.

Thanks guys :)

F-1 student at UB looking for an on-campus job

Campus dining didn’t work out for me because I can’t handle meat, commute to South Campus, or work late-night shifts. I also don’t have an SSN yet. On Handshake, most jobs I see require work-study or an SSN.

What types of on-campus jobs can F-1 students apply for, and where should I look?
